⛪️ They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer. Acts 2:42
This is the church I want to see and be a part of, if it genuinely exists.
"They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching"
These were the witnesses who had traveled and lived together with Jesus during his three year earthly ministry. And they taught the new followers the truth about God's kingdom that Christ Jesus testified about. They shared the stories and lessons the Messiah taught. They spoke about the importance of repentance and forgiveness in Christ. They made certain to pass these things on to others both in writing and in speaking. And they administered the proper course for following Christ's way according to the instructions they learned from The Lord. They did this because they were daily devoted to these teachings. It became their life, it became everything to them.
They devoted themselves..."to the fellowship"
The promised gift of the Holy Spirit had come. They prophesied. Signs and wonders were happening. God's presence was evident in so many ways. And collectively they became a community of believers who worked together to create and develop a Christian movement. They were devoted to each other. They had a strong faith and that faith bound them together as a team. They did this daily, it was a natural part of their relationship with Christ and with each other. Like a family. Like God's children.
They devoted themselves..."to the breaking of bread"
They kept close to the holy ordinances. They preached, teached, baptized, and they broke bread. They kept these practices they were taught when Jesus was amongst them. Especially essential was the communion supper, "the Lord's supper", the breaking of bread. And they did this in their homes. It wasn't a temple ordinance, they served the blessing home by home. Each home was like a tiny chapel. They broke bread together in these homes as worship and fellowship.
And they devoted themselves, "to prayer"
After the Holy Spirit had been poured out on them, they devoted themselves to continual intercessory prayers and prayers of thanksgiving. This was their worship. Their prayers were giving praise to God and they prayed for the favor of all the people. They were kind and loving to one another. Their hearts were knitted together in love, prayers, and charity for one another. They were literally known by the culture of that age by their love for one another.
They devoted themselves to frequent meetings for Christian instruction. Small groups, home chapels, being the church, and they increased in love. They were very cheerful people, the historical secular records testify to this, and they were very generous in the use of what they had. Everything they had was an offering sacrificed to the community.
And God blessed them with an abundance of Spiritual gifts.
I find this inspiring because you would have thought that these first Christian people would want nothing at all to do with the common crowds and people from everywhere. They had just recently watched as Christ Jesus was so violently run down by the crowds and mobs of evil people who shouted, "Crucify him, crucify him"! You would think they'd keep to themselves having no interest in growing their community. Instead the word of God was spoken by them openly and boldly, they did wonders, and God blessed their endeavours publicly. God, through them, was adding souls daily to this congregation. God did this. It wasn't anything they did by their own strength. It wasn't a Madison Avenue advertisement team that energized the crowds. God inspired them, not a social media influencer.
Acts 2:43
"Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and signs were being performed through the apostles."
Where was the band?
Where was the light show?
Where was the coffeehouse?
No long ornate hats and robes that signaled respect is expected. They had an abundance of the Spiritual gifts that produced awe and respect. They had kindness, faith, perseverance, and love for one another that inspired the crowds. And they preached the truth, sometimes in awful terms that strangely both convicted the wicked hypocrites and convinced the converted hearers who loved God. It wasn't by any means the modern soft sell church of this relativistic age. They didn't make the scriptures relevant to the cultural masses, their lives were an example that was relevant to the scriptures and Christ's teachings.
They were The Church.
They weren't "going to church".
The church was them.
They were the primitive church before the deception and selfishness crept in.
It didn't take long for the devils to find an opportunity, but for a while things were as Jesus intended.
How I wish we could find this "being the church" opportunity again.
I suppose all we can do is persevere in love for God and his words of truth. Trying to pray through all things and loving one another to the best of our abilities.
