Matthew 6:21
"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
Salvation is not a reward, it's a gift given to those who believe and obey His Son Jesus.
Are there also opportunities given and responsibilities for acting upon those opportunities?
Yes.
And there's a right and wrong source for us to draw upon when acting upon our responsibilities. There's treasures stored up on earth, and a body filled with the light of heaven, light and darkness. The source of your rewards comes from the Creator, or the creation. And no one is capable of serving both. Not even the Son of Man was willing to try and pull that one off.
Jesus made this kingdom dependency principle very clear. Not motivated by pressure or duty, but rather by an attitude of love and affection, a true desire to please God. He doesn't want you to gripe about it, and he doesn't want you to worry about it.
Whatever you can give...give.
He doesn't want it unless you want to give it.
Just do it for your own good, the good that comes from joyful giving. You can't out give God, and you can't earn your reward anyhow. Let it be with simplicity motivated by your love for God. Just store it up in his hands and let him multiply the blessings in the way he sees fit.
You see, these material things and the spiritual practices and duties, in and of themselves, offer no real security since the circumstances of the world at large can destroy or rob them from you. Do you remember when the COVID19 pandemic (whatever you think the source of that was) and the futility it caused? Remember how the churches closed their doors? Remember how the world subjected everyone to limitations in services and safety? In an instant the world robbed every one of their spiritual freedoms, and for many they were robbed of all their material security as well.
Do you recall your spiritual reaction to those times? How did you respond in the persecution? How did your neighbors and communities respond?
Jesus wants us to understand the the quality of our personal character (the heart) is determined by the object of our commitment and devotion. Our spiritual and worldly characteristics should be aligned with the Holy Spirit, no matter the circumstances. A divided allegiance between God and our material resources is doomed to failure; it can lead to self-deception and possibly spiritual death when we end up despising God.
Matthew 6:24
“No one can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be..."
Christian friends,
Imagine hating God?
Can you?
I know I can't even entertain the idea, but I know people who do, or at least it seems as if they've got no great love for Him. But look again at verse 24. It's not just that Jesus says we should love God and not love money. He's telling us that we will EITHER love God or hate God. What determines our state is where we store up our treasures. Jesus doesn't suggest there's some middle ground for compromise.
But Jesus doesn't just leave us there with this love hate conundrum. He then goes on to say that our anxiety about our worldly securities can be just as destructive as the sin of greed.
Why?
Why is a little worry a spiritual problem?
Jesus again makes it plain. Anxiety about the day to day needs of our life stems from little faith. And it's from within that little faith situation where we find the enemy creeping in. Like a bad dream, at times like a nightmare really. Believe me, I've been there. Too many times. It's the devil's opportunity. And Jesus wants us to shut the door on that lying demon. He doesn't want us to give him a minute of our time. In fact, Jesus wants us to store up all that heavenly treasure for the times such as these. That's why we store it up. That's why we pray. That's why we fast, and give our hearts and souls for the kingdom of God. For the times when the world comes into our lives and tries to rob us of our spirit. So that our faith ISN'T LITTLE in those moments. We keep the light of our eyes, our heavenly vision, filled with oil (The Holy Spirit), so that we are ready. Freed from all anxiety regarding the future because we've invested ourselves in the work of God in the world. No room for compromise. No room for doubts. No home for the enemy to live.
Ready for what?
Ready for the reward. For the blessings that God has stored up for you. The everlasting life that comes from faith. And the assurance in this life that comes from faithfulness (great faith).
Matthew 6:33-34
"Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
Your love and affection for Christ motivates you today, tomorrow, and every day. Your hope is in him and it's so important to you that you cannot imagine ever hating him. This hope and faith filled love is your reward. Love perfected by faith.
1 John 3:3
"And all who have this eager expectation will keep themselves pure, just as he is pure."
