Sodom’s Dreadful Warning and God’s Gracious Rescue
2 Peter 2:6-10
"if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials [temptations] and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, and especially those who indulge [who go after the flesh] in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority."
Jude 7
"In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire."
Peter is building a case against false teachers who promote immorality and deny God’s authority. He points to historical examples of God’s judgment to show that rebellion never goes unpunished. Jude covers very similar ground, warning about ungodly people who have secretly infiltrated the church, perverting grace into a license for immorality. Both letters connect these examples to intruders who; indulge "corrupt desire of the flesh", despise authority, pursued "strange flesh".
In a world that increasingly normalizes immorality and mocks divine authority, these passages are sobering. God’s judgment on sin is certain, He will not spare the unrepentant. The wicked will experience the resurrection of condemnation.
It's important to realize the full extent of this. Sodom and Gomorrah are condemned not just to destruction but "to extinction," reduced to ashes as a perpetual "example" of the fate awaiting the ungodly. The trajectory of unchecked rebellion is not cultural progress but "extinction", eternal separation from God.
What this means is, the resurrection is not universally good news; for the unrepentant it is "the resurrection of condemnation" (John 5:29).
Yet in the same breath, Scripture highlights God’s rescue of righteous Lot. Though flawed, Lot was deeply distressed, his soul daily tormented by the lawless deeds he saw and heard. This shows: God sees the grief of His people in a wicked culture and knows how to deliver the godly from trials.
Today, the false teachers infiltrating the church repeat this ancient pattern; twisting grace into license for lust and rejecting all authority. Their end is certain, kept under punishment until the day of judgment and the resurrection of condemnation.
Sobering Truth:
Hell is not a metaphor or annihilation; it is everlasting fire for unrepentant rebels. God displays its reality in history (Sodom’s ashes) and Scripture to warn us now.
Quick Heart Check:
Do I truly believe hell is real and eternal?
The Bible uses several terms for the realm of the dead and final punishment, often translated as "hell". And distinctions exist between temporary holding places and eternal judgment.
There is Sheol, the grave or realm of the dead.
Another is Hades, the underworld; sometimes divided between comfort and torment.
And then there is Gehenna, Jesus’ most commonly used term. Refers to the Valley of Hinnom near Jerusalem, a historical site of child sacrifice and later a burning trash dump. It symbolizes unquenchable fire and destruction.
Our focus scripture today, 2 Peter 2:4, refers to Tartarus, deep abyss holding fallen angels in chains of darkness until judgment.
The gospel of Luke and the book of Revelation refers to, the Abyss/Bottomless Pit, which is essentially a prison for demons.
And finally, the final, eternal destination is the Lake of Fire. Described as burning with sulfur; the "second death" for the unsaved, Satan, and his forces.
The phrase "sulfur fire" (or "fire and brimstone" ) evokes intense, agonizing death, both in biblical descriptions of divine judgment and in real-world scientific contexts.
Sulfur burns with a characteristic blue-yellow flame and produces highly toxic gases. When sulfur burns, it produces sulfur dioxide (SO₂) gas; a colorless, pungent toxin that burns the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. It causes a kind of asphyxiation, and death within minutes as it leads to rapid airway obstruction. Death is excruciating; choking, burning sensations internally, an inability to breathe, and all while conscious until collapse.
Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed by raining "fire and brimstone" (Genesis 19:24); total incineration and asphyxiation. Some link this to real sulfur deposits (brimstone) and ash layers at ancient sites near the Dead Sea.
Now, sulfur balls and ash are real but explained naturally (geology, earthquakes, fires), and therefore not direct evidence of a supernatural "raining" sulfur (brimstone). Yet archaeology confirms the natural phenomena, and Scripture frames it as God’s justice on immorality. Either way, the warning remains; unrepentant sin leads to destruction.
We don't always get paid here on earth, but we can all rest assured that we will get paid in eternity.
Final Truth
Sin’s "wages" (Romans 6:23) may delay here on earth, but eternity ensures full payment, either borne by Christ on the cross or endured forever in hell.
Heart Check:
Do I believe this enough to repent fully, grieve sin like Lot, and warn others?
Friends,
Cling to Jesus, the only escape from the wrath to come.
Prayer:
Lord, awaken us to hell’s reality and Your rescue in Christ. Keep us from twisting grace into license. Deliver us from this wicked age as You delivered Lot. Amen.
