Matthew 6:1
“Be careful not to practice your charitable righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. Otherwise, you have no reward with your Father in heaven."
The Law of righteousness:
When you give, don't be a hypocrite, and do it in secret.
When you pray, don't be a hypocrite, and do it in secret.
When you fast, don't be a hypocrite, and do it in secret.
The only appropriate motivation for obeying the law is the desire to win the approval of God and to glorify him. And only your right motives will justify you. You're never going to outperform the outward signs and deeds of the Pharisees, they had that down pat. But you can do better than the scribes and Pharisees by avoiding heart-sins, heart-adultery, heart-murder, and heart-self-righteousness. By maintaining and keeping watch upon the heart of your religion (meaning what you love), by doing what you do from an inward, life-giving principle. To be approved of God, and not for the applause of men.
Jesus focuses in on three principles of your heart-religion. Mind, body, and spirit.
Prayers from our soul - The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. Prayers offered in faith will restore the soul. The word “effectiveness” comes from the Greek word “energeo” from which we get the English word “energy.” In the New Testament, James 5:16-18 uses Elijah as an example of righteous effective prayer. Elijah's prayer was considered righteous and energetic. What does that mean? Was it lofty and loud, bold and blasting like fireworks on the Fourth of July? No. It wasn't the prayer itself. It wasn't the show. It wasn't the words. It wasn't the cadence. It wasn't even ended, "in the name of Jesus". The praying man was righteous. Remember, it's the prayers of a "righteous man" that has great effectiveness. Elijah had separated himself from the culturally sin-sick people who were living the life of the Baals. His society was captured and corrupted by their sins and idolatry, and he rejected that culture. And in the context of that lifestyle, Elijah prays and his prays are VERY effective. Your prayers aren't effective? Take a closer look at the motives. Take a closer look at your heart. Take a closer look at your confession. And take a closer look at your walk.
Charitable giving from our blessings - God gives us life, breath, sunshine, rain, and everything else. And we should be perfect givers like our Father in heaven. Almsgiving is meant to bless the poor with the blessings of God. It's our duty, but it's not meant to be a superstition. It's not meant to generate ill-gotten gains for us in return, or merely be the skim from off our excess. It's meant to be generous and joyful. It's meant to bear spiritual fruit in both the recipient and the giver. It's not meant to be used as a means for covering up our sins. Generosity is not a means for our salvation. God has already generously outsourced that to his Son Jesus, and you can't out give God. If you were to adopt the idea that you can atone for your failures by extravagantly paying tithes and offerings, you would be immediately guilty of committing the spiritual crime of self-indulgence and salvation by works. The value of your offering is not about its monetary compensation, it's about your heart and the vitality of your Christian life. Christian giving naturally happens when Christ is truly first in your life, even while in the midst of severe trials. It's sacrificial, not superficial. It's not a photo-op, it's not meant to be theatrical, it's meant to be done in secret. Jesus said to not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. He's addressing our innermost thoughts. The point is that even as others are unaware of our good deeds, many times we are still self-conscious of them. We need to practice forgetfulness in our giving. We give out of the joy of giving, and immediately forget about it. Move on. Put it out of your mind. Just do it and move on. Brush off any desire to be seen or acknowledged. Do it in secret and be happy in the blessings that God gave through you.
Fasting from our bodies - A simple definition for fasting is, "saying no". Saying no to worldliness and indulgence. That could be about food, or any manner of things that impacts the human body's response to its environment. There are a lot of reasons to abstain from indulging, spiritual and physical. In the case of the Christian hearing Jesus speak on this on the Mount, the reason has to do with learning about separation. Jesus isn't establishing a Lenten moment. Jesus isn't making a sacrament out of fasting. What he is doing is teaching about the heart of a righteous soul that has practiced the spiritual fruit of self-control. He's instructing his followers to separate themselves from their indulgences and especially from indulging in selfrighteousness. Clean up your forehead, put on your nice clothes, get your mind right, and do it in secret. Whatever your reason for doing it, if you are going to do it for your soul, do it in secret.
Mind, body, and spirit. Jesus wants us to empower our effective religion of the heart by doing it in secret. For an audience of One.
Jesus obviously doesn't understand social media...or does he?
It's not about the likes and viral posts. The content is meant for direct messages only. It's no secret what God can do, but as for you?
Whatever you do, DM God, and move on.
Amen.
God bless. Shhh
