The Messiah is just a stone's throw away
John 8:42-47
Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, because I came from God and I am here. For I didn’t come on my own, but he sent me. Why don’t you understand what I say? Because you cannot listen to my word. You are of your father the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies. Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. Who among you can convict me of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? The one who is from God listens to God’s words. This is why you don’t listen, because you are not from God.”
Let's have church so we can continue to go over stuff we already know. Let's not change our thinking or habits. Let's not dig deeper or allow what we dig up to change us. Let's just do our religion and call it a Sunday.
Friends,
If you don't understand the truth of the word of God, how are you going to understand the lies of the enemy of your soul? If your mind isn't being reborn, if your spirit isn't being sanctified, what is this all about?
Take a look at this encounter here in John chapter eight. These Pharisees and "The Jews" (the teachers and preachers, priests and lawyers) are deducing that Jesus is a Samaritan and he has a demon inside him that's causing him to say that he has the power and authority to forgive sins and resurrect the dead. And if you keep on reading this conversation keeps getting more and more stupid. Every time Jesus asserts his authority and talks about his relationship with The Father, they nitpick his words. At one point they say to him, “You aren’t fifty years old yet, and you’ve seen Abraham?”
This is just stupid. They're arguing about stupid things.
Have you ever had a conversation like this, probably surrounding politics or religion, and the people you're talking to are being obtuse?
Now this entire chapter is an obtuse attempt, on the part of The Jews, at discrediting the words of Jesus. Jesus is clearly claiming equality with The Father. It began with an encounter with a condemned sinful woman who The Jews brought before Jesus to trap him into a situation where he would teach a false prophetic message which they then could use against him in a court of law. Instead of that happening they go away in silence because of something Jesus wrote in the dust of the ground with his finger. We don't know what he wrote, but we can see in real-time the power of his written word over wicked men. Jesus forgives the women, but he did bid her to cease her sinning.
Shortly after this we see a continuation of one of Jesus' great "IAM" sayings.
John 6:35
“I am the bread of life,” Jesus told them. “No one who comes to me will ever be hungry, and no..."
John 8:12
Jesus spoke to them again: “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk..."
In the Jewish law and regulatory framework, it was unacceptable for the state to accept the testimony of individuals about themselves. They required two or more witnesses to support any claim. And so, they challenged Jesus and his claims of divine nature on these grounds.
Jesus faces this challenge by testifying for himself and offering the testimony of The Father who sent him. And of course, these men demand that Jesus produce his Father to witness for him. Jesus' adversaries judged things by appearances, and they couldn't see past this son of a carpenter from Galilee. And it's ironic because if Jesus wanted, he could produce Abraham, Moses, Elijah...and so on. Right there before them he could transfigure himself and them.
But this encounter isn't about proving his divine power, this is about their inability to produce faith. The faith that they should have been willing to give. The faith that they could not give, because God is not their Father. This encounter is being played out by Jesus to expose their perverse hearts and minds as they request from Jesus that he produce his father, and it exposes their ignorance and lack of faith. It's intended to remove from them any excuse when they are facing the Day of Judgment. They test Jesus' testimony; Jesus tests their faith. They slander Jesus' words; Jesus words stand as a testament to their lack of faith.
And this is again ironic, because Abraham was justified by faith. Moses was justified by faith. Elijah, Noah, Jonah, Job and so on, all are justified by faith. Not according to any lawyer's presentation or a judge's proclamation.
Jesus' authority is heavenly, based upon faith. The Jewish authorities are earthly and sinful, and their only hope of escape would be through faith, believing Jesus and his words. He's right there standing before them. This is their judgement day, not his. With these words, "I AM" Jesus identified himself unequivocally with God, and backs it up when he is resurrected from the dead. From the death he predicted before them.
John 3:14
“Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up..."
At this point things get hot. People are very angry, and The Jews try to destroy him, they try to stone him right then and there, and Jesus slips away. And the word tells us that many heard his words and believed.
And that brings us to real lesson to be learned here.
John 8:31-32
Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you continue in my word, you really are my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
"If you continue"
Many there believed but not long after they tried to stone him. Who exactly tried to kill him it's not clear. Probably many believed and didn't take part in the violence. Keep in mind this is something akin to a mass debate in which Jesus is speaking to a very large crowd, and some among them are not friendly with Jesus' ministry. There's a lot of murmuring going on. Mainly because Jesus is disassociating righteousness with ethnicity. He's challenging the idea that being a Jew, a descendant of Abraham, stands as righteousness in and of itself. We live in a society that struggles with the truth, and they did likewise. And they've worked it out in their hearts and minds that by virtue of their national identity they have a unique relationship with the truth, and redemption of sins. And as Christians, if we're not careful, we'll produce a similar affect by finding virtue in our relationship with "The Church".
The only virtue that Jesus taught was being reborn, believing and obeying his word.
"If you abide in My word, you are truly disciples of Mine"
I think too often many Christians hear only this,
“You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free”
Without the full context this statement by Jesus is utterly false.
Here's some quick condensed context:
Jesus is teaching in the temple on the Sabbath after the Feast of Tabernacles. He had just made His proclamation that He is the light of the world and that those that follow Him would not walk in darkness. The Pharisees challenged Him and charged Him with being a false witness. Jesus claims his testimony is from heaven, is in agreement with God The Father, and God himself testifies to this truth. The Jews are extremely upset because Jesus tells them very pointedly that they'd die in their sins unless they believed in Him. That's it. And that's the lesson for every Christian generation that followed.
Jesus told the Jews and us, that the Messiah is just a stone's throw away, and if they hear him, believe him, and abide in that belief (faith), they are his friends. If they do not, then they are his enemies. It's that simple.
The condition is that you must abide in the light of Jesus’ word. The result is that if you do, then you will be one of His true disciples seeing his light and hearing his words of light.
Isaiah 8:20
"Go to God’s instruction and testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, there will be no light for them."
And therefore, if you are not seeing and hearing his words of light, you remain in darkness. You're merely riding on the wave of the crowds drawn to the deception that the enemy has conjured up by twisting the truth. There are true disciples and there are false disciples. Just because a person claims something does not make it true. The truth of the claim will be demonstrated by whether the person follows the teaching and commands of Jesus or not. To be a disciple of Jesus means to follow Him and become like Him. A true disciple of Jesus will have a change of heart and attitude to match His.
What is truth?
It is that which conforms to reality, and here's the thing, ultimate reality comes from heaven and is controlled by God. Jesus told Pilate that his kingdom is from heaven. Jesus told the Pharisees that people must be born again from heaven. Jesus told his disciples that they must keep their minds set upon heavenly things.
That is why Isaiah 64:6 states that “all our righteous deeds are as filthy rags” before God. It is the heavenly things that will make you well.
Ephesians 2:8 (emphasis mine)
"God saved you by his grace"
(through the heaven-sent gift of faith)
"when you believed."
(You heard and believed the words of Jesus Christ and his truth has set you free from sin and deception when you abide in Him)
"And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God."
(No religion, "Church", extra biblical scripture, or other idols can accomplish this because they are not from heaven above)
Not by any other means, graven in the image of God, or otherwise.
