Not the "wicked", not an "idolatrous" person, not one of the ignorant "fools" who deny and reject God. Just one of the saints living under the perceived burden of his own sins.
Psalm 51:5 Indeed, I was guilty when I was born; I was sinful when my mother conceived me.
Is it just whining to ask God to create in me a clean heart and spirit that remains steadfast in Him? Am I just a whiner, begging God to not send me away from his presence, or take His Holy Spirit from me?
What am I?
A sinner. Father have mercy.
God replies:
This is what the Lord has to say about that:
“Maintain justice and do what is right, for my salvation is close at hand and my righteousness will soon be revealed."
(Isaiah 56:1)
The Father only asks of us that we do the right thing, and "maintain justice". Taking no advantage in order to protect or gain advantages. He wants us to...
Micah 6:8
Mankind, he has told each of you what is good and what it is the Lord requires of you:
to act justly, to love faithfulness, and to walk humbly with your God.
...keep the sabbath. Its an ordinance given to maintain a perpetual relationship with God. A time to rest in The Lord. Not a day of recreation, but a day of re-creation. Whatever day it is, its sanctified in prayer. Its just an ordinance that asks of the human beings to meet with and rest in God's will and mercy. No hustle. No work. In fact God doesn't lay it down as a law but really just asks of his creations, "where have I failed you that you haven't found the time and energy to come rest with me?"
God pleads with us to remember his faithfulness. And he asks us to be kind, merciful, and compassionate to all. He says we're to act justly, to not sin against others in order to gain advantages. He says we should love faithfulness so that our word gives honor and glory to Him. And finally he asks us to walk with him, humbly. Humility before God begins with recognizing His supremacy and our own limitations. Walking humbly with God means we should be living in a grafted in relationship with Him, recognizing His lordship and our own sinful limitations. Humbly seeking to follow His will rather than our own pride or desires, and serving others through acts of justice, mercy and love.
I think if we're busy doing these things, we will better ward off our sinful manners. Developing humility requires honesty. We need to be honest with ourselves. The sin of pride creates a hidden room in our spirit where we hide our sins. Pride in our heart leaves no room for God. It squeezes humble obedience and heartfelt worship right out of our lives. And so we need to teach our spirit to repent and release the hidden sins. To take off the masks and set ourselves free. To release our prayers from the den of theives we've created in our spirit.
So is David just a whiner?
No.
He's a sincere sinner who knows how to make room for God in his heart.
As Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”
Walking humbly with God inevitably involves confessing our sins honestly when we stumble. Rather than hiding faults out of pride, humility helps us acknowledge struggles openly to God and trusted believers who can support us.
Confess and be free.
