Luke 11:29-30
As the crowds were increasing, he (Jesus) began saying, “This generation is an evil generation. It demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation."
Jesus told them they were deaf and could not hear the truth. They were confronted with Jesus Christ, wiser than all the wisdom of Solomon. And they were confronted with who Jesus is and who they thought he should be. Jesus asked them who they say he is. In the 70's the broadway play asked, "Jesus Christ, Superstar, do you think you're what they say you are?"
Jesus claimed to be preexisting. He claimed that before Abraham was, he was. He claimed to be the Son of the living God. Begotten, not made. And he, "the sign", the logos, has been given from before the beginning of time. As Jesus put it, "something greater than Jonah is here."
Jonah was a prophet, something greater than Jonah is here.
Jonah was stubborn, disobedient, cantankerous, judgmental; something greater than Jonah is here.
When God called Jonah to preach repentance to his enemies he rebelled and ran away from his calling, something greater than Jonah is here.
Jonah preached repentance to his enemies and later he became a curmudgeon, he damned his enemies in his heart and he became cold and heartless, and begrudged his God's grace and mercy, something greater than Jonah is here.
Jonah bitterly complained because God didn't come down hard on his enemies in the way he thought he should, something greater than Jonah is here.
In this way Jesus nailed it. He nailed the hearts and minds of most people. He nailed their nature. Pinned it right down in perfect order. Called them out for who most are. Like the Apostle Paul after being struck down and blind by God's presence, the people say, "who are you Lord." They demand a sign but won't receive him unless he pulls off some great supernatural force upon them. But would they like it if he said, "okay, you're blind now" ZAP! "There ya go". Now follow me.
Jesus asks for a sign from them, a sign of faith. He asks, "when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:8b). Jesus answers the question in the broadway play Jesus Christ Superstar, "do you think you're what they say you are?" with a question, "who do you say that I am?"
Jesus answers his own question with, “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35, 41, 48, 51).
He said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12; 9:5).
He even drew a mental picture for them when he said, “I am the door” (John 10:7 and 9)
Jesus explained his great love and faithfulness when he said, “I am the good shepherd” (John 10:11, 14).
And Jesus redirected the misguided predisposition of his followers who sought a new conquering king to smite their occupiers when he said of himself, “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25).
Jesus challenged the prevailing wisdom of the age by saying, “I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6).
And Jesus explains how important it is for his people to remain in him when he said, “I am the true vine” (John 15:1, 5).
Jesus spent a lot of his time just explaining himself to boneheaded hardhearted people. And that hasn't changed for millennia.
Ultimately Jesus claimed the most critical claim of them all, he told the lawyers and spiritual leaders that he, this man standing before them, he said to the Sanhedrin, “I am.” Applying God’s covenant name to Himself.
That wasn't the end of the story. It was the end in Jesus Christ Superstar. In that play they left Jesus in the grave and facing an accuser Judas in hell. A Judas like everyone that Jesus was speaking to when he said they are a corrupt generation and will receive the sign of Jonah. But that story was destined to play out over and over again, even unto this age. All of this was a sign. All of it. The entire gospel is the sign. It's a blessing and a sign. And throughout the ages it has answered over and over that same question who is Jesus for hardheaded people. The first martyr Steven answered the question before the Sanhedrin and The Holy Spirit spoke the sign through him. And the resisted the Spirit, even though it cut them through the heart. They clung instead to their own understanding and they took Steven's life in the name of their faith.
This scenario has played out a million times over since that first faithful Christian spoke the gospel and paid for it with his life. Today we not only have the gospel, we also have two thousand years of examples of faithful people answering the question of Jesus through the sharing of the gospel. And there's no shortage of hardhearted, hardheaded people demanding a sign.
And Jesus' answer remains the same...the sign of Jonah is given to them. The sign of Jonah wasn’t just about his resurrection, Jesus knew that the gospel would lead to repentance, multitudes of people that the Sanhedrin would have hated. Gentile nations that had worshipped pagan idols for millennia miraculously repented, turned away from the many gods, and began to worship the One God of the Jews in the person of Jesus Christ. That is the sign of Jonah. They asked for it and continue to demand it today, and the truth is the same. The sign of Jonah has been fulfilled. We don’t simply believe because a book says it’s true, we can just open up our eyes and see the world around us, we can see the gospel working.
The atheist world loves their memes about logical fallacies, and they imagine themselves to be creatures of wisdom and reason. But like the generation of the age that Jesus spoke to in Luke 11, they miss the miracle right in front of their faces.
Did Jonah travel in a fish? Could he? How could he? Blah blah blah. They miss the supernatural point. If Jonah indeed died inside the fish, he indeed rose again three days later and preached the good news to the Ninevites. Science tells us what nature does when left to itself; miracles happen because nature is not left to itself. God makes the gospel know, even now. He did it then and he does it now. No amount of atheist rationalism has defeated the supernatural truth. And the science of that enduring evidence of the gospel power is the sign of Jonah. The science of the evidence is voluminous, over the past two millennia, billions and billions of non-Jews have repented and worshiped the God of Israel. Christianity and the worship of the One God has spread via the gospel sign throughout the entire world. Because of a tiny band of Jewish vagabond fisherman, and their gospel message, empowered by The Holy Spirit, millions have heard and believed. They received the sign of the logos and believed.
And those are they who Jesus said,
John 20:29b
"Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.”
