If we (believe) trust God we get what God can do...is doing in us.
Our faith's work is to trust in God. Let's take a deep look into the word "believe".
To translate this as “believe” is unfortunate because in our world “believe” is a mental act. But the Old Testament Hebrews of Israel didn’t fail because they refused to acknowledge what God had done. They all “believed” He rescued them. They all “believed” He provided manna and quail and water. What they didn’t do was trust Him. They continued to lean into their foreign gods. They continued in their sin.
New Testament lesson:
The story goes; it was round about midnight, there was a great earthquake. So powerful was this earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. All the prison doors were thrust open, and all the prisoners bonds were broken. The prison guard saw that the prison doors were standing open, and realizing his fate, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners must have escaped. Seeing this, the apostle Paul cried out with a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.” The guard, trembling with fear, fell down before Paul. Knowing these Christian men and the love for God's way that they continually shared every day, he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” And he said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
"What must I do to be saved?"
"believe..."
Believe -
Hebrew: אָמַן, ʾāman Verb: ʾāman means “to believe, trust.”...turning to the right, a matter of faith being built up, established, nursed, fostered, nourished, standing firm. It's active, it's alive, it's working continuously, steadfastly. It's “trustworthy, and faithful."
So it's not an act of just the will or mind. It's not simply a creedal protestation, not just a cognitive affirmation of the truth. It's not learning a matter of fact and choosing to accept that teaching alone. It's a turning point. It's about being transformed, a changed heart, a new heart. It's about taking that teaching to heart and turning from what was, and following after the way that this good news leads. Relying religiously upon that good news. Putting your trust fully in the source of that gospel. Confirmed, verified, and trusting unconditionally. Awake and growing. Trust entails deciding to follow the way towards a future action without future confirmation. That's faith.
Application:
I can say, I believe in the state of Florida. And yet saying that doesn't mean I'm doing anything about that fact. It doesn't mean I'm going there, or choosing to live there. Yes there is a place called Florida, and so I believe this to be true. And there the story ends. To "believe" [aman] is a causative thing. It's got nothing to do with proof, not about accepting the proof. This "believe" is about what you DO after having seen and heard all the proofs and lessons, and examples, all the prophets words and works, all the believers personal examples that prepared the way, ALL this WORK already happened and already convinced your mind about God's Son rising from the dead. You may believe you've got a job, but do you really? This is about - WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO NOW?! What are you prepared to do?
