Ten Questions Jesus Is Asking Christians - Week 9
Week 9 - Ten Questions Jesus Is Asking Christians - There Will Be Betrayal
Read Luke 22:48
Jesus said, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?”
So, the question for you is, would you betray Jesus with a kiss?
At an hour when darkness (Satan) reigns and Satan was in them, Judas and the mob approaches Jesus and his disciples; and Judas betrays God’s Son, he betrays the promised Messiah. And he does so with a gesture of love and affection. Judas, like so many, was not only betraying Jesus, but he was also betraying his own true motives. He was in it for himself in this situation. He didn’t protect his Lord; he gave him up for a price. He didn’t serve Jesus’ best interests, he served himself. This kiss wasn’t a form of worship, or a gesture of love and adoration, it was a signal to the evildoers. Judas had allowed the darkness to creep inside him and become his guide. He had become the Devil’s disciple in that moment. And many even now are likewise breaking communion with Jesus and betraying Him in their deeds; thereby following (possibly unwittingly) the dark lord of this age.
HOW DO PEOPLE BETRAY THE LORD?
We look at Judas and want to hold him in contempt. We think to ourselves, what a fool he must’ve been. Nothing would have caused us to be so grievously sinful against our Lord Jesus. Yet the fact of the matter is we all tend to build our own little kingdoms and invite Jesus to join our courts and serve our interests. Even for those serving in ministry, there is a temptation to compromise a little here and there to please people or to please ourselves. We build kingdoms of morality, ideology, doctrine, and idolatry. We try and purchase forgiveness of sin with our own virtue-signaling thoughts, words, and actions.
CAUTION
We need to beware trying to bribe God, trying to buy Him off so that we can get from Him what we want. It’s one thing to be mindful of righteousness, and quite another to be focused upon the appearance of righteousness. We have been given a great responsibility: the care of the church. This especially applies to leaders in the church. Are we guilty of dressing up the church in a way to attract more members? Imagine if a man asks his friend to protect his new bride while he is away on a business trip. The man’s friend takes great care to protect her while he is gone. This friend even goes so far to ensure that the community finds her to be beautiful, attractive, and feels favorably about her when they attend her many community and cultural events. And as time goes on the new bride becomes somewhat old hat for the community, so to maintain her prestige and popularity the man’s friend has her dress up in revealing clothes and dances her around the village squares to attract the local men to her. He even has her do favors for some men who want to invest in her husbands’ businesses. And for a time, this seems to work out well, but then the people and investors grow bored with her. Until inevitably she is seen as little more than a trained dog. And many no longer fall for her charms.
When the man returns, will he be thankful for the state of his wife’s affairs? Will he appreciate the things his friend has done? Will Christ thank us for this when He returns, or will He be angry that the church is dressed like a harlot?
Focus scriptures for the faithful in these last days:
The commandments are summarized as “walking as Christ walked” (1 John 2:6)
Revelation 12:17
And the dragon (Satan) was angry at the woman (The Bride of Jesus, The Church) and declared war against the rest of her children—ALL WHO KEEP GOD'S COMMANDMENTS AND MAINTAIN THEIR TESTIMONY FOR JESUS
And so it goes, the people of God are expected to keep the commandments of God that were written by God's hand into stone. Not speaking about the ordinances of man written on paper and kept outside the ark of the covenant, but the ten commandments of God given to Moses. And likewise, the followers of Christ are expected to keep faith with their testimonies for Jesus.
Without a doubt, the times of the end will be times of scandal and offense. Traps and sin will be set up for them as a snare, and they will need to maintain this faithfulness to find their way safely. There will be betrayal everywhere. And the wise will keep their testimonies as a hedge against the false teachings.
"This means that God’s holy people must endure persecution patiently, obeying his commands and maintaining their faith in Jesus." Revelation 14:12
It's all about finding our way. It's about "The Way" we choose to go. It's about who we follow and who we choose to accompany us in our way. It’s about who and what we worship.
1 John 2:11 "...whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes."
Our Response: What’s a body to do?
Love your enemies, pray for those who spite you and persecute you. The commandments are embodied in love for the brothers, and in love for our enemies.
Friends, in these dark and frightening days ahead, remember that darkness is passing, and the true light is already here showing us the way we should go. The Lord is near and goes before us. His Spirit lives with us and will advocate on our behalf before the Father in heaven. We are never alone. We are never alone. We are never alone.
Amen and amen.
