Don’t Be a 1/3rd Christian: Let the Living Word Divide Soul and Spirit
Hebrews 4:12
"For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, even penetrating as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart."
Some things we do outwardly are not necessarily coming from a place of honest worship and love for God.
The Bible is very clear that one day everything will be brought into the light. Not just our outward deeds, but the hidden motives, thoughts, and intentions behind them. The same living, active Word that pierces and discerns right now is preparing us for that final day of full disclosure before Christ.
For believers, this judgment is not about eternal condemnation, (that was settled at the cross) instead, it is a judgment of our works and stewardship as God’s children. It will reveal what was truly done for His glory versus what was done in the flesh, from the soul rather than spirit.
The Bible in our passage today uses two main Greek words in:
• Soul (psyche) referring to inner life of a person in its natural, human dimension. The so called "inner man". It’s what makes you “you” as a human being interacting with the world. If you're good you're good. If you're false you're false. It is influenced heavily by your experiences, culture, fleshly nature, and even sin.
• Spirit (pneuma) points to the Godward, immaterial, and eternal dimension of a person. God designed this connection into every human made in His image. This is our conscience, capacity for worship, communion with the Holy Spirit, and the eternal life breathed into us by God.
Sometimes "soul" and "spirit" are used interchangeably to refer to our whole immaterial self. For example:
Mary says, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior." Here they overlap poetically.
So there is a great deal of nuance between the soul and spirit. We can have a great thirst for God in our spirit while at the same time being trouble in our soul.
Scripture says, "The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit"
The Word of God helps us to discern when we’re operating out of mere "soulish" effort versus true spiritual life. This is why studying and growing in our understanding of the scriptures is essential to our spiritual journey.
Why?
This discernment is preparation for that day when our motives will be revealed. Many "good Christian activities" will be revealed as largely soulish on that day (wood, hay, straw). Only what was done in genuine dependence on the Spirit will remain as gold, silver, and precious stones. And so, the hope is that the more we let the sharp sword of the Word do its work now, the less painful and more fruitful that future revealing will be.
In our spiritual life the emphasis should stay on submission to Scripture and dependence on the Holy Spirit rather than picking a "side" in the many debates. Rather than getting overly entangled in theological debates, lean into humble vulnerable submission.
This posture is perfectly modeled in the flow of Hebrews 4 itself. The chapter doesn’t invite us into an academic analysis of soul and spirit. It calls us instead to let the living Word expose us, to run to our sympathetic High Priest with confidence. Approach the Bible not primarily to master it, but to let it master us. Allow the sword to cut where it wants to cut . Let it hurt if it needs to hurt. Let it uncover what it needs to uncover.
Pray:
"Lord, I don’t fully understand all the nuances of my inner being…but You do. Search me. Judge me now, so I may stand clean before You on that Day."
As James 1:21 puts it:
"Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls."
The Holy Spirit doesn’t give us a lecture on anthropology, He gives us a mirror and an invitation.
It is not merely the Bible sitting on your shelf or information you’ve heard. It is the Word of God that has been supernaturally planted inside you by the Holy Spirit. It becomes an internal, living reality.
Jesus says the seed is "the word of the kingdom." When it falls on good soil (humble, vulnerable, truthful, honest), it takes root and produces fruit. When we receive it with meekness it takes root (becomes implanted) and does its deep work of dividing soul and spirit, exposing thoughts and intentions.
Reality Check:
There are saved Christians, people who are "getting in". And they've been living a Christian life for decades. Living basically on year of Christian life over and over again. Living that same year for decades.
Their Christian life has plateaued. Outwardly they look faithful (church attendance, service, correct beliefs), but there is little fresh fruit, little deeper growth, and little movement into the "rest" Hebrews 4 talks about. I suppose it's like an Olympics event. There can only be one gold medal winner. And of course a silver and bronze. And some where in there is a last place athlete.
Think about that person.
Anyone can be that one.
He could be the absolute worst athletic person ever. Doesn't matter because somebody's gotta be last. Doesn’t even matter how far last he is. He last! And last is last. And there will be that guy in heaven.
Salvation is by grace through faith alone; everyone who is in Christ crosses the finish line and enters the Kingdom. But the rewards at the Judgment Seat of Christ will vary greatly, just as placements vary in a race. There is going to be a guy who came through the fire burned to a cinder.
Don't be a 1/3rd Christian. No one has to be that person. If we’re honest, many believers live as though they are only one-third engaged; body showing up, soul going through the motions (emotions, habits, religious routine), but the spirit under-nourished and under-yielded to the Holy Spirit. The same year repeated for decades. Outwardly respectable. Inwardly stagnant. And at the end, much of their labor burned to a cinder.
The Good News:
The same grace that saves us is available right now to break the cycle of plateaued Christianity. The living and active Word is still sharp. The throne of grace is still open. The sympathetic High Priest is still interceding. The living and active Word is still sharp enough to cut through decades of routine.
You don’t have to stay stuck.
You don’t have to be last place.
You don’t have to arrive in heaven burned to a cinder with little to show.
The Lord is calling for full Christians; body, soul, and spirit fully surrendered. Men and women who let the implanted Word go deep, who allow it to divide soul and spirit, and who learn to walk in the rest of God instead of religious striving.
Pray for the full mind, body, soul and spirit life. Make yourself available to it. Trust Jesus to show up in that genuine hope. He's going to honor that effort.
