Zechariah 7:8-10
Then this message came to Zechariah from the Lord:
“This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to one another. Do not oppress widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against each other."
Prayer and fasting is an expression of an internal, spiritual reality. It's not done for God, it's done for the one who loves God. The practices are by design a form of obedience training. For the training of the mind. Getting your mind right in alignment with God's Spirit. If God's spirit is flowing out from the olive tree, prayer and fasting is the conduit through which the oil flows.
This isn't an instinctual process, it's not a biochemical electrical activity of the brain. Prayer and fasting is a soulish communication, a spiritual awareness between the Lord of angel armies and his people via the Holy Spirit. The purpose for this visionary prayer gathering is to provide guidance and support to those who have been affected by the Holy Ghost. It's a necessary part of that connection. You must know the truth in order to know what is happening around you, to learn discerning ways so you'll get your mind right.
So, that flow of Holy oil [the Spirit] must be encouraged by prayer and fasting, but even more importantly, the Spirit's purpose is that the instructions given would effect a moral and right decision. Zechariah's visions revealed to him that his ancestors did the prayers and fasting, they did the festivals, they played church, and they would ignore the instructions given and instead chose stubborn defiance. Their prayers and fasting efforts were done to satisfy themselves and their self-interests.
The Lord sent visions meant to shape Israel’s social principles, and they refused to receive them. The principles never changed. The ideas were always about mercy and grace, ideas about forgiveness and a tender concern for one another. The Spirit was aiming for a people who didn't take advantage of the weak. Especially in commerce.
The thing we need to know about the Israeli people in Zechariah's time was, they had spent a lifetime in exile in Babylon. This time was designed to work out the Baals and other idolatrous things that had poisoned their lives before the fall of Jerusalem. And in many ways it work. A remnant, a new generation had returned to rebuild the city. And yes, they had been cleansed of the pagan idolatry of the Baals. Yet, they picked up some of the bad habits of their Medo-Persian captors, they brought with them the gods of commerce, commercialism, pragmatism. They had a shallow view of spiritual things, mainly a surface level conviction. This is why Haggai, a contemporary of Zechariah, preached about how the people were neglecting the rebuilding of the temple. Instead of getting to work on the Lord's temple they focused on building up new homes and farms for themselves. They took the saying, "you are what you eat" very seriously. They were nothing if not dedicated capitalists. And they were paying the price for their negligence. They lived in perpetual frustration and discontentment. Nothing ever satisfied them. Their indifference to the growth and spiritual prosperity of the city and its mission was a sign of their failure to love the glory of God. The fruit of their spiritual life was chronic frustration, they had a halfhearted obedience. And the flow of Holy Spirit inspiration was limited by their commitment to commercialism. They were involved in the rebuilding efforts, but what they accomplished was a poor substitute. It seemed good enough for government work to most of the people. They were involved and they felt like that connection with the rebuilding effort was good enough. What was missing was the spiritual power, the renewing of their minds. And since their motivations were commercial and not cosmic they grew frustrated and quit.
They needed to hear the words of Jesus...
"seek the kingdom first, and all these other things will be added" (Matthew 6:33).
They got to thinking that their work on the temple was of so little significance that they might as well quit. Meanwhile God says, "Take courage, . . . work!" Get up and get on your knees. Pray, fast, and obey my commands. And let's begin with how you're treating each other.
He [God] doesn't want crusty diehards in his work; he wants free and joyful laborers. And he knows that a loving merciful community of believers will encourage just exactly that sort of behavior. God promises to take your work, fill it with his glory, and make your labors a million times over more great than you ever imagined. If only you would love mercy, do justice, and walk humbly with him.
Renew your faith by first renewing your mind.
God isn't impressed by your business acumen. Religion doesn't please God. Nationality doesn't please God. Self righteous justification and virtue-signaling vanity doesn't please God. He's only pleased by faith. God blesses faith. God increases faith. The only way to please God is to believe in his Son Jesus and obey his Spirit. That is living by faith. Walking in faith. Pleasing God.
