From Spiritual Coma to Sovereign Wind
1 Thessalonians 5:6-8
"So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet."
Some live in spiritual ignorance, moral carelessness, and unpreparedness. Living as if they have no concern about themselves or others. It's a complacent and false security that isn't secure at all. They're dead already. Those who belong to the "night" and "darkness" live in a kind of living death. They do not know, or refuse to acknowledge the reality of God. They hold onto their superstitions and religious beliefs in order hold off a God they never knew.
It's like a profound spiritual coma. It's a dulled conscience that treats sin lightly and eternity as distant or irrelevant. Not a mere lack of information, but a willful refusal to acknowledge the reality of who He is as revealed in Scripture and in Christ.
This is one of the great tragedies of the human condition. Instead of running to the living God who offers forgiveness and new life, people construct layers of ritual, tradition, superstition, or self-made spirituality that serve as a buffer. It's all illusions of spiritual activity or protection; crossing fingers, relying on lucky charms, repeating empty religious formulas, or trusting in a vague "higher power" or family tradition. It's life in the shadows. No substance just the semblance.
As Jesus put it, they honor Him with their lips (or with their objects and routines), but their hearts are far from Him.
"They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules." Matthew 15:8-9
The danger is subtle and widespread. Even sincere religious activity can become a sophisticated form of idolatry when it replaces genuine faith in Christ. They've built these spiritual safeguards, that they suppose provides spiritual safety without requiring repentance, surrender, or a personal encounter with the God. And if you had a conversation with them about their relationship with God, you'll soon learn that it's simply a religious experience that isn't born again. And in fact, many would rebuke the idea of being "born again" because of the historical context surrounding that term. And so, these terms and conditions confuse them. They are spiritually ambiguous to them because these things are spiritually discerned. And that natural spirit cannot understand the things of The Spirit.
Why do you suppose that is?
Why has God created this distinction between spiritual discernment and natural discernment?
The Bible takes us all the way back to the beginning to diagnose the problem. "The Fall" of mankind has blinded and deadened the natural mind. Sin didn’t just affect our behavior; it corrupted our entire faculty of spiritual perception. Mankind isn't simple ignorant of God, or indifferent, he is actively hostile in his understanding. Spiritual truths appear as foolishness because the natural mind lacks the activated organ needed to receive them. They have not activated their faith, but instead have substituted it with their natural instincts. Just as a radio without a receiver can’t pick up the broadcast no matter how loud the signal is, these are those who have not been born into listening.
So how does one flip the switch into being born from above?
The question is the problem. Being "born again" (or "born from above" ) is not a religious upgrade or emotional experience that can be manufactured by the person interested in receiving it. It is a supernatural act of God in which the Holy Spirit wakes a dead spirit, implants new life, and then gives the capacity to understand and love the things of God. And I mean truly loves the things of God, above all else.
Jesus describes it like this:
"The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." (John 3:3, 6-8)
It's mysterious and sovereign. And it is initiated by the gospel. Hearing the gospel opens up the possibility. Receiving that word, believing in his name, and repenting of our sin, isn't the means, it's the response that the Lord sees for which he gives them the right to be called "children of God" (John 1:12-13).
It is not "I decide and then God regenerates me." Rather, the Spirit’s regenerating work makes genuine repentance and faith possible, and the moment faith lays hold of Christ, the new life is imparted. We cannot see the exact moment the wind begins to blow, but we see its effects.
How does wind get started?
From what I recall it's the sun's energy that acts upon the earth; its atmosphere, its land formations and oceans, and differences in air pressure. It's the uneven absorption of the sun's energy that creates this effect. Dark forested regions absorb the energy differently than the lighter colored regions, and the water absorbs differently than land. And out of this difference in reception comes a change in the winds. The air is conditioned by its nature, its reception is directly connected to its natural environment.
How does wind get started?
From what I recall it's the sun's energy that acts upon the earth; its atmosphere, its land formations and oceans, and differences in air pressure. In short, the sun is the ultimate power source. Without its uneven heating, there would be no significant wind on Earth. The atmosphere is constantly trying to equalize these differences, and that endless attempt produces the winds we feel. Darker regions absorb the sunlight differently from the lighter regions, and water absorbs differently than landscapes. Nature tries to balance the air and its that balancing that creates a rush of wind.
Just as wind doesn’t "start" because we decide to make it blow or follow a human formula, it originates from the sovereign, unseen work of the sun’s energy far beyond our control, so too the new birth is initiated by the sovereign work of the Holy Spirit. We cannot command the wind to begin any more than we can command the Spirit to regenerate a dead heart. The "energy" comes from outside us; the Father, through the Son, by the power of the Spirit.
We hear the Word, the Spirit may sovereignly begin to warm and stir what was cold and still in us. Conviction begins to arise, and when faith and repentance respond, we see the effects.
So, why don't some see the effects?
The Bible tells us that these are those who lack any real awareness of their spiritual poverty, the depth of their sin, or the coming judgment. They feel no genuine hunger for the gospel because they don’t see themselves as spiritually bankrupt. Though they may take the time to participate in religious transactions, it's an exercise in futility because they haven't come to the gospel humbly, with any sense of guilt. This is why many religious people, like Nicodemus, can be moral, knowledgeable, and active in faith practices yet still need to be told, "You must be born again." Their external religion acts as a buffer, masking the need for a heart-level regeneration.
The comfort in all of this is profound. The same sovereign God who withholds the wind in some cases delights to send mighty gusts in others. No heart is too cold, too religious, or too hostile for Him to awaken. And so, we plead with God to send His Spirit, to open blind eyes, and to grant repentance and faith with prayerful dependence rather than despair or presumption.
May the Lord see your heart, hear your prayers and send His Spirit to warm your soul. May He stir you up, and gift you with His blessings of faith and hope. And may you know Him now and forever in eternity.
Amen.
