THE GOD OF LOVE - LOVE LIFT YOU UP WHERE YOU BELONG
Week 10:
KNOW WHAT YOU KNOW – Love Comes From God In Us
Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God...Since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and His love is brought to full expression in us. (1 John 4:7, 9-12)
Friends, I want to make an assertion about rebelliousness and pride. I'm going to share an allegory story about a stubborn ox (hint: it's you) and it’s my hope this allegory will help you know God’s love. I chose the ox analogy because that animal really is a great representation of what humanity is truly like. But first a little context about being yoked in God's Love.
The Assertion: When you go forth doing work for God's kingdom you must be yoked with Jesus Christ. You are the young, rebellious inexperienced but strong-willed oxen. When you are living "in Christ" you will be yoked to Jesus, and he will guide you, keeping you on track.
God is the Source of Love. Children of God are living out the life of love. And Jesus is perfecting it in us. Not in fear, but by righteousness and light. He accomplishes this by The Holy Spirit transforming power of love that is cultivated in us as we walk yoked together in fellowship with God. The powerful spirit of love and truth that lives within us is known by the love that is then expressed. Love comes down from heaven, love dwells within us, and He commands that we must love one another sharing it in our walk of life as living witnesses to His Love.
Q: How does God’s love come down from heaven?
A: Because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him, 1 John 4:9
Q: How does God’s love live within us?
A: The Spirit of God’s love and truth is yoked together with God’s children by the righteousness and light of God cultivated and expressed in the lives of His children.
That indwelling love from God must be yoked together with the child of faith. It cannot be God’s love unless it is his yoke. We, the children of God, are the weaker vessels, the young, unknowing, stubborn, and often rebellious oxen. And in order that we cultivate His perfected love we must stay yoked together with the stronger almighty God, the author of love to guide us and keep us in His way.
Q: How do we become yoked together with God’s Spirit?
A: Jesus invites everyone to get involved in this cultivation.
Matthew 11:28-29: “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”
Q: What does it mean to be yoked together with Christ?
A: In the Hebrew understanding, our walk with Christ would have been seen as something like three yokes. The first is the yoke of knowing about God by yoking ourselves to His Word (The Law) Galatians 3:24: “Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster [to bring us] unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.” The second yoke is indeed our faith and trust placed in Christ’s righteousness and his promises of sanctification and resurrection. And the third yoke is living out that faith through a lively spiritual love at work in one another James 2:26: “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” This is how a fully functioning, full bodied, spirit filled person is yoked together in Christ’s love.
Yoke yourself to Heaven by keeping your mind yoked upon all that is good and from God above. Yoke yourself to God’s word and stayed upon Christ by devoting yourself to knowing his will through the instructions of the Holy Spirit. And if you do these first two, the yoke of good works will follow. And you will walk in victory, strength, and love overcoming the world with God’s love.
At the crucifixion, Simon of Cyren was compelled by the Roman executioners to help Jesus carry his cross. In effect, Jesus’ crime and punishment was being yoked upon Simon. Most Bible scholars believe Simon of Cyrene became a believer in Christ, because three of the Gospel writers not only knew his name and where he was from, but other personal details, suggesting they were familiar with him (Matthew 27:32, Mark 15:21; Luke 23:26). I see in this crucifixion scene and picture of being yoked with Christ. When yoked together by the cross, Christ takes on our sin and we take on his righteousness and all the costs, the weight, of that discipleship experience comes with it. And one thing is certain. The cross must be carried, and the crucifixion must happen. Together the messengers yoked with the cross will give witness to Christ’s love.
FACT OF THE MATTER IS:
Being yoked to Christ is a relationship of learning and following.
Human pride works against Christ’s meekness, they're opposites and cannot work together for pride demands to be the lead ox. To find rest, we must turn from our own pride and allow The Lord’s meekness to take the lead. We are like a wild animal, with self-destructive instincts; fleshly pride, if allowed to run, it will destroy our faith. But if we will yoke ourselves to Christ, then meekness, being a fruit of the Spirit, will tame pride, and we will find rest for our souls.
Next week we’ll finish this study on love with this…
