Hebrews 3:1-6
"Therefore, holy brothers [and sisters], you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God's house. For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses; as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God's house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope."
"consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession"
Take a look.
Take a long careful look.
Contemplate Him deeply, and fix your attention on what He has done. In a world full of distractions, anxieties, and competing voices, the Holy Spirit is saying. Stop. Look at Jesus. Really look at Him.
"The apostle [one who is sent] and high priest [The one who represents us before God] of our confession"
He makes atonement for us, and intercedes for us. Unlike the Old Testament priests who had to offer sacrifices for their own sins first, Jesus is both the perfect Priest and the perfect Sacrifice. He is the Son OVER the house. The house is the place God has chosen to dwell. You and I; flawed, struggling, imperfect believers, are being built together into a dwelling place for God. The church is not a building with a steeple. We are the house of God who chosen the gather in a building we refer to as "the church", "the house of God".
But there’s a very important condition attached.
"if we hold fast."
This doesn’t mean we earn our place in God’s house by perfect performance. It means genuine faith perseveres. True believers continue trusting in Jesus [have faith] even when it’s hard, when it’s unpopular, or when they don’t feel like it.
Why is that the condition?
Because we are prone to drift. The human heart is like a boat with no anchor. If we are not intentionally holding it steady in the current of Christ, we slowly move away from Him without even realizing it. Consider the example of the Israelites in the wilderness. They saw God’s miracles, they were delivered from Egypt, they were part of God’s "house" in a sense; yet most of them drifted into unbelief and never entered God’s rest. Even Moses wasn't allowed to enter into the promised land.
Don’t drift. Don’t let your confidence slip. Keep boasting in the hope you have in Jesus. He is worth it.
Salvation is by grace through faith alone. You didn’t build the house. Jesus did. You didn’t deserve to be part of it. He brought you in. But true faith naturally perseveres. The evidence of that perseverance is the fruit of the Spirit. It’s the nature of a genuine saving faith to keep trusting, to keep hoping, and to keep boasting in Jesus. Even when feelings fade, even when life gets hard, even when culture pushes against you, or when sin tries to pull you back.
Jesus said it like this, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples" (John 8:31).
The "if" doesn’t cancel grace; it reveals whether the faith we claim is living or dead. You are already God’s dwelling place if you are in Christ. The Spirit of God lives in you individually and among us collectively.
Now fix your eyes on Jesus, your Apostle and High Priest, and hold fast.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, our Apostle and High Priest of our confession, we choose today to consider You. We fix our eyes on You. Anchor our drifting hearts. Strengthen us to hold fast. Complete our confidence to boast only in the hope we have in You. Thank You that we belong to Your house by Your grace. Amen.
