The mystery of the Trinity is not a puzzle to be solved by human logic, but a reality to be worshipped. This is the God we serve. One God. Three Persons. Eternal. Inseparable. Glory be to Him.
Eternal Father; source of all, unbegotten, the One from whom every family in heaven and earth is named.
Eternal Word; the only begotten Son, through whom all things were made and in whom all things hold together; the radiance of the Father’s glory and the exact imprint of His nature.
Eternal Spirit; the Lord and Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and rests upon the Son, breathing new life into dry bones and sealing every son and daughter of God.
Inseparable.
Not three gods. Not one God wearing three masks.
Three distinct divine Persons, one divine Essence; perfect unity in eternal, holy love.
The early church didn't invent the doctrine; they articulated what they received from the apostles and Scripture.
Matthew 28:19
John 1, 14–17
2 Corinthians 13:14
They viewed the believers as the building blocks of the Church, "stones of a temple". prepared for God the Father, lifted by the cross of Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit as the rope (Ignatius of Antioch). They worshiped God "through Jesus Christ…with Him and the Holy Spirit."
They drew on Old Testament theophanies and dialogues:
Genesis 1:26
"Then God said, "Let Us make mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness..."
Psalm 2, 45, 110
"The kings of the earth take their stand
And the rulers conspire together
Against the Lord and against His Anointed..."
"Your throne, God, is forever and ever; The scepter of Your kingdom is a scepter of justice.
You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of joy above Your companions."
"The LORD says to my Lord:
'Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.'"
Tertullian explicitly cites these scripture against modalism (the idea that the trinity represents three distinct forms or modes). Likewise Irenaeus uses the Psalms to demonstrate the pre-existent Son. David, through the Spirit, hears the Father speaking to the Christ a thousand years before His incarnation. And Justin Martyr applies these to Christ’s pre-existence, eternal kingship, and lordship.
"From the womb, before the morning star, I have begotten you." Psalm 110:3
Not a creaturely origin in time.
"You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek" (verse 4)
Showing the Messiah as both King and Priest, roles only God can fully unite. The NT book Hebrews develops this at length, which the Fathers echoed in showing Christ’s unique mediatorial work within the Trinity.
Augustine views the entire Psalm 110 as a clear prophecy of Christ’s exaltation, victory over enemies, and priestly intercession. the Spirit Holy enables David to record the Father addressing the Son. The Father sends, the Son obeys and rules at His right hand, and the Spirit inspires prophecy.
Triune God revealed in His Word, not invented by councils.
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." (Matthew 28:19)
In the darkness of a maximum security prison, specifically where I minister, Sussex I or any prison really, this Trinitarian reality brings explosive hope. Men who feel abandoned, chained by past sins, or trapped in cycles of despair need to hear "you are not alone". The Eternal Father sees you and names your family. The Eternal Word; the exalted King-Priest of Psalm 110 and Hebrews, sits at the right hand, having defeated every enemy (sin, death, the accusers) and He intercedes for you right now. And The Eternal Spirit breathes new life into your dry bones, just as He did for Ezekiel, and for each of us in our conversion.
David overhearing heaven’s conversation, in a moment of worship, (likely tied to the new capital’s establishment, where throne and sanctuary unite), the same conversation that assures them their High Priest understands their weakness. David wasn’t in a position of perfect peace or luxury when he received this. He was a warrior-king with enemies all around, yet the Spirit let him overhear heaven’s assurance of ultimate victory.
The residents at Sussex 1 can relate. Locked up, facing "enemies" (addiction, regret, spiritual warfare, Muslims, pagans, atheists, fundamentalists), yet invited to trust the same exalted King-Priest who sits at the Father’s right hand. David, in Jerusalem, surrounded by threats, overhears the Father telling the Messiah to sit at His right hand until every enemy becomes a footstool. And they hear; "your High Priest understands your weakness, and He reigns until every chain is broken."
This mystery is not for scholars only, not exclusive to priestly councils; it is gospel fuel for the imprisoned and the free. For the men inside, no cell is beyond the reach of this inseparable Triune God. The God who meets them in lockdown. The One who was lifted on the cross lifts them now. It calls us and them into endurance (2 Timothy) and vigilance.
What this means for every believer is no matter the walls around you, the same Spirit can open your ears to this hope. The exalted King-Priest of Psalm 110 and Hebrews sits at the Father’s right hand, and He is interceding for you right now. Your High Priest understands your weakness and has already defeated every enemy.
We trust in the hope of the Trinity because this is the God we love and worship revealed to us in Scripture. Not a human invention, but the eternal reality the apostles and early Fathers defended from the Word.
We trust Him because only this Triune God can save. The Father plans our adoption and sends the Son. The Son obeys, dies, rises, and intercedes as our perfect High Priest. And The Spirit convicts, regenerates, seals, and empowers us to walk as new creations.
No single Divine Person acts alone.
Their works are inseparable.
United in Their distinct ways of Love. Together all Three invite us into the very life of God.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.
Amen. 🙏🏼
