The Crevice Garden Church: A Metaphor
Read Acts 23:11
That night the Lord appeared to Paul and said, “Be encouraged, Paul. Just as you have been a witness to me here in Jerusalem, you must preach the Good News in Rome as well.”
Parachurch Among The Rocky Soils, Cultivating The Rocky Souls
"If your spirit is rooted into His Spirit, you will learn to thrive in remembrance of Him."
Rocks make for a great looking garden above ground, but when the soil below is made up of the same impenetrable stone, plant roots have a tough time getting to the nutrients they need to sustain life. Even though, all soils are comprised of rocks in some stage of composition, the rocks themselves aren't all that biologically active, which means that they don't enhance the soil's productivity much. Also you might not be able to dig down, instead you'll have to build out and up. And what you plant is going to have to be rugged, super hardy, adventitious in it's rooting behavior, and blessed by the hand of God.
Jesus taught:
"Other seed fell among rocks. It began to grow, but the plant soon wilted and died for lack of moisture." (Luke 8:6)
Why did it die?
"Lack of moisture".
Well obviously someone forgot to water, and probably didn't cultivate organic matter into the rocky souls, I mean soils.
Jesus went on to explain:
"The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the message and immediately receive it with joy, but in times of testing they desert." (Matthew 13:20)
There are times in our lives, The Lord may lead us through a lifeless, barren desert, and a time of testing too, but desert times can be a place of special growth, where God can do a very special work in you. It's special because it's closer to God. You're more reliant upon Him. He is there beside you to bring you to a place of cool, refreshing waters flowing with His grace. God is always faithful. And He will walk with you, through the darkest moments. He'll be leading you along the way. After you've exhausted all your own efforts, he'll be there to bring you home. That's the good news, but what's the hard truth? Truth is you've got to cultivate good souls, I mean soils!
Enhance It: You've Got To Cultivate The Hard Truth
Sometimes it can seem like the world is just making it too hard to grow spiritually. Like Pharaoh forcing the Israelites to make bricks without straw (Exodus 5:7), the children of God need to gather to themselves their own supply of straw. And if they don't take the time to gather the straw, they won't make the quota of brick they must. So try they must, and do they must. Why? Because without the straw you'll have brittle weak bricks, with no lasting value. And you'll have no peace and a pile of brittle bricks. This isn't about going to church, remember, the seed is the word of God. This is about cultivating God's word into your soul and life. The straw is what binds the clay into a strong brick. The straw is the word of God. Straw is adding organic life into the clay in order to make it stronger and better for building strong buildings.
Compost is very loose, compared with the original hard clay and bedrock. It creates air spaces for water, nutrients and of course provides a path for air to move through the soil strata and give the plants a place to reach out and get deep rooted. Plants with shallow roots need constant attention and use up resources far too quickly. Also, frankly it's kind of lazy to just dump a few inches of good soil and mulch on top of the rocky ground. It wouldn't work to just spread compost over the compacted soil and plant in it alone. That would become a very shallow rooted environment that is vulnerable to extremes. The plants would be unhappy because, believe it or not, they need the clay soil to grow in. Clay and rock isn't bad for the plants, it's just got a few missing good characteristics. It can't be lacking in organic matter and can't be compacted if the plants are going to dig down deep (it can't be hardhearted). The plants need air spaces and a stable well drained root zone in order to thrive (they need nurturing, they need ongoing ministry). It's not enough to just hear the good news, they need to become rooted into it.
Pick Your Blessings: Plant seeds
It takes a special kind of plant to thrive among the rocks. It's not for everybody. Dianthus loves the reflected heat from the rocks it's nestled between. As does Lavender, creeping Phlox, and Rock Cress. In contrast, Creeping Thyme doesn't flourish in a similar planting (they're a little wimpy). This doesn't mean it won't thrive but it will "creep" towards a more suitable situation nearby. Alyssum is a great rock garden plant, but deer love it and you might find yourself having to replace it. Rocks placed around a plant insulate it just like mulch, keeping it drier on top but moist underneath, so you can water less frequently. And natures gardeners; soil critters, like worms and pill bugs of all kinds love to hide out under the rocks working the earth and producing byproducts that are needed by the plants. But don't just run to the garden center and pick up a potted plant to squeeze in between the gravels. The more fibrous roots found in larger potted plants often have a tougher time penetrating the hard soil. After all they began life in pristine soils and protected environments. The younger, more pliable roots of seedlings may have a better chance of getting established if they're spread out almost on top of the rocky soil at first in search of a path leading to deeper in roads for sustainable growth. They learn the hard way to survive. Truth is, faith will sometimes seem offensive, but faith isn't just about believing, especially if Jesus isn't also your Lord, the Lord of your life. If you're not rooted into Him, you will wilt when the drought comes. If your spirit is rooted into His Spirit, you will learn to thrive in remembrance of Him.
So should you remove most rocks from the soil? I suppose so, if you're willing to take the time to do it, and that's especially true if you're putting in a new vegetable garden. But truth be told, breaking up the ground and removing the clay and rock is really not about the planting so much as it's about the comfort zone of the gardener. It's about making it easier on the gardener to cultivate a planting more suitable for the gardener. Even so, vegetables are annuals and they need all the help they can get (they're special garden snobs). So a lot depends upon what and why you're planting. Some gardeners and garden plants seem to like doing the seemingly impossible. They're a stubborn sort, (they're pioneers, rugged individualists).
"Don't tell me I can't plant among the rocks!"
It's not for everyone, but the rewards can be something beautiful. It's going to be unusual. It's going to take a lot of careful care and planning. It's not always going to be pretty or manicured, not the typical curb appeal. But when it does "it's thing", it does it like no other. It's a unique treasure in the kingdom of God. Remember, God is a gardener, He is doing a work in us that only He could do, and it’s personally tailored to each one of our lives. Hardship, difficulty, and even wondering if we will ever be ready to do what God has laid on our heart, does have its fulfillment in God's timing. God is testing our faith. Believe it or not, there will be a time when we will thank Him for every moment that we have had to wait and persevere.
Summary:
Acts 23:11
He [Paul] is in prison...men are outside clambering for the execution of the Apostle Paul. And the following night the Lord himself stood near Paul and said, “Be brave; for as you have solemnly and faithfully witnessed about Me at Jerusalem, so you must also testify at Rome.”
Paul has just begun a parachurch ministry of spreading the seed among the rocks. And God personally comes to him and tells him it's going to be hard, dangerous, among horrible circumstances, and VERY fruitful. It's going to be beautiful. It's going to be strong. At times it's going to get deep. And other times it's going to be harsh. But do not worry for the Lord will be with you. This ain't gonna be a preaching to the choir among the saints safe and cozy in the sanctuary. This is going to be rock hard.
May God bless you deep down into your very soul. Rest assured in God's work and word living within you.
