The Sovereign Lord is my strength
Habakkuk 3:16-19
"I will wait quietly for the coming day when disaster will strike the people who invade us. Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, yet I will rejoice in the Lord! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation! The Sovereign Lord is my strength!"
I've been through total economic ruin. I've faced desperate circumstances. And even while going through those trials I've spiritually matured enough to allow that adversity to strengthen my trust and dependence on God. Not in spite of my misfortune, but because of it, I exult in ‘the god of our salvation’. In the trouble I realize, even God's judgments are merciful. And through that experience I grow in understanding. Moreover I see that the just must live by faith no matter the situation.
Habakkuk began his prophecy with questions and ends with a song, with praise and commitment in the One True God. It's a prelude to heaven. In heaven there shall be no more trouble, only everlasting triumphs. Good hope through grace is founded in a holy fear. And the just must live by that hope if they hope to find their joy.
Habakkuk saw into the future and what it holds for the church. And he trembled. He saw diversity but no unity. He saw a pluralistic people governed by relativity. He saw the church bowing down to gods made by human hands. A people without any absolute understanding of the Holyiness of God, these fools are made drunk by their wicked masters. They drink from their false cups. And their masters scoff at their ignorance. They sow so much confusion that everything becomes relative. No ultimate stable definition of the divine power of the Sovereign Lord. They have a lot of particulars, but with no particular value. They have many purposes, but no purpose. They have a multitude of truths but no truthfulness. They have beauty, but no substance, it's barely skin deep. Their faith has no integrity. And Habakkuk trembled at his vision into this age. Imagine that, he trembled in fear at the thought of it.
And yet we live it daily.
Habakkuk is a great example for our age. He was facing the Babylonian horde and the absolute destruction of his people. These marauders were evil personified. Their master craft is terror. And he questions God for allowing this to happen.
After a while he works through the problem. He's seeing everything clearly now. He understands the consequences of sin and the justice in bringing judgment upon the people. And he even sees how great the destruction can become in the times yet to come. Finally he comes to a realization, a moment of ultimate peace. He resolves to delight and triumph in God notwithstanding. He makes the perfect choice, he worships the Sovereign Lord.
He could have responded in many different ways and still not be wrong, but he chose the perfect response. As we read Habakkuk's story we learn about the principal ground of our joy in God. We learn that God is indeed our salvation. And as we go through our trials and tribulations we are blessed because we now know that He that is the God of our salvation in the heavenly realms, will be our strength in this world. Not by bread alone, but by strength of heart in the spiritual warfare that we all must one day face.
Habakkuk likens this strength to a fleet footed deer able to out run the dangers. God makes us to walk upon high places. And he hears our prayers there, and he brings ease to our hearts. And we sing a new song.
