Hypocrites and Humility -The Rise and Fall Of The Secular Church
Jesus warned:
“Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees—their hypocrisy."
Luke 12:1
Part One:
It's always going to be pride that blocks our successes. There's a just humbling that will come in the end for those who cannot rely upon The Lord. The making and the unmaking is accomplished by The Maker. There is no other byway around that truth.
Jesus said:
"All who make themselves great will be made humble, but those who make themselves humble will be made great.”
Luke 14:11
Humility trusts in God's unfailing love. Humility rejoices in making itself subject to his way. Pride and arrogance will not subject themselves to following in his footsteps. Pride will exalt itself. Humility will trust God to make its place for him in his kingdom.
In his own way Jesus commanded that we are to invite the outcast into his kingdom. From the beginning that gospel he preached was accepted by many, and immediately those who accepted that plan, and who followed in his ways, became the outcasts in the secular religious society. They were hunted. They were mocked. They were marginalized. His plan, his gospel, was never intended to create an outcome that blended his message into those cultural norms and practices of the secular society. He wasn't making for them a comfortable statement for all to see how being religious and socially acceptable makes you greater. It was baked into the cake that the disciples would be persecuted. The first (prideful) shall be last, the humble will be first. Pride - not a virtue in God's kingdom.
You've got to have your spiritual bags packed, you've got to be dressed and ready. You'd better have your spiritual loins girded in order to be ready for the day when the Maker comes and remakes everything. Dressed up without all the social distractions. Being assured and being motivated by the truth.
Jesus prophesied:
“I tell you the truth, everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, the Son of Man will also acknowledge in the presence of God’s angels. (That's the humble being exalted) But anyone who denies me here on earth will be denied before God’s angels. (That's the humbling) Anyone who speaks against the Son of Man can be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven." (That's the yeast doing it's work in the hearts of the prideful)
Luke 12:8-10 (emphasis mine)
The Holy Spirit teaches the disciple at that times when it becomes necessary. It's not something you can gin up or put on. When you're up against the social orders, the powers that be, and you're put on trial, you cannot rely upon your social status, your wealth, or your pride. Jesus said, "Life is not measured by what you possess.” (Luke 12:15) The humble will know what to say and do when the time comes.
Part Two: The Unfaithful Hypocrites
There is a divine trust being broken. The unfaithful professing Christians who want to have their places of honor under their own understanding, in the darkness, without the power of the light, know the knowledge of the truth, but reject it. God settles these accounts with His judgement. There is divine justice. The Maker makes sure to reward their unfaithfulness. That day has already been settled. The case is won. The trial is over, it is finished. There is only the sentencing phase left to be accomplished.
Who are these people? Who are the hypocrites?
They will act as if they serve God but will not have his power.
2 Timothy 3:5
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous, it does not brag, and IT IS NOT PROUD.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7
...because people will love themselves, love money, brag, and be proud. They will say evil things...
2 Timothy 3:2-4
They worm their way into the gathering through the lack of assurance of many. Some have lost the truth, some never agreed with it. Many struggle with humility to the Makers way. They go so far as to stand proudly against the truth. To spare themselves reproach they will put on the semblances of faith, but will at the same time deny and refuse to submit to the Makers divine power. They are destitute, faithless. The don't understand the shaping work of the Master shaper. They refuse His truth that asks for repentance, and set up for themselves places of honor within the congregations, but in their pride they honor themselves. The gospel becomes real and significant not when you're openly picking up trash along the road side for all to see, but when you're preparing the way for the Lord, making disciples, professing the Truth, cleaning up the trash truths that are littering the byways.
..always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.
2 Timothy 3:7
Conclusion:
At the end of the day you're not going to find the Spirit of God while celebrating with the prideful. Mislead teachers look for corners, they love the obscurity of the socially acceptable gospel. They're storing up social status for themselves. They're trying to win friendships and make a way without the drama of the divine justice. But they've never really understood that the relationship with God they sought, comes with his judgement. You can't have one without the other. The hypocrisy is that they reject the power of the One True God because they can't trust his judgments; judgments that don't align with their approved natural world traditions. The Makers way just doesn't seem right and natural for them. The world is made uncomfortable by his way. The wayside looks good and popular, and when they take it they can hold onto their places of honor. They can still give the impression of being in the in; without having to humble themselves in the eyes of The Lord and at the same time risk losing the trust of the congregation of natural people. Like changing the sabbath days, sacraments, and worship times, they work all spiritual matters for the comfort of the natural people. They know their audience and investors, and that's the relationship they nurture. The banquet is prepared for the offering of spiritual food, made from natural resources, complete with entertainment. The spiritual drama is being performed by spiritless secular monks.
Only Jesus can make a clear understanding available for the spiritually lost. This isn't something that can be fabulous, fantastical, and fabricated. The Truth is not a social media influencer. Social media can elicit fear, provoke anger, and fuel movements, but it cannot produce a Spiritual Awakening without the power of God working in it.
While it's true we're not to cast stones of judgement (seek our own justice in God's name); it was a cast stone that brought down the giant Goliath. And that stone, and the one who threw it, were empowered by the Spirit led remembrance of God's past power. In this modern age we cast social media stones. We share social media truths. And we fact check them all by sharing the observations of the unknowing unknown. Discernment is lost in this secular religious age. No thing is new, The Truth is still not a relative root planted in the garden of your own soil.
The disciple says:
The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
1 Corinthians 2:14
The Maker gets the final word:
Jesus said, “Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.”
Luke 12:21
