Living Water for a Thirsty Soul: How Jesus Awakens Our Spirit to Eternal Truth
John 4:11
The woman said to him, "Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water?"
Jesus, in talking about thirst, was speaking about spiritual water, spiritual healing and spiritual sustenance. I think everyone understands the aspect of metaphor involved in this conversation. I think even this Samaritan woman knew this. But this is even more far reaching than that. Jesus is getting at the realities about the human condition and our human existence.
Humans are a threefold creation. Mind, body, and spirit. In verse 13, Jesus says, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again,” referring to the physical water from the well. This statement is a profound commentary on the fleeting nature of physical experiences and material satisfactions. No matter how much we drink, eat, achieve, or possess in the physical realm, the satisfaction is temporary, and the longing returns. There are always going to be unsatisfied people.
"if I just had __________________, then I'd be happy."
Jesus contrasts this with the "living water" He offers (John 4:14), which satisfies the soul eternally. The mind and body may find temporary relief in worldly things, but only the spirit, when connected to God through Christ, finds lasting fulfillment.
The fact of the human matter is, every physical experience, whether pleasure, success, or even basic needs like drinking water, ultimately leaves us wanting more unless we address the deeper spiritual thirsts.
Spiritual thirst is the soul’s deep desire for purpose, peace, and communion with God, even when you don't realize it. Unknown to your mind, masked by the weaknesses of your body. Only the spirit can make sense of the Spiritual Waters. Spiritual thirst operates as a soul-level longing.
The mind is different. It is often unaware of the spiritual thirst. The mind often misinterprets it as a need for more knowledge, more control over the narrative, and more intellectual achievements. More more more. It's governed by that same desire that governs the body. So, Jesus engages the woman’s mind through dialogue in the context of her lifestyle, but He points beyond the intellectual understanding and moves her into spiritual truth.
This is how he took her from a discussion about her many husbands and ends up with her saying...
John 4:19
The woman said to him, "Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet."
And now he's got her where he always wanted her. He's got her seeking spiritual food.
John 4:21-23
Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him."
Jesus awakens her spirit, leading her to perceive Him as a prophet and ultimately pointing her toward worshiping God "in spirit and truth".
It took truth to accomplish this goal. Not tolerance, not signs and wonders. It was truth that created this kind of revelation. Jesus talked about her five husbands and current partner (John 4:18) which all represented her attempts to fill her own spiritual thirst with human relationships. Jesus gently exposes this to awaken her to her deeper need, not to condemn her but to offer her healing. This journey reflects how Jesus meets us in our brokenness, engages our minds, and leads our spirits to the living water that satisfies forever.
The woman’s recognition of Jesus as a prophet and her openness to His teaching on worship show her spiritual awakening. She's realizing now that the body’s weaknesses are a mask people put on to substitute for that spiritual thirst. And it's a poor substitute.
Now, it's very important to notice that this whole situation is being handled by God. He's the one seeking. He's seeking worshippers. And he seeks out this women in particular. And I think she realizes this and it blows her mind. But that's the thing see, it's about her mind, not just her body and spirit. Jesus is drawing her into this communion with God that she’s been longing for, even unknowingly, but truthfully he wants everyone to know him. He's not seeking robotic unknowing worshippers. He wants his people to know him.
"true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth"
That "in truth" part means he wants you to know him. To truly know him. This Samaritan woman's spiritual awakening involves recognizing that her body’s demands (water, human connection) have masked her deeper thirst for purpose, peace, and communion with God. Now a new day is dawning for her. Sparked by Jesus’ truth-telling and divine insight, her focus shifts from temporary fixes to eternal fulfillment.
Have you ever felt that shift?
Have you ever gone from what seems like a coincidental change to realizing that something profound and eternal has taken hold of you?
The woman, an outcast due to her ethnicity, gender, and lifestyle, likely never imagined God seeking her. Yet Jesus initiates the conversation, he reveals His knowledge of her life, and offers her living water. She progresses from calling Him "sir" to "prophet" to sharing Him as the possible Messiah. This suggests she’s beginning to grasp the astonishing truth: God has been seeking her out the whole time.
This holistic engagement ensures she’s not a "robotic, unknowing worshiper," but one who knows God authentically, with her mind enlightened, and her spirit enlivened, her body is now following reoriented toward eternal purposes. It's a full conversion and it's actively engaged in God's work.
This is the thing that so many religious people miss. God actively wants people who know him and worship him in spirit and truth. Not in religion. Not founded in temples and churches. Not chained to asceticism and rote prayers and isolated idols.
Hosea 6:6 - God desires
"steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings."
And he's trying to covenant with people in this regard.
Jeremiah 31:34 - In the new covenant,
"they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest."
And Jesus is there at the well, in her moment, in her life, in her business, to bring her home to God.
John 17:3 - Jesus defines eternal life as,
"that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent."
The woman’s journey from the spiritual ignorance of Jesus’ identity to proclaiming Him to her townspeople as the Messiah (John 4:29), reflects this growing knowledge.
The woman’s story is a microcosm of God’s desire for all people. And her experience is an example for us all. Her experience teaches us to reflect on how God has sought us out, perhaps in unexpected moments or through personal encounters with His truth. Her story helps us to reflect on how our body’s weaknesses (e.g., chasing physical comfort, relationships, or distractions) have masked our spiritual thirsts. And her encounter with Jesus teaches us to engage our minds in worshipping in spirit and truth. Knowing the truth about who Jesus is.
Do you know who Jesus is?
She realized he is the Messiah, and he told her as much. But do you KNOW who Jesus is?
Let me encourage you to know him. One of the best places in the Bible to learn about Jesus' identity is found in Paul's letter to the Colossians 1:15-20,
"He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross."
That's it. The full truth. The whole truth and nothing but the truth.
So, ask yourself, "How is Jesus inviting my mind to know Him, not just my spirit to feel Him?"
Like the Samaritan woman, share how Jesus has met you. This could be a conversation with a friend, a testimony in your faith community, or a kind act that reflects God’s pursuit of others.
Again, ask yourself, "Who can I invite to ‘come and see’ Jesus?"
1 Peter 2:21
"For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps."
Go, and believe in him.
Go, and live in him.
Go, and be available for his purposes.
Share in his pursuit, follow in his steps. Emphasize the mind’s role in knowing Him, the spirit’s awakening to His truth, and the practical call to live for His purposes. Be an holistic Christian. Echo Jesus' desire for true worshippers who engage their whole being; mind, body, and spirit, in communion with Him.
Now go in peace today and every day. God bless you.
