What's the situation?
The community of faith is ignoring the Lord's instruction.
"Cursed is the person who trusts in mankind.
He makes human flesh his strength,
and his heart turns from the Lord. He will be like a juniper in the Arabah;
he cannot see when good comes
but dwells in the parched places in the wilderness..." Jeremiah 17:5-6
"The person whose confidence is in The Lord is blessed. He will be like a tree planted by water..." Jeremiah 17:7-8
All who abandon The Lord will become ashamed for they've abandoned the fountain of living water.
Today the religious will persecute or attempt to ignore you for reminding the people about keeping God's commandments. They'll take the Lord's word and tell you, "judge not...".
In reply I say, Jesus told us, "Stop judging according to outward appearances; rather judge according to righteous judgment.” John 7:24
Q: What is righteous judgment?
A: By submitting to God in faith and seeking to understand His Word.
If you want to live in the promise, keep your eyes on Jesus and his instructions. Not on people and their misguided opinions. Look to Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith. You have to cross over the river (through the troubled challenging waters) in order to reach the promise. And the bridge is The Lord Jesus Christ. He is the One who bridges the gap. And your faith in him will make the way. That faith is our hope in the unseen promises. We don't know whats coming but we trust with our hearts in its promise even though with our minds we might doubt. Faith is in part humility.
Jesus’ words should humble us, as we recognize that we are capable of distorting and misapplying God’s commands due to our own pride and self-righteousness.
We live in an age when the protestation is Matthew 7:1 (‘Do not judge, or you too will be judged’) and there is wisdom in that admonition. And by contrast, John 7:24 demands a judgement that uses a moral and theological discernment in the context of obedient faith. In Matthew 7:1 Jesus is speaking to the heresy hunters. He's addressing a crowd of people who saw themselves as morally and spiritually superior fundamentalists.
So here's the rub...these heresy hunters, from their perspective, were making judgments according to the OT commandments, or so they believed. But what they misunderstood was their acts were guided by the interests and values of the men who had interpreted the OT principles in such a way as to justify horrible cultural behaviors in the name of God. And so it's true that Jesus' disciples must not assume a condemnatory spirit toward others, instead they should employ discernment in their judgments. Look for the righteousness of God in the decision-making. Seek His love and the guidance of His Spirit, and his wisdom will open up doors of understanding.
Again...Jesus is the bridge.
He is the path.
Christ leads to righteousness.
Cling to Him and you're not going to lose your way.
