Headed on the Road to Destruction
Matthew 12:25
Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand."
In 1858, Abraham Lincoln spoke these words, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." And as I see it, that biblical quote is very timely for the American people today as well. For Lincoln it became a call to war, a righteous war, but a civil war just the same. What it all really boiled down to is division. The Bible says that the root of all division is sin (see Jude 1:16-19, James 4:1-3). In the case of the 19th century Americans, it was a battle between a true love for the rights of all men and a desire to uphold a corrupt system of socioeconomic structures that only benefited some. In the times that Jesus said the words recorded in Matthew 12, the divisions were not all that different.
Jesus challenged the political and religious authority of the Pharisees simply by being what they were not, or what they would not be.
Let's take another look into the situation we studied in our previous devotion. Jesus, right in front of the Pharisees, had just healed the crippled hand of one man and cast out the demon of another who was both deaf and dumb. And in a perfect world, you'd think that these religious leaders would celebrate the obvious coming of the long sought after Messiah. But they didn't. Instead, they argued about the Sabbath and how he and his disciples were not adhering to their over regulated Sabbath rituals. Which, by the way, were convenient for them and illogical for most anyone else. I mean some of their rules were just plain stupid. For instance, on the Sabbath, you could not carry anything in your hands or arms or on your shoulders, but you could use the back of your hands. Literally a backhanded workaround. And women were allowed to keep the girdles tied up with a knot (for good reason) but men could not tie a knot on the Sabbath. And so, if you needed a bucket of water from the well a man could not tie a rope to the bucket and get some, but a woman could tie the bucket to her girdle and then get some. I mean seriously, how stupid is this?
And so, while they're whitewashing their tombs, they don't recognize the glory of God at work right in front of them, and they go so far as to attribute these miracles to the work of the lord of flies. Where was the Lord’s influence in the lives of these religious leaders? How could they see God’s own Son but not recognize him?
Why?
They have no love in them. No love for God or for his people.
They have the responsibility, by virtue of their social station, to heal the sick and cast out demons. And yet here in their midst are both afflicted, and demon possessed people. What happened? Were they about to get around to it? Maybe they had an appointment to help these men, but Jesus interfered with the schedule?
No.
I think these afflicted people couldn't make the offering price. They didn't have the temple tax. They weren't worthy of the Pharisees attention. And here comes Jesus Messiah, healing and exorcising anybody without a fee.
And Jesus comes with a radical new plan and no charge for his services that flew in the face of their religious systems for exercising justice and mercy.
“For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings”
(Hosea 6:6).
Add to that radical idea Jesus offers a new plan for determining the value of a ministry and its ministers.
“Pay attention to what you hear: with the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you”
(Mark 4:24).
Jesus lays a heavy burden on the Pharisees backs who were experts at laying down heavy burdens on the people who served them. And there's the thing, these Pharisees were supposed to be the servants of the people, they were supposed to be watching over their souls, but instead they forced others to serve them.
So, here comes the Messiah and he's tearing down all their religious barriers to heaven and on earth in all the actions of his disciples and himself. And the holier-than-thou are murmuring and thinking murderous thoughts.
“Knowing their thoughts, he said to them..."
In effect he said to them that they're headed on the road to destruction. In fact they've already gone far beyond the point of no return, because they've blasphemed the works of the Holy Spirit. They made their choice and their choice has made them. And even if they had made no decision, they still have made a choice, as the song says (hat tip to RUSH).
So, what's the good news? Is there any good news in all this?
ABSOLUTELY!
It's really simple.
Just do what they wouldn't do.
Be what they refused to be.
Go where they refused to go.
Live like they refused to live.
Live and love for God.
Live by these two rules:
1. Love God and love your neighbor as you love yourself.
2. Be unified with others in Christ and through Christ be the church. Live according to His instructions, by His example, and with the help of the Holy Spirit, be the difference you want.
If you do this, you will succeed where the Pharisees failed. And know that Jesus has already prayed for you and for all that you do in Him.
John 17:22-23
"I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one- I in them and you in me-so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me."
Go and preach the good news and God bless you now and every day.
