The Hearts And Minds Of The Natural Man
Daniel 6:5
So they concluded, “Our only chance of finding grounds for accusing Daniel will be in connection with the rules of his religion.”
The wicked men who served King Darius were envious of Daniel's position, and his great wisdom, and the confidence he had in his God's power to keep him. The schemed and plotted to destroy him. They could have sent an assassin. Maybe poison his food. There are any number of ways that they might bring him down. But they directed their attention towards his faith. More than destroying the man's reputation, these wicked men wanted to destroy his religion. They tried and failed, and later became lion food themselves, they and their families.
In every religious organization, and for that matter every organization of mankind, there is a natural tendency for some people, those who practice evils, to try and dissolve the power of God's wisdom and blessings. They practice wicked things in order to drag down the word of God before all men. Finding fault where they can. Wicked wolves, administrators, officials, high officers, advisers, and governors, all coming in sheep's clothing. And they devise their plans for eroding the power of God's authority among the organizations.
This is the way of the world they say. The way of the natural man.
What is the natural man? What does the Bible have to say about that?
The Bible tells us that the "natural man" does not seek God.
Psalm 14:2-3
The Lord looks down from heaven
on the entire human race;
he looks to see if anyone is truly wise,
if anyone seeks God.
But no, all have turned away;
all have become corrupt.
No one does good,
not a single one!
Even Jesus said, “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them” (John 6:44). Fact of the matter is, every good thing originates with God (James 1:17). We seek our own fulfillment. We seek our desires and pleasure. We seek escape from pain and relief from suffering. But the pure motivation of seeking after God for Himself is a gift that only comes from God. No one wakes up one day and, on his own, decides to seek after God, or exercise their faith through human insight and instinct.
Truth is even with the knowledge of God’s existence everywhere to be discovered, people naturally choose to “suppress the truth by their wickedness” (Romans 1:18–20). That's the natural state of things. The so called "natural man".
If no one seeks God, who are the “seekers” that some churches strategize to attract?
At any rate, the prophet Daniel sees a vision about the world of these wicked natural men in Daniel chapter seven. He sees four huge beasts. Beasts like a lion, a bear, a leopard, and an iron toothed monster with ten obvious horns and one small hidden horn. And this beast devours and crushes its victims.
What are these creatures represented of?
A heavenly being told Daniel that they represented four kingdoms that were different from the one belonging to the saints (the true worshipers of God). They were falsehoods, false religious organizations, the nations of the natural man, and their culturally progressive institutions. And the eleven horns fought against the saints. Which historical nations and kings are represented by these beasts is not ultimately important. They are all "the natural man" not seeking after God's will but instead seeking the destruction of His kingdom on earth. They serve kingdoms indeed; the Egyptian and Arab worlds, the Roman Empire, the Syrians and Persians, the Grecian Empire, the Russians, the Roman Catholic Church, The European Union, the Communist Party, and more upon more. The whole damned world of the natural man. All of it has and is continuing to come up against the kingdom of God on earth. One thing they all seem to have in common is each one of the empires mentioned in Daniel's vision had a geographical connection to the Mediterranean Sea. This is likely a metaphor, the sea is sometimes used as a picture of all the Gentile nations who come against Israel from across the sea. The four winds are suggested as satanic forces. Whoever their leader may be, they were and are, even in this age, trying to destroy the bride of Christ.
And the good news is, the Ancient of Days (God himself), will come in judgement upon them all. Fierce hot judgment. Something lava-like in a stream of fire pours out from His throne; it was like a river of vast destructive power (Isaiah 66:15-16). And a thousand thousands are going to be ministering to Him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him in judgment. And the Son of Man comes and exercises dominion over the earth. The final human dictator we commonly call the Antichrist is crushed. Jesus sets up His kingdom, the empire of the Antichrist is completely crushed, yet some natural-man nations continue even into the Millennium age. Even faced with the kingdom of the holy One, these natural men will resist seeking his love. This spirit of wickedness seems to be perennial until Christ finally removes Satan completely from the scene.
In the meantime, Satan persists. He's wearing on and wearing out the church. He harasses. He accuses. It can be overwhelming at times. His continual and protracted pressure effectively breaks down the human spirit, worse than any single moment of crisis that calls for a heroic decision. And it is because of this constant pressure that the word of God encourages us...
Keep Your Faith
"Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him."
James 1:12
Remain steadfast, keep watch over your faith. Because the enemy is seeking you, he's not seeking God, he's seeking to devour you. He is the god of the natural-man. And it's only natural that he wants you to follow him.
Keep watch. Stand watch. And receive life.
