"After this, I will pour out my Spirit on all kinds of people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions.” ~ Joel 2:28
Among my most favorite Sci-fi movies is the 1984 classic, 2010. I think for me it holds some very deep meaning, especially in the spiritual sense. I can’t help but notice the somewhat obvious messianic undertones especially when one of the main characters, HAL-9000 (the on-board computer) is speaking with the spirit-like voice of Dave Bowman who had been presumed lost in space in the previous movie, 2001 a space odyssey and who has now returned to usher in the coming rebirth of everything. Like HAL, I need to know what’s going on to commit myself to its coming challenges.
HAL-9000 – “What’s going to happen?”
DAVE – “Something wonderful.”
HAL-9000 – “I’m afraid.”
DAVE – “Don’t be, we’ll be together.”
HAL-9000 – “Where will we be?”
DAVE – “Where I am now.”
I think I’ve always been attracted to these kinds of stories and for much of my life it has never occurred to me to ask why. It wasn’t until I accepted God’s role in my life, or for that matter accepted how little my role plays in my own life, that I finally began to appreciate what it was that he was doing in me. What resulted from that for me was the beginning of understanding. I came to understand that the Lord had developed his means for grace so that those whom he has called might survive the current and coming darkness.
Jesus did send his Spirit, like a full stream he did pour it out like an unrestrained expression, like an outburst. Something wonderful did happen and nothing was ever the same again. In the movie, that wonderful something was very tangible. The planet Jupiter becomes a star and all its moons become new planets for mankind to exploit, all but one. In prophecy we’re told to expect something wonderful. In the book of Acts chapter 2 we’re told something wonderful did happen and that something has become a new reality. It wasn’t new worlds to explore, what had been transformed was humanity itself and it had been changed forever. Before Joel’s prophecy had been fulfilled at Pentecost divine revelation was confined to the descendents of Abraham and further limited to certain classes of people therein. On the backside of Pentecost everyone is now a potential conduit for the influences of the Holy Spirit. His extraordinary gifts do not reside solely within the rich, the wise or the valiant but are made available to even the least among us for the benefit of His church. No matter their age, social status, gender or generation, the universal nature of human/God relations has forever changed for those who call upon the name of righteousness.
In these last days there will be wonders indeed and for those who call upon His name, those who choose the things from above and leave behind what is below, there is a promise of deliverance.
ME - What is going to happen?
JESUS - I am going to make something wondrously happen within you by the power of my Spirit (Acts 2:19)
ME – I’m afraid.
JESUS - Don’t be, take heart, it is I, do not be afraid (Matthew 14:27) let not your hearts be troubled (John 14:27) I will ask the Father and he will give you another helper and he will be with you forever (John 14:16) I am with you always till the end of the age (Matthew 28:20).
ME - Where will we be?
JESUS - You will be with me in paradise (Luke 23:43)
Something wonderful did happened. And is happening. And the people do experience dreams and visions, revelations, and inspirations. A light has come to pierce the darkness. And in my mind and in my heart, I can feel the wonder and joy like Dave did when he sent his last transmission, “My God, it’s full of stars!”
I look at the grace of God, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and I think, My God it’s full of grace!
