Mark 4:37-40
"A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?”
Just as Jesus had previously spoke too and silenced the demonic evil spirits, in this gospel story Jesus calms the storming waters. It's not lost on me that he does this in exactly the same manner. And it wouldn't be far fetched to conclude from this that the storm had chaotic demonic origins. So not only didn't the disciples miss the reality of who Jesus is, they can't see the demons for the storm. They missed the point. That being, chaos will come at you, there will be no peace coming at you from the world, it belongs to Satan. They will persist, because they are driven by evil spirits.
Think about this in the context of what we see all around us today. What I would call "pure evil" lives in the hearts, minds, and actions of so many. In the same way that the gospel says God expects ALL your heart, mind, spirit, and strength; the Devil expects his captive souls to be pure evil, all of it, the mind, the heart, and their lifestyle. And so today we see this conflict between two churches; the world and its demonically influenced purely evil patrons, and Christ's bridesmaids Spirit empowered, prepared, filled, and ready for the bridegroom's coming.
In-between is the world of chaotic superstitious faiths and lack of faiths, or no faith at all. These in-between people are the lost ones. They fear, they loose hope, they challenge Jesus for not being clear and present in the ways they demand.
Sometimes when the church is in a storm, Christ seems as if he were asleep, unconcerned with the troubles of his people. To the in-betweens Jesus is asleep at the wheel. They probably "tried" that faith thing before. They got in the car, they started out strong. Riding shotgun they praised "Jesus take the wheel!", and then the storms came. The road got dark and slippery, and they looked over at the drivers seat and Jesus was asleep. Regardless of their prayers, trouble keeps coming. Now the prayers have changed from hope to fear and ultimately regrets.
The prayers of many always follow a pattern.
First they pray strong..."God take this affliction away in your Son's name we name it and claim it!"
And the storm continues.
Then they pray comforts..."your will be done Lord, we are assured, we have faith that you will make good come from this, for Jesus' sake".
And they look and see Jesus is asleep in the midst of the storm.
Then they pray..."Where were you Lord?" "Don't you care Lord?" "DO SOMETHING!" "I hate you!" "I'll do it myself."
And the Lord responds, he is awaked by the prayers of his people. And he speaks...He says, Peace, be still—Siopa, pephimoso—be silent!
Did he shout it?
Maybe he was just a whisper.
Was he commanding the waves to be silent or the disciples?
Maybe both.
And then he instructs...Why are you fearful? Here, Why are you so fearful? Where is your faith? I heard your prayers, where was the faith in them? You called upon my name, but in your hearts and minds? No faith. You told me to take control, and then you lost control. You praise and worship me, the Creator of all things, but then those "things" frighten you, as if I do not command and control all things.
"Do you still have no faith?”
Well? Do you?
Child of God...make up your mind.
The world today is filled with plenty of atheists and pagans worshipping themselves and every crawling thing on earth. They don't need your company. Stop listening to them and following them. They mock Jesus and his followers. They are literally speaking Pridefully about their religion of proclivities. We've even recently seen their demonic thoughts spill out of them as "news" commentators on MSNBC's Joy Reid show laughed and mocked about a report of illegal aliens raping and killing 12 year old Jocelyn Nungaray in the bayou. The young girl was strangled to death by illegal aliens and these perverted minds tripped over themselves about political semantics and laughed while doing it. The world is filled with these people, chaotic, demonic creatures. They don't need your help, compliance, concern, or silence.
The world needs bold genuine faith, your faith. Not the faith Jesus saw on display in the storm. The world needs faithful disciples going, searching, shining the light of the gospel outside the doors of the sanctuary on Sunday morning. Prayers and concerns are great, but look at the pattern I discussed earlier. The world needs more than lip service operating somewhere in-between faith and superstition. They've got plenty of that already. They don't need a game of musical chairs between various church-clubs and traditions. They need genuine faith founded upon the true word of God. Faith in Christ's word.
Pray instead for greater faith.
Pray instead for a closer walk with Jesus.
Don't pray "Jesus do something", pray that Jesus does something through you every day.
And don't let anything get in-between you and that faith.
Go and be with the in-betweens.
Food for thought:
One in-between situation is a home's threshold, the front door. Be the threshold for those who have not yet completely been mastered by the demons. Be that door and threshold that Christ is knocking on.
What's the most important verse in the Bible that every Christian needs to know, understand, and take to heart?
It's not John 3:16, or any number of the gospel jewels, it from the beginning, when God is speaking to the Devil about Christ and his church. Everything that follows, the entire Bible and church history is about this one verse.
Genesis 3:15
"I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
