Are you stimulated into serving GOD because you love Him, or does some other stimulant motivate you?
I find Ezekiel chapter forty four filled with amazingly telling instructions for those who serve God. Filled with tells about human nature and religion relationships. Verses seventeen through nineteen are really interesting.
Ezekiel 44:17-19 “When they enter the gateway to the inner courtyard, they must wear only linen clothing. They must wear no wool while on duty in the inner courtyard or in the Temple itself. They must wear linen turbans and linen undergarments. They must not wear anything that would cause them to perspire. When they return to the outer courtyard where the people are, they must take off the clothes they wear while ministering to me. They must leave them in the sacred rooms and put on other clothes so they do not endanger anyone by transmitting holiness to them through this clothing."
HOLY UNDERWEAR?
I guess you could call these things the "holy underwear". Apparently God doesn't want the priests to break a sweat. I wonder if we could make applications to any mission work and workers. Maybe in this way. It seems that God is attempting to prevent fabricated worship and offerings. Literally utilizing fabric to prevent fabrication. And even to the point of requiring them to take off their holy underwear before exposing themselves to the congregation.
Think about this in the context of what we know about human nature. The priests have just spent time in the holy presence of The Lord. And imagine now they exit there and begin to mingle with the people. The natural human response would no doubt be many people trying to touch the holiness infused garments. They would be caught up in the excitement and spectacle of it all. It would be a fabricated charismatic situation. Energetic fans of the holy one caught up in the charisma.
Think back to when Moses came down from the mountain and the presence of God. Moses covered his face so that the people would not see his face still aglow with that presence.
I think when we take the whole context of the chapter into consideration we can see a theme developing, even as we get into chapter forty five. God makes all these comments and requires all this precision in temple building and culture for a very good reason. He understands what motivates religious people and where things can go very wrong very quickly. God wants worship in Spirit and truth. Worship motivated by love for God. Genuine love not fabricated enthusiasm. He's not a genie. He doesn't require his lamp get rubbed. He wants lamps filled with his Holy Spirit, and reflecting the true light of God's grace, not by any artificial light.
What I take away from this:
I heard about a church community that had a committee meeting, (LOL, isn't that all they do?), and in the meeting the church leaders determined to allow ALL the church's programs to die a natural death. Die or live, but not by any fabrication. The programs would continue under their own steam, and if it thrived it continues, and if not it would fade away. In this way they attempted to allow the Holy Spirit to nurture and inspire, or reorganize and recreate. Live or die, they didn't want to artificially sustain any legacy missions that were no longer serving The Holy One.
I would love to be a part of that church movement, a "movement" that isn't relying upon human beings and all their charismatic leaders, but instead following Christ's Spirit and his leadership. Intentional but free from any form of human ingenuity and influence. A better motive.
"Their decisions must be based on my regulations. And the priests themselves must obey my instructions" (Ezekiel 44:24)
What motivates the service must come from a desire to serve God's will according to God's instructions. Not for some social justice cause, or governmental reforms. Not for some family legacy. And not for the good old, "this is the way we've always done things". But for the love of God.
And especially no false pretense. That's the whole point. God hates false gods and fake worship. He doesn't want a prefab greeting card worship. And he doesn't need your offering if it's not from the heart.
