Matthew 16:17
Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being."
Assertion - Revelation, faith, and the acknowledgement of Christ's divinity is a gift from God, and every believer MUST discover this gift if they hope to follow Jesus.
Jesus is with his disciples in the region of Caesarea Philippi, the center of the pagan religions in the middle east. We’re closing in on the time when He will go to the Holy City and the cross. Before He goes, there’s two things He wants His followers to be clear about:
1. Who He is
2. What He’s going to do
This is basically the final exam for the disciples. The lessons have been revealed, and the examples and labs have been run through. Plenty of time to take notes and time for discussions. Now it's time to show your work.
Nearby is the Jordan River. And as they rest there in the fields and the rocky hills of that region, the disciples and Jesus are reflecting on witnessing miracles, hearing parables and teachings, serving the needs of the followers, and receiving special revelations from heaven. It's a real community of faith and learning in unity with God the Father, The Son of God, and The Holy Spirit. And amidst that proto-Christian church environment, Jesus asks his disciples a pivotal question.
Jesus:
“Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
And Peter Responds:
Peter steps forward and declares, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
Peter recognizes and affirms Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah, King of the Universe. And probably the most important thing to happen is what happens next. Jesus affirms Peter’s declaration. For all those who try to deny Jesus ever said or suggested that he is divine, this affirmation stands as the most notable example of his attestation that he indeed is the Son of God. And that revelation is not affirmed at all really in Peter's testimony, it is only a special revelation from heaven that can affirm this truth with any authority. And therefore, only he who comes from heaven can testify to its truth. And so, he does. He may ask the opinions of men, but the truth is only really impacted by the One true God. It's coming from Him and is given by Him. Mankind has no hold upon it. You cannot ask, if a man has faith in a forest and no one is there to hear, does it make a sound.
“For this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood”
You can't demand God reveal anything, you can only ask in sincere prayer.
This moment of special revelation points to the divine power and it's pointing in particular to the active role of God in imparting spiritual truths to mankind. Something only The Holy Spirit can accomplish.
1 Corinthians 2:10-11
"these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God."
We cannot know God, love God, and understand God's will for our lives unless His Spirit reveals all to us. We cannot even have faith unless He gives it. And this faith is not of our own making. In fact, I can testify that before I had faith I had absolutely no interest in finding it.
1 Corinthians 2:12
"Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God."
Before my sudden conversion I had no use for faith, churches, the scriptures or the people of God. And I sure wasn't plugged in to reception of special revelation from God. Or so I thought. Soon as I woke up to faith the revelations started pouring in, and now I live for it. Then I learned a faith concept called prevenient grace, but that's for another time.
In today’s world, we're inundated with information and diverse opinions. We are in the so-called Information Age. And I admit I am highly plugged into these many different platforms for information and insight. And one thing I've learned is that no matter how insightful you may be, or informed is your opinion, there is so much noise that one can never truly cut through it all and come out on the other end established as the ultimate truth bearer. There is always going to be someone who doesn't get it, won't get it, or can't be bothered to get it. And it's not a consequence or symptom of our Information Age. Jesus experienced the same in his time on earth. Some heard him and were blessed with faith, and many didn't. Some heard, received faith, and proceeded to believe all sorts of strange things that were not from heaven above. Some ran away when the revelation got a little too real for them. And others lashed out like a mob when the revelations started saying things that didn't comport with their prevailing narrative about truths.
Here's The Thing:
Whatever God does he makes known. With human beings, there are hidden depths in our nature that even we cannot fully understand. There are motives that possess us that we aren't always aware of. And it's very much different with God. The divine persons of the Trinity know one another exhaustively, and each understands the thoughts and actions of the others. So, what that means is God is fully known to himself. Even though much about what we know and understand about God is mysterious to us, contrary to what some believe, it is possible for us to learn his thoughts and will. This is made possible by His divine revelation. God is eternal, holy, all-powerful, and so on, but he chooses to express and share those qualities through human words via what some believe to be a divine human avatar who we call Jesus Christ, Lord and God. God's word calls him "the Word". The so-called logos, which basically means the source for all divine reason, and creative order. Which to me means, He's the authoritative divine architect that governs all revelation and inspiration. In another word, he is, as he says, "I AM", and therefore we know him.
In Jesus, the Word became flesh, but the existence of the Word did not begin with Jesus’s incarnation. He is from the beginning and that's important because he is the ground upon which all human understanding is built. When Adam was tasked with studying and naming all the lifeforms on earth, his understanding was given to him by proto-Jesus. And all revelation and understanding, all wisdom is grounded in Him.
John 1:15-17 says:
John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, this was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
And we confess and confirm this in our creeds because it's important that we get this...because there's going to be a test.
John 1:1-3
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being.
Like it or not, no one can escape Jesus Christ. Everything they think and know and don't know is founded and grounded in Him.
The Word is preexistent. Jesus is preexistent. And our thoughts about that can't even exist without Him.
As for me, I surrendered to this reality when I finally understood that I am not God. I don't always make good decisions. I don't always believe the best things about what is right and good. And I finally understand that everything good I do do, is not my own doing, but the work of The Word and The Holy Spirit revealing what is good and right to me.
When I think about this reality, I think about The Apostle Paul's comments.
Romans 7:15-17
"The trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin. I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate. But if I know that what I am doing is wrong, this shows that I agree that the law is good. So I am not the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it."
And so, if I'm this messed up and broken in my own heart and mind, how the hell can I imagine that I know better than God? I love God's law with all my heart, but my nature fails Him all too often.
Romans 7:23
"there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me."
And that's my problem. I need to get with God when these things crop up. No church doctrine can resolve it, if it could the law of Moses would have perfected everyone long ago. No... only the divine revelation can help us overcome. We need God's love, forgiveness and mercy to help us understand our own nature and get us aligned with God's will. We should resist trying to manage the situation by our own understanding.
Roman 7:24
"what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?"
Who?
Well, that brings us back to the final exam question. Who you believe Jesus is will determine your success when faced with these challenges of sin and temptation. You're not going to save yourself. You're not going to reveal truth for yourself. You're not going to forgive yourself. And you're not going to redeem yourself.
Be sure to get your mind right on this. It's only a matter of life and death.
God bless you all now and forever.
Amen
