Mark 12:22-24
While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take it; this is my body." Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many," he said to them
(The Word of The Lord)
It's Thursday night, the night of the Passover celebration. Marked from sunrise to sunrise by the Galilean Jews of that region, unlike the Judean Jews in the south who celebrated from sunset to sunset.
And this celebration marks the beginning of the New Testament covenant. The Old Testament covenant is now overturned by this new day. Jesus defines the end of the old age and renews the tradition in himself. The blood of the lamb that saved his ancestors is now his blood. And the promise of The Holy Spirit is the seal of that new beginning.
This is a very heavy thing in our Christian faith. It is certainly monumental. If anything is sacramental it would be this. It is a very simple ceremony but in it is our whole devotion. It marks a change in the covenant between God and his creation, and a change in the people of God.
The systems of sacrifice is now ended. God ends them. He offers up his perfect Son as the final sacrifice, this one time. Now and forever the Lord is His sacrifice for all.
The Plan
Mark 12:13-15
So, he sent two of his disciples, telling them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there."
Why all the secrecy? Why send the two disciples only? Because Judas was already preparing to betray him, that's why. And the time of his arrest was not to be in this upper room during this new covenant ceremony. Judas was not in on these preparations for good reason. The place would have been perfect for the authorities to catch them all together and off guard and in private out of sight of any people who might interfere.
The components
The final Passover is finished. All that should occur has occurred uninterrupted by Judas and the Jews. They've finished the full meal. They are now reclining after the meal. Then the old transitions into the new. They are not at their ready with their loins girded as was the original pattern for that ceremony. They are at their leisure now. And they get to talking.
Luke 22:24
"A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest."
So, here we are again, pride enters into the conversations of his disciples. And Jesus takes this opportunity to teach them about the cost of discipleship.
Who is the greatest?
Luke 22:26-27
"Let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves."
Jesus assigns a kingdom to them, a kingdom in which they must serve. Which is the greatest them? Each will sit on thrones in the kingdom. Each will sit in judgment. But they must come to their thrones as slaves. He illustrates this in the Passover meal by washing their feet. And by the eating of the bitter herbs.
Jesus truly wanted this to happen in the way that it did.
Luke 22:15
And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer."
These things had to come to pass. It all must go down in the way that it did. They all knew these things. All their lives they celebrated these meals. It was who they are. And so this new celebration of his final sacrifice was critical to their faith and whole identity as the people of God. And he says as much in his final word on the ceremony...
Mark 14:25
"Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God."
It's done. The new covenant has come and the old is finished. The Lord is no longer in the Passover meal, not until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God. When he returns he will celebrate the Passover meal again with his kingdom people. Then there will be a great supper – the marriage supper of the Lamb which is mentioned in Revelation 19. This is the fulfillment in our Father’s kingdom that Jesus longed for.
This is the good news. The gospel. He's going to his death. He's going to rise from death. And he's coming in glory to establish his kingdom. That is the gospel.
But for now, one will betray him. Another will deny knowing him. And he prays that they do not lose faith completely. Judas, he knows is lost forever, but Peter he prays will turn from his weak heart and strengthen his brothers.
At these words they were extremely upset. They argued among themselves about who among them could be guilty of such things. The judge had testified against them. Their guilt is made plan for every one of them to see.
Mark 14:27
"You will all fall away," Jesus told them.
There was not a single thing any of them could have done to change this reality. It was God's plan. Peter didn't cause it. Judas and the Jewish temple priests didn't cause it. Pilate and the Romans didn't cause it. All these things are the fulfillment of God's will as reveal in the prophets.
It is written...
Zechariah 13:7
"Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, against the man who stands next to me," declares the Lord of hosts.
"Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; I will turn my hand against the little ones."
There wasn't a thing they could do to stop it. Even Satan couldn't delete or improve upon it.
God uses all these corrupted human beings to accomplish his plan. God predetermines their actions. Judas and all the rest act on their accord, according to their own greed and selfishness, by their own free will by their own means, but God designed it.
And God talks about that human responsibility and God's responsibility.
Mark 14:21
"The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born."
And so there it is. The Lord has spoken. So let it be written, so let it be done. The fate of mankind is written. God's sovereign will is written. Nothing can get inbetween God and his divine order.
God's divine will all ends with the greatest single observance, The Lord’s supper. It is completely finished now.
He blessed the whole event. The bread, the drink, the whole meal is blessed by Jesus. He gives thanks. It's called the Eucharist because that's what it means when we say, Eucharist, it means to give thanks. He breaks the bread so they can share it together. And the new thing that happens is he says take this for this is my body which is given for you, "do this in remembrance of me". That explains what this Lord's Supper is about.
The Apostle Paul got it...
1 Corinthians 11:24
And when he had given thanks [Eucharist], he broke it, and said, "This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me."
What is the point?
A reminder of the gift of forgiveness of sin in the body of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is why it's extremely important that we do not partake in this ceremony if we are not taking it with a sincere understanding and humble reverence for the sacrifice that Jesus offers in his body. This is serious stuff, not superstitious rituals. It's not magic. It's a remembrance of his sacrifice. He gave it for us. He blessed it for us. The "it" is bread, the point is remembrance. It is bread and wine given in remembrance of him.
You don't need to eat Jesus' blood or flesh like some kind of cannibal. It is in remembrance that we take the cup of blessing. It is in remembrance that we eat the bread given by him for the forgiveness of sin. Just as the Passover meal was given in remembrance in the old covenant.
God made a lot of covenants in the Bible. This is the final covenant. A new heart, and a new spirit is given here. It's ratified here by Jesus. Later it will be sealed by the Holy Spirit after Jesus ascends into Heaven. The sacrifice is fully satisfied here. And Jesus will not partake of it again until he takes it with us in his kingdom. There is no multiplication of this moment, Jesus said he is not going to partake again until he comes again in his kingdom.
He did this for the forgiveness of sin.
The gentiles are now grafted in. The apostate Jews are cut off. The old has passed away and the new has come.
And they finished the meal with a song.
Psalm 136
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of gods, for his steadfast love endures forever...
Read the whole thing, sing it out loud...and notice 26 times the statement is sung:
"For his steadfast love endures forever"
Amen and amen.
