John 4:23 Jesus shared in an evangelist moment:
"a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks."
Sharing your faith, through preaching and teaching, with anyone and everyone is evangelism. For followers (disciples or 'true worshipers') of the way of Jesus Christ, so called Christians, evangelism is a mandate. And it's unfortunate in this age that many who profess the faith also neglect the command to spread Christ's good new message. Several factors come into play to bring about the severe decline in evangelism. It's not just a growing cultural suspicion for all things Christian, or spiritual apathy. It's not a feeling of being untrained or ill prepared to effectively share the gift of faith. Nearly half of his new generation of millennials (47%) feel deeply that it's socially wrong to share their faith with someone who may be in a faith other than the Christian way. Their focus, their ultimate concern seems to be largely influenced by the cultural temperature. In fact 3 out of 5 millennials believe that it's likely many friends, family, and neighbors are likely to take offense if they express their faith in conversation. And in this new age the prevailing think is that disagreement means judgment. And as a consequence there has even been a new and growing trend among that generation, and the latest GenZ generation, that being "deevangelism" resulting in a new cultural spiritual clout. A kind of new religious zealotism, an AntiChrist Christianity. This "you do you" religiosity is focused much less upon an ultimate uncompromising objective biblical truth, and mostly built upon emotivism and a desire to have never been thought of as criticizing another's lifestyle choices. A feelings first priority has replaced the command to permeate the culture with the gospel message. And make no mistake, that is the ultimate command Jesus commanded of his followers, to permeate the world with faith in Him.
EVANGELISM ISN'T ABOUT FILLING UP CHURCH PEWS
The evangelism command from Jesus (go and, "preach", sharing the good news in every nation and to the ends of the earth) wasn't that everyone on earth should go to church. In fact it was just the opposite. The command was that the church should go everywhere into the earth and speak the teachings about the good news. Being Christian isn't about building buildings and funding church business. Being Christian is about sharing the good news of salvation through the Lord Jesus. It's not about picking a religious tribe. Its not about adopting a special mannerism (the semblances of holiness), language (faithspeak), and religiosity (spiritual dogma). It's not about supporting a particular geographic community and particular doctrines. It's not about points of style, music, and looking like the world sprinkled with Christianized fervor. Being Christian is about being about the spirit and truth and sharing that spirit and truth (see John 5:23-24) wherever you happen to be led. Those who answer that calling and practice that profession are the 'true worshipers'. And when I say "profession" I'm not speaking in particular about worldly approved and indoctrinated scholars, teachers, preachers, and deacons. I mean to say that ALL who serve the good news command, the 'true worshipers', are called to the fulfillment of this command.
John 4:24
"God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
