Layers of Divine Light: Unveiling the Crystalline Realms of Scripture
Genesis 1:6-8
And God said, "Let there be an expanse [canopy] in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters." And God made [fashioned] the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. And God called the expanse Heaven [sky]. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.
The spiritual realms are like a symphony of layered light where God’s sovereignty orchestrates every refraction and pathway. It's not a static vault but a dynamic crystalline expanse, a threshold shimmering with divine order, separating yet connecting the seen and unseen. God created the "firmament" (raqia in Hebrew, often translated as expanse or vault) to separate waters above from below, forming a structural boundary between earthly and heavenly realms. And the scriptures give us illuminations from time to time about what those heavenly realms are like.
Ezekiel 1:22
Over the heads of the living creatures there was the likeness of an expanse, shining like awe-inspiring crystal, spread out above their heads.
Ezekiel expands on this vision, likening the firmament over the living creatures (angelic beings) to "the likeness of the terrible crystal, stretched out over their heads." This crystal-like dome isn’t just a barrier but a shimmering, structural layer, possibly a dimensional threshold where light refracts and higher beings manifest (ascend and descend). Some interpretations see it as a solid, crystalline construct holding back cosmic waters (a heavenly ocean), creating layered realms: earth below, firmament as intermediary, and higher heavens above.
I imagine layers upon layers of inter-dimensional crystalline tiers. With avenues of light highways in which these "angelic" inter-dimensional beings travel through time and space. The apostle Paul mentions being caught up to the "third heaven" (2 Corinthians 12:2), implying a hierarchical structure of heavens, possibly layers escalating in purity and light. In Revelation 4:6, before God’s throne is "a sea of glass, like crystal," a vast, transparent layer reflecting divine light, where angels worship incessantly. This crystalline sea suggests a structural platform in higher dimensions, bathed in God’s glory as unapproachable light, (1 Timothy 6:16). This crystalline motif culminates so vividly in the New Jerusalem, a metropolis of pure, jewel-encrusted light.
The New Jerusalem
Revelation 21:10-11,18-21
"...And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God...having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal...The wall was built of jasper, while the city was pure gold, like clear glass. The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel. The first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass...And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it"
This evokes a multidimensional metropolis built from light-refracting crystals, where "the city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it" (Revelation 21:23). It’s a structural pinnacle of dimensions, layered in radiant strata, symbolizing ultimate union with the divine.
We humans, though made in the image of God, are bound by our flesh, and can only perceive shadows or glimpses of this glory, (visions, dreams, revelation, as in 1 Corinthians 13:12: "For now we see in a mirror, dimly." For us, these spiritual things are often mingled with confusion as our mortal minds struggle to navigate the interplay of light and encroaching darkness. But sometimes the Spirit escorts us beyond these quantum veils or scalar resonances, whatever you want to call them, informing our thoughts with revelations that transcend our fleshly bounds.
Ephesians 3:16-19
"That according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."
That inner-being, the inner-man (or woman), is our connective spirit illuminated by the indwelling Holy Spirit. I believe, as far as the flesh is concerned, the pineal gland (the so-called third eye) is the house for this connection. And the blood is our light transport system. This is why the scriptures talk about the heart being a critical physical realm for spiritual activity. So, I believe God created us to be connected to Him and his Heavenly realms. And the catalyst for that is prayer.
The spiritual realm is a higher dimension proximate to ours, where angels step through crystalline-like veils of light, [doorways, quantum networks, harmonic lattices, scalar waves, whatever] without distance constraints. These structures resonate with scalar light and are formed into orthogonal projections by the power and design of God. In essence, these layers of light, structural and potentially crystalline, form a divine architecture where spiritual beings operate, while as for us, our fleshly human limitations veil its full comprehension.
It's amazing, beautiful, and profound to think about these things. And to know that one day we will experience these layers of light for ourselves. For now we can only visit these realms in our dreams. And our thoughts will for the most part be confused and confounded in the blend of darkness and light while we're there.
John 1:5
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome
God invites us and grants to us glimpses of His glory through faith and in His Word. While our fleshly limits do veil full comprehension, His Spirit can take us into the spiritual realms and inform our thoughts.
Romans 8:26
"Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words."
Warning:
Demons may lurk in the dark distorted lower tiers, perverting clarity into deception, but the overarching architecture remains unassailable, a testament to God’s unovercomable (I know that's not even a word) light.
While its fun and interesting to think about these things, the Bible portrays these supernatural entities as part of the unseen world (Ephesians 6:12, Colossians 1:16), and it doesn’t encourage direct communication or meditation focused on them. Instead, it directs us to seek God first, with the Holy Spirit as our guide. Unlike Buddhism and other pagan religions, meditation in Christianity is less about emptying the mind or channeling our energies, and more about filling it with God’s truth (Joshua 1:8, Psalm 1:2). This doesn't mean you can't reflect on these things. Maybe you could imagine the firmament as a shimmering threshold accessing the divine wisdom during quiet prayer, praising God for His creation of both the visible and invisible realms. This builds awe without seeking direct encounters with possible spiritual enemies. Simply put, avoid the occult by avoiding their methods. Don't invite trouble in an effort to reach the divine. And don't mimic or borrow pagan practices attempting to cleanse them with holy thoughts and prayers, or the name of God. God won't be mocked, and if he wanted you to play around with these things, His Son would have told you to do it.
I believe that true spiritual insight comes from Scripture-saturated prayer. Scripture shows angels as messengers responding to God’s will (Hebrews 1:14), not ours. Best to leave them to their business. Communicate indirectly by praying to God for angelic protection or guidance, as in Psalm 91:11 ("He will command his angels concerning you" ). As for demons, Ephesians 6:10-18 instructs us to put on our spiritual armor through prayer, and walking in the light, resisting evil via the Holy Spirit’s power, not dialogue with demons and adopting pagan schemes. Attempting direct contact risks deception, as Satan masquerades as light (2 Corinthians 11:14). Always test the spirits (words, deeds, manifestations, signs and wonders) against God’s Word.
The Spirit helps us in our weakness, granting glimpses of glory amid our fleshly limits. Meditate by asking for wisdom to comprehend spiritual depths, as in James 1:5. A.W. Tozer in "The Pursuit of God", (a book I highly recommend), describes this as contemplative prayer, yielding to the Spirit for revelation, not summoning beings. I like to imagine the tree of life and the river of life. I enjoy envisioning his luminous crystalline kingdom while praying. Almost as if my thoughts can transcend all the inter-dimensional veils and make a direct connection to the source. And I believe we have that connection available through the power of the Holy Spirit and the name above all names, Jesus Christ.
Sing hymns or pray through a psalm. Exalt God’s throne room, invite the Spirit to illuminate interdimensional truths about God's kingdom without seeking created supernatural spiritual entities to intercede for you. They're not doing it for your benefit, they want you to look towards them rather than towards the Holy One of God, our Lord and God, Jesus Christ. Avoid forbidden practices: Deuteronomy 18:10-12 prohibits divination or spirit consultation; stick to prayer in Jesus’ name.
Ultimately, our union with Christ seats us in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6), transcending dimensions through faith. One day, we’ll fully experience this glory, but for now, let devotion deepen dependence on God, who bridges all realms.
1 John 3:2
Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, Creator of the seen and unseen, thank You for the glimpses of Your glorious firmament and heavenly architecture in Your Word. As we meditate on these layered realms of light, grant us discernment through Your Spirit to perceive Your truth amid the shadows, protect us from deception, and draw us closer to the unapproachable light of Christ. Fill us with Your love that surpasses knowledge, that we may walk in Your radiant presence.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
