The Power of the Spoken Name
2 Timothy 4:5
"But as for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry."
This verse stands as a solemn charge from a dying apostle to his spiritual son. Paul writes from a Roman prison, sensing his execution is near. And he's not wrong.
Something terrible has been happening in the life of this apostle. The cultural and spiritual climate is turning hostile; people will no longer endure sound teaching but will gather teachers to suit their own passions and desires. It looks so familiar to me. The way the minds of the people work in that day, chasing after spirituality day after day, putting on the identity of a Christian, but somehow they can't abide Christ's righteousness.
Paul's not describing a minor drift; he’s describing a full-scale rejection of the gospel’s core demands. People in Timothy’s day (and ours now) want the name of Christianity, and the comfort of spirituality, the community, the identity…but not the cross that crucifies the flesh.
Look at the immediate context...
"For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths." (2 Timothy 4:3-4)
Then comes the pivot..."But as for you…" (v. 5)
This is the same spirit we see today; large crowds chasing "Christian" experiences, influencers, movements, and emotional highs while rejecting biblical repentance, holiness, and submission to Christ’s lordship.
They want resurrection without crucifixion.
Grace without transformation.
A Savior who saves them in their sin, not from it.
Professing faith, yet living like the world.
No fruit, "my truth", dressed up in Christian language.
They are offended by the very Scriptures that expose their sin and call them for righteousness.
Paul saw this coming way back then in the first century. And today we’re living in the acceleration of it.
So it seems, that in more than two thousand years, the church (empowered by The Holy Spirit), hasn't yet managed to cure this human condition. It's still with us. It's still possessing us. It's still prowling around looking to see who it can devour. And frankly, it's not going hungry, not starving for willing prey. It's got plenty to eat from.
And you understand don't you, that this is exactly what's going on?
Humanity is a feeding ground for demons.
I'm not being dramatic or overly pessimistic; I'm being biblical. The apostle Paul saw that same devouring spirit at work in the first century, and it has never left. It only changes its clothing. The reason the visible church has not "cured" this in 2,000 years is simple; we cannot cure what only the Holy Spirit can kill. The flesh, the world, and the devil are a three-fold enemy that no amount of programs, movements, or emotional experiences can overcome.
Only the cross does that.
Notice...Paul doesn’t tell Timothy to fix the culture or reform the crowds who have turned aside to myths and legends. He instead tells him to stay sober, endure, evangelize, and finish the race. These are all "but as for you" attitudes that Paul is instructing his young student to adopt in his own life. Live by these things. You...live up to these things. Because the battle is not ultimately against flesh and blood.
People who want the benefits of Christianity without the blood-bought cost of dying to self. They wear the label, sing the songs, they post the verses, they chase after the experiences…but their hearts remain uncrucified.
And demons feast on uncrucified flesh.
This is why Jesus said (Matthew 7:22-23):
"Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord…’" (Matthew 7:22-23)
Humanity is a feeding ground; but only for those who refuse the narrow way. The true remnant, the born-again, the ones being conformed to Christ’s righteousness, are not easy prey. These demons cannot escape when a believer speaks Christ's name to them. They cannot kill Christ's children without first being invited in, and encouraged by the willful lies, and false promises of another gospel.
I'll share a real-time experience that highlights this battle, and how easily the gospel of Christ's love defeats the demonic influence.
I've just returned home from a 3 1/2 day Kairos prison ministry weekend. During that weekend, we ministered to 44 men, it was only ever supposed to be 42, but the Lord had something else in mind. Many wonderful God moments took place throughout that time too many to list here today, maybe I'll share them later. But one in particular, I found interesting and this happened yesterday the last day of the event. One of the things we ask the participants to do for us and for themselves, is too make a list of their impressions, the things they've received from this weekend event and write them all down so that one from their group, their particular family table group, one who can read for all of them to at the mic. And so my particular group did as we asked, and they selected one from among them to be their representative. But while we were preparing for this, a couple of them took me aside and expressed concern about the one that was selected to speak for them. And I asked them why. And the concern was that this one who was going to speak about what they experienced over the weekend was currently identifying as a Muslim. This is the condition in which he came to this weekend event. And he even spoke about this to us. Telling us that he is excited and happy to be there, in his words, to be visiting the family of Isaac.
Now everyone at the table may not have understood what he was saying, but I did. And that's OK and that's just fine for now, because there's still time to dig deep into his feelings about Isaac and Ishmael. We can talk about that sometime in the future, but that's not the focus of this weekend. Right away, right now it's about common ground.
QThis Kairos weekend is intended to share the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ, even to a Muslim, and that's exactly what took place. And so I shared with my concerned disciples that it's both ironic and encouraging that their Muslim brother (for today) is going to share, for the larger group, the impressions of those he now calls his family.
I think it's beautiful, and it's holy, because it's exactly what the spirit of evangelism is all about. We weren't asking him to go up and speak the truth of the gospel. He was just sharing what they have all learned over the weekend. What could be better than for him to speak those words out loud?
Speaking those words into the faces of the demons that he had been associating with, the demons he's been identifying with, the demons he's been living with. What could be better than for him to speak the name of Christ over and over again.
Oh no, my friends, I'm glad that he was selected to speak about their impressions about Jesus Christ, and the Lord is as well. Because I know that when he spoke those words, he disintegrated those demons. He may not have known it at the time, although I suspect he does, but the demons know it, and that brings me joy.
Friends, demons cannot stand when the name of Jesus is spoken in faith, even by someone who doesn’t yet fully understand what they’re saying. The Word of God does not return void (Isaiah 55:11). When that man stood up and declared the good things he received; forgiveness, family, hope, the love of Christ, those were not neutral words. They were light piercing darkness. Every time the name of Jesus came out of his mouth, it was a hammer blow to the demonic strongholds he had been living under. He may not know it now, but he will soon, that he is in for a radical change. God set him up, God showed up just at the right time, spoke to his heart, softened it, and put His words into his mouth.
Even if he was only "visiting the family of Isaac" for now, he was still speaking life over Abraham and Isaac’s true Heir...Jesus. (I'm laughing at God's cleverness)
This is why the enemy hates simple, sincere evangelism. It’s not always a polished sermon. Sometimes it’s a man with a different background standing up in front of other broken men and saying, "This is what I received this weekend…" and the name of Christ keeps coming up.
And praise God for that.!
Amen? Amen.
Keep standing brothers and sisters. Keep speaking. The demons are not winning this one.
God bless you all, now and forever.
