Jesus The Commander-in-chief
Matthew 25:21
"His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You were faithful over a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Share your master’s joy.’"
Go ahead and read the entire parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30). Look at all the contexts. And now ask yourself, what is the message here.
It seems to me that what we're seeing here is an explanation about spiritual warfare.
I know, you're saying to yourself, how is this about spiritual warfare?
Well, here's what I see. This parable suggests that it's critically important that we put on "the shoes of readiness" (Ephesians 6:15) when we enter into the spiritual life. And like it or not, when you accept the weight of the Gospel truth from the Lord God Almighty, it comes with a great responsibility and immediately sets us up and against the demonic world that comes from the outer darkness.
The Shoes of Readiness:
"And having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace."
A "talent" is a kind of weight, it is a measure of value that is based upon weight. And so, I want you to think about something here. From this perspective and understanding. Think about the weight of Christ's cross that you've taken up. How heavy a burden is it for you? What measure has God gifted you with? What are you doing with it? Are you doing anything?
That cross you took up when you first received the good news involves active service. But you're not left to your own strength to do what must done. Jesus equipped and continues to equip you for this service. Through the works of the Holy Spirit, he has gifted you with His strength to make what you will of that gospel. To make what YOU WILL. It has to be your will. God predetermines glory for us, but he leaves it up to us to find the will to do his will.
He readies our feet to go and share it. Do you understand what that means? What is the preparation of the gospel of peace?
Let me try and explain. The word "preparation", as used here, isn't what it seems on the surface. It's better understood to mean "foundation". Like saying something is set in stone. Think of it like this, when you were converted, The Spirit set the truth of the gospel in stone within your heart. He literally wrote it on your heart. It's part of you now. That gospel truth has become one with you and it stands as a foundational truth that has brought about peace between you and your Creator. You can't escape the truth of it. It is part of your soul now. And therefore, having once learned God's will for your life, it is not for you to leave it left undone.
The Gospel is looked upon as a declaration of “peace on earth, goodwill towards men.” The Gospel brings about peace and is the only thing that does that. But it also brings with it a command, an expectation to go out and fight to keep it. Because it's this simple, if we are warring with the devil we are at peace with God. So, peace and war go and come together. Just like you can't have light without darkness. The Gospel is ‘the Gospel of peace,’ precisely because it enlists us in Christ’s army and sends us out to fight Christ’s battles which is establishing peace on earth.
Why do we fight for Him? Why have his battles become ours?
If you were to ask me that question, my answer would be because he's the kind of leader I have great respect, awe, and love for. I see him as my leader. I see him as my commander-in-chief. And I follow him because he's a servant. He could have had others serve Him while he was on earth, but he said, "the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve" (Mark 10:45).
I don't know if it's true, but I heard this story once. During the American Revolution, there was this man riding on a horse. And as he rode he came upon a group of soldiers who were repairing a wall that served as a defensive barrier. These soldiers were exhausted, but their commanding officer was just barking orders at them. “Come on guys get this done.” He wasn't helping them, he just shouted out his commands and stood by watching them work. Then this rider stops and asks the commanding officer, “Why aren’t you helping them.” The officer says, “Because I’m a corporal, sir.” “Oh, okay, I’m sorry about that.” And so, the man gets off his horse and helps the soldiers shore up the wall. When it’s all done, he goes to the corporal and says, “Mr. Corporal. The next time you need help you go find your commander and chief and I’ll be happy to help you again.” The rider's name was none other than George Washington.
The King of the universe didn’t have to do anything for us, and yet he did. He lowered himself to become a man. He lived among us to free us from sin, death, and the devil. And then he rolled up his sleeves, picked up a towel, and washed the feet of his friends. He came as a servant in order to build an army. He prepared those feet he washed. He equipped those feet. And he sent them out to do battle against the enemies of The Gospel.
How do you see Jesus?
Is he sweet baby Jesus?
Is he Jesus the Good Shepherd, Jesus the Redeemer, Jesus the provider, Jesus the healer, Jesus the Bread of life, Jesus the Servant King?
Is he Jesus the Commander-in-chief?
Jesus didn't wash his disciples' feet because he wanted them to feel better. In fact they felt very uncomfortable. He wasn't giving them foot massages so they can feel welcomed and part of a community. No, he was preparing them for war and service in his army. The community he was establishing was that of an army of servant warriors. Warrior priests.
Christians who refuse to use the gifts God has given them for his work do in fact encounter an angry and judging Christ when he returns. It's written and it will be done according to his judgment and will. There's no escaping that reality. The Servant King is also The One “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” (Revelation 5:2).
Earlier I mentioned the weight of the gifts, the talents. Jesus washed those gifts into our feet. He washed our souls from the soles of our feet and put his righteousness upon us. From our feet it systemically became a renewing of our entire self. A new heart. A renewed mind. And strength to endure the tribulations and trials that would surely come. Jesus called that burden light. And it is light, but it comes with a great responsibility.
Matthew 25:40
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
Our spiritual readiness is protected by our spiritual boots. They protect us when we are on the march of life. They also help us in the hour of our greatest conflicts. We, who are the children of God, have been given provision, talents. Which was made for us in respect to the gospel of peace which God has provided for us to help us find our way home when the battle is finished.
John Bunyan wrote in his famous work, "The Holy War", picturing the human soul as a walled city, or a fortress. And it is exactly like that. And out there, in the world are ninja-like assassins trying to creep inside through all the many cracks and crevices in our walls.
Do you know how these demon ninjas find their way into our houses?
They find their way in through the shadows. They aren't assaulting our walls head on. They're creeping in through the shadows and by way of the undefended weaknesses in our walls.
In today's scripture lesson we have a wicked lazy servant who says...
"I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’" (Matthew 25:25)
Imagine now if those ninjas were going up the shadowy walls and suddenly the whole area was flooded with light. They’d be completely exposed, and they'd be helpless to finish their dark mission. That light is the readiness of the Gospel.
So, we are at war with both spiritual and flesh enemies. We need to know that. And we need to cast light upon that battle. That is what the Gospel does. It is LIGHT! It exposes the darkness and chases out every evil thing hiding in the shadows of our own hearts. It makes things visible that are unseen by the world. It makes things clearer. It gives insight that nobody else has. It's our cleft in the rock (Exodus 33:22) where God hides us and protects us.
1 Corinthians 10:4
"They drank (that spiritual drink) from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ."
We were saved by faith; we endure by faith, and we walk in the readiness of that faith.
Look again at Ephesians 6 verses 10 through 13. It says,
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground. And after you’ve done everything, to stand.”
It's about standing firm in the truth. Enduring the trials and standing firm. If we endure and fight that fight, we will reign with Him. If we confess Jesus before men, he will confess us before God in heaven. If we are faithful, he will remain faithful.
If you endure, you're a true believer. If you do not endure, you're not a true believer.
Don't be afraid.
We are protected by the power of God for a salvation ready to be delivered in the last days.
Moses, a mortal man, could not see God’s face and live. God protected Moses by placing him in the cleft of a rock as He passed by. God covered Moses in that cleft of the rock with His own hand. He protected Moses from the harm that would surely befall a mortal man who looked directly upon the full glory of God. Similarly, we are being hidden in Christ. The believer is sheltered from eternal death by their faith in Christ. And from that shelter our Servant King is preparing us for his coming. He is readying us. Fitting our feet to go out in the Gospel.
Do we have a desire to submit willingly to that task?
If so, we have an unshakable assurance and will no doubt hear from Him,
"Well done, good and faithful servant!"
