The Kingdom’s Breakthrough and the Already / Not Yet Hope
Ephesians 2:4-6
"But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our wrongdoings, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus"
We partake of Christ now by faith and the Spirit. And are already the full, unmediated participants of banquet with the risen Christ in the new creation which awaits His return. Through the Holy Spirit, believers are united to the risen Christ, nourished by Him, and seated with Him in the heavenly places. The Lord’s Supper, therefore, is a foretaste and participation in Christ’s presence. Positionally, we are already raised and seated with Christ because the veil has been torn; and now we have bold access to the Father through the Son. The marriage supper of the Lamb is anticipated now in our worship, and in the Lord’s Table, as well as in our fellowship in the universal (catholic) Church.
All these material devices are shadows of both what's to come and what is already happening and has happened.
We walk now by faith, not yet by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). We see in a mirror dimly (1 Corinthians 13:12). Yet the preview that is "church" is real and guarantees the reality. The kingdom has broken in (already).
"The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel." Mark 1:15
The kingdom is not distant or merely future; it has drawn near in the person and ministry of Jesus. He is the King, and where the King is present, the kingdom is present. This is why Jesus could say the kingdom "has come upon you" when He cast out demons (Matthew 12:28) and why "some standing here" would see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom (Matthew 16:28 "already" fulfilled in part at the Transfiguration with the Shekinah cloud and the Father’s voice).
"Repent and believe in the gospel" is the proper response to this breaking-forth (Perez) reality.
The Hebrew name Perez means to "breach," "burst forth," or "breakthrough." It comes from the dramatic birth story of the son of Judah and Tamar in Genesis 38:29, where the twin unexpectedly pushed ahead, breaking through the expected order. Just as Perez breached the birth order by sovereign surprise, the King has burst into history, overturning the old order and bringing the kingdom of God near. The ultimate divine breakthrough has occurred in the person and work of Christ.
The ongoing call to repent and believe keeps us living in the breakthrough tension until the full consummation at His triumphant return. And so, we are called to enter into His rest, into the one holy body of Christ across time, places, and traditions. Wherever Jesus Christ's Spirit is, there is the catholic Church.
The God of Perez continues to break through!
In the work of an evangelist. In the fulfillment of ministry. In the service to God's word and grace. This kingdom came, awaiting the crown of righteousness, and is here now to serve, not served or reserved.
Mark 10:45
"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many."
Serving in service to Him in "the least of these."
This present service in the breakthrough is the very evidence of living in the kingdom now. Feeding the hungry, welcoming the stranger, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and imprisoned. Not simply focused upon consumption for our own nourishment, but consuming mercy and grace in service to the Lord’s kingdom. Emphasis on receiving (partaking by faith) and giving (service to the least of these).
When we serve the hungry, thirsty, stranger, naked, sick, or imprisoned, especially fellow believers ("my brothers" ), we are serving Christ Himself. We are partaking in Him. Consuming His life by grace as we extend it to others.
Bearing fruit of the Spirit is the fulfillment and visible expression of truly consuming Christ. The branches do not merely receive symbolic or occasional nourishment; they are continually sustained by the living sap of the Vine. His divine life flowing moment by moment from the root.
Jesus says, "I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing" (John 15:5).
The branch draws nutrients, water, and life directly from the Vine at all times. It is a direct link to the divine, not a one-time event. The fruit of the Spirit is the proof that the divine life is flowing in you. There is no distance, no interruption, no separation from His power. This fruit is cultivated in the vineyard work of daily life; especially in serving "the least of these", when we consume mercy and grace in order to extend Christ’s life to others.
And because we are eternally blessed by His ongoing work in us, no demonic force can enter or destroy our souls.
The same life that flows from the Vine guards and keeps us secure until the full harvest. We cannot add to His power, we only receive it as a conduit of His mercy and grace.
"for apart from me you can do nothing" - Jesus
Therefore we abide in Him, we consume His mercy and grace. Abiding in His Word. Abiding in His ministry. Abiding in His Faith.
Jesus repeats 10+ times throughout the passage in John 15:4-10, "abide".
Remain.
Continue.
Dwell.
Endure.
Not a temporary visit, but settling in. Intimate, ongoing fellowship, and communion.
"He who abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit" (John 15:5)
Not by means of food that perishes in the stomach and is expelled through the bowels, but by bearing spiritual food, the food that endures to eternal life.
What we receive by faith, nourishes that fruit. Abiding in that faith sustains the harvest. Faith is the hand that receives the Vine’s life, and abiding keeps the nourishment flowing so fruit and harvest abound.
Receiving → abiding → fruit-bearing → security.
Active, grace filled dependence and assurance; cultivated in the vineyard work of daily life.
One day the Vinedresser will bring in the full harvest. The shadows will give way to sight. The foretaste at the Lord’s Table will become the eternal marriage supper of the Lamb. Until that day, we abide, we bear fruit, and we serve with joyful endurance; secure in the unbreakable life of the Vine.
Repent and believe. Abide in Him. The King has come near; and He is coming again in glory. Fulfill your ministry, for the God of Perez continues to break through!
Amen! 🙏🏼
