The gods, honest truth - One True Path
Matthew 7:13-15 Jesus on the right path
Jesus said:
" There are two paths before you; you may take only one path."
Jesus just finished up his "Sermon on the Mount" and was using graphic warnings to instruct his listeners, he cautioned them to take what he was saying seriously because to fail in that would result in disastrous consequences for them.
He continued:
"One doorway is narrow. And one door is wide. Go through the narrow door."
The narrow road is difficult to find. And Jesus warned of the possibility of being led astray. He warned about getting confused traveling along deceptive paths. To find and follow the narrow path, one must turn away from the crowd—sometimes even leaving friends and family to do it.
He goes on to say:
"For the wide door leads to a wide path, and the wide path is broad; the wide, broad path is easy, and the wide, broad, easy path has many, many people on it; but the wide, broad, easy, crowded path leads to death."
Jesus is saying that one can be a disciple while persisting in sin; and that it's not enough to simply hear the teaching of Jesus, without putting his teaching into practice. His teaching leads to the narrow path. And unfortunately most folks never manage to find it. These Christians either choose the narrow gospel road, or they are not Christian.
And than Jesus concludes by saying:
"Now then that narrow door leads to a narrow road that in turn leads to life. It is hard to find that road. Not many people manage it. Along the way, watch out for false prophets. They will come to you in sheep’s clothing, but underneath that quaint and innocent wool, they are hungry wolves."
The allure of the broadway is great and many travel it. In life, people typically take the path of least resistance. It's wide after all with plenty of wiggle room and an abundance of Christian liberty. The broad way is popular and tempting. Those who don’t follow it are considered strange, are often persecuted, marginalized and cancelled.
How does one find the narrow road?
The answer is mingled within Jesus' sermon on the Mount. There are two Beatitudes that make up the entry posts framing the narrow gateway. On one side is the post, poor in spirit (Matthew 5:3). One must come before God accepting one's spiritual bankruptcy, and desperate need for God. On the other side is the post, mourning over sin (Matthew 5:4). Again in desperation, because the person is far from being right with God, he mourns his loathsome state. To enter this narrow path, we must make a deliberate choice. We must, in faith, accept that we are sinners. It's faith that sets things apart.
It's faith that saves.
Faith in what?
Did you know that there's power in the name of Jesus Christ?
Yes, the power to heal.
Yes, the power and authority to forgive.
Yes, the power to restore.
Yes, the power to defeat the Devil.
Yes, the power to bless and comfort.
Yes, the power to raise the dead.
But did you know there's power in the name of Jesus to get you killed?
In the book of Acts chapters 6 and 7 you'll see how the apostle Stephan is stoned to death for refusing to stop invoking the name of Jesus and for sharing his faith in Christ.
This is a trend in the gospels . In every age there has been persecutions by the cultures and religious ruling classes, just for mentioning Jesus. Not for loving one another. Not for affirming one another's sinful choices. Not because someone was welcoming and giving. None of the early followers of Christ Jesus were stoned to death, crucified, put to the sword, or imprisoned because they prayed for somebody. They paid for their faith in blood simply for speaking the name of Jesus.
The same goes for Jesus himself. He wasn't killed because he loved someone as the father loved him. Jesus didn't get scourged because he fed the masses. It wasn't because he spoke a sermon, healed a Leper, or gave sight to a blind man. It was because he claimed to be the Son of God.
John 8:58
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
Friends, the broad way to hell, built by the Devil, is paved with good intentions they say. And all those good intentions, without the powerful name of Jesus, won't get you through the narrow gate. That's all the Devil wants, getting folks to leave off that powerful name and all his glorious authority.
There's so many challenges facing Christ's disciples in this multicultural ecumenical world. Take, for instance, the challenge facing followers of Jesus. Someone who is talking about the hope you can find in Jesus to a Muslim person of faith. Especially when so much of the conversation is laced with suggestions that both the Christian and Muslim faith, share equal reverence for the same God, and even for Jesus.
Without getting too deep into the weeds, what I really want to say on that is, we really can't have common ground between these two faith practices. Not and be expressing truth. So you see the Muslim faith will claim to have a great respect for Jesus (as a prophet), but they just don't see him as the son of God. But that's a false narrative, right from the start, and here's why.
Let's say a Muslim is correct, and I am wrong in thinking that Jesus is the son of God. And let's say the Muslim is still correct and they say they believe he is one of the prophets. all these things are false, they're broad ways of deception. Because they can't possibly be true. The test to prove a prophet to be true, is that whatever he says must be true or proven true. And Jesus as I showed earlier, and in other instances throughout the gospel made the claim that he was the son of God. He claimed that no one came to the father, but through him. He claimed that he was the Truevine, the living bread, the son of man. So if he is truly just a prophet, then the things I just said that he said about himself would mean that he is a liar. And being a liar, he could not be a prophet. And so, if he is not, as I say, king of the universe, and he's not a prophet as the Muslims claim, then he's a liar, and no one should be worshiping his name.
There is no common ground, no common spiritual claim between the religions. Jesus never claimed to be anything other than the son of God. And that's the gods, honest truth.
Why does it matter Mike? Why not just coexist.
Good question. Does it matter to you who you follow as king of the universe? Does it matter to you who you offer a Prayers to? Does it matter to you and who's name you hope for salvation?
Maybe it doesn't matter all that much. I mean the Gods, they're so similar in their origins. maybe there's some hidden mystery to these Abrahamic faith practices.
This is what Jesus was talking about when he said, there are two paths. And I just want to say that again, it was Jesus that warned us about this. It wasn't me I didn't write this. In that same gospel, that so many people love where Jesus spoke what we called the beatitudes, he followed immediately with the word of warning against false paths. No way did he suggest coexistence. And yet somehow, in our enlightened age, we have insisted upon it.
OK so one last time.
Jesus said before Abraham was, I am.
The Muslim faith unequivocally rejects that claim that Jesus made about himself. There's no coexistence from their perspective. So either Jesus was a liar, and he's just a prophet as far as they're concerned, who is not a profit because he's a liar, or he is the king of the Universe.
I choose the path that leads to Jesus Christ King of the universe. No other paths. No byways, no alternatives. And I made that choice because to do otherwise would be to make me a worshipper of a liar who called himself the son of God. And what a terrible, wretched fool that would make of me.
Out there on the paths, things are always going to doubtful. It's always going to be uncertain. And just like Abraham did, most of us are going to try and make a way of our own as we grow impatient with waiting on God and his way. So it's understandable that there are false prophets in many broad ways. At some point, I'm going to come to a split in the road and you're going to need to make a decision. Please choose wisely.
Bless you all
