You Are What You're Willing To Eat
‘The fathers eat sour grapes,
and the children’s teeth are set on edge’
Suppose you've got this righteous man. He does what's right in the sight of God. He doesn't take part in the idolatry of the age. He's not envious or committing adulterous things. He isn't doing business that forsakes the people or oppresses the debtors. He's not a thief. He's just, and he keeps all the law. And yet he has a son who is doing all these things. Is the father at fault for the wickedness his son has done?
And what if this wicked son has a son who is not like him, he keeps the commandments and does what is just and righteous? Is this son guilty of the sins of his father?
Every man answers for himself.
Ezekiel 18:18 “As for his father, he will die for his own iniquity because he practiced fraud, robbed his brother, and did among his people what was not good."
(vs 20) "The person who sins is the one who will die."
And yet it's even worse for the one who knows righteousness, but turns from doing what is good and follows after his lusts, or takes part in others wickedness...
(vs 24) "But when a righteous person turns from his righteousness and acts unjustly, committing the same detestable acts that the wicked do, will he live? None of the righteous acts he did will be remembered. He will die because of the treachery he has engaged in and the sin he has committed."
He will judge each person according to his own ways. This is the way of the world and the way of God's justice before Christ Jesus.
Christ Jesus brings redemption for all who surrender their ways to him, follow after him, and seek, looking for access to, his justice (peace).
Now all those who look for that route to salvation from sin seek Jesus' way by prayers in the spirit, and by discovering the truth Jesus shared in his gospel word, and by the fruit of being found in acts of service to his people. In this way Christ sanctifies his children. He nurishes them in this way. He cherishes them in this way. And he loves them eternally. It's a mystical union between the bridegroom and his bride. It's the gift of faith and rooted in grace.
It's an intimate bond. It's a covenant arrangement. It's a blending of the earthly and the spiritual. And it's the only access available to the world that cannot escape the judgment under its own power.
You want to take your chances? Maybe your righteousness will pass the test? You really trust that your spiritual food has always been clean?
John 8:7
“He who is without [any] sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”
Be sure that all your self righteous deeds don't end up being vomited back up at you when you face absolute purity in the judgment.
Jesus said:
"what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person."
Matthew 15:18-20
