Read Mark 3:27
Right off the bat I’ll give you a quick hint, you’ve got to become possessed.
What’s that you say?
We’re living in the dark end times. In this age it seems like everyone is trying to become an “influencer“. What much of the world doesn’t realize is throughout the history of mankind there have been influencers at work. They are the little devils, they are Satan‘s demonic influencers. And they spend a lot of effort and time filling up the hearts and minds of vulnerable people with evil propaganda and misinformation. And we can pray a hedge of protection against them and their works, but we damn well better have filled our own souls with the power of the Holy Spirit if we don’t want to become the victim of a sneak attack by a horde of demonic influencers.
In Mark 3:27 we can watch as the scribes from Jerusalem try to convince the people that Jesus is casting out demons through the power and authority of Satan, and not from God’s authority. To counter that claim, Jesus explains that doing so would be counterproductive for Satan by effectively undoing his own evil work.
In the story, the role of the strong man is played by Satan, the house is his domain which is the world of the worldly, and the goods (you and me) are what he possesses—and more specifically in this case, a blind and mute man whom Jesus releases from the power of a demon (Matthew 12:22). Jesus cannot use Satan's power to cast out the demon because He needs to bind Satan in order to free the man. He does this through the power of the Holy Spirit.
So earlier I gave you a hint in which I said you must become possessed. And that’s true, because there’s a danger for someone who has been cleansed of an evil spirit. The danger is that that spirit may return and he’s going to bring friends. This is important because it’s not enough to say a prayer of salvation, to claim your place at the foot of the cross and become justified by the blood of Jesus Christ. What must follow is the baptism of the Holy Spirit, to fill you with His spirit in order to protect you going forward onto sanctification.
Luke's version of this account is followed by a story of a man who is freed from a demon’s grip (Luke 11:24–26). The demon is just dispossessed, but not destroyed, just displaced for a time while it gathers strength. After wandering for a time, he gathers seven other demons and they all possess the man, leaving him worse off than when he began.
A man must be inhabited by another spirit—a good Spirit. This is what salvation in Christ offers. Faith in the name of Jesus Christ mingled with self determination alone isn’t going to protect you from the Satanic horde hunting you down daily. You must protect your spirit by becoming obedient to Christ’s Holy Spirit. You must surrender to his Spirit. For no evil spirit can possess a man who is filled with the Holy Spirit.
This is why Jesus had to ascend into heaven after the resurrection (Acts 1:6–11). That is why He said, "…it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you" (John 16:7). Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Jesus were here today and we could walk right up to him and talk with him. But truth be told it’s better that he sit at the right hand of his father in heaven, and sent to us his Holy Spirit to take possession of our souls. From that position of authority, his Holy Spirit can protect us from all demonic influencers.
Mark chapter 3 deals a lot with how different people react differently to the message that Jesus Christ is sharing, and the significance of his works. It’s an important chapter, because it reveals to us how differently people respond to the spiritual messages found in the Bible. It delves into motives. It exposes the hidden agendas. And what I want you to understand in this lesson today, is that it also reveals that behind those hidden agendas, behind all those different motives, are little satanic influencers trying to destroy the message.
So what’s a body to do?
Standing in the light of the cross, engaging in spiritual warfare consists of us holding onto our secure standing, confidently firm in our faith in His Word. And by obediently teaching and preaching the gospel, and serving the community of believers. And by praying for the power of the Holy Spirit to fill our souls. Matthew 18:18–the New Testament makes it clear that our primary posture is to submit to God and resist the Devil.
Take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. Pray in The Holy Spirit, “Give me your wisdom and discernment so I won't be caught off guard.” You need this protection because Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. These devils will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven when you’re focused upon the power found in the name of Jesus Christ. Take your stand against the devil’s schemes. Speak God’s Word to the devilish temptations. No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. For no word from God will ever fail. Everyone born of God overcomes the world.
Whatever strongholds the enemy wants to build up in your lives, know that you have powerful weapons of spiritual warfare to call upon in defense. Nothing will be impossible with God.
Pray with me won’t you?
In the powerful name of Jesus Christ, King of The Universe, and by the power of His cross and blood, we ask that you bind the evil spirits, the influencing powers and forces of the earth, of the underground, of the air, of the water, of the fire, of the netherworld and the satanic forces of nature.
We turn away from any and all curses, sent against us and send them directly to Jesus for Him to deal with as He will. Lord, we likewise ask You to bless our enemies by sending your Holy Spirit to lead them to repentance.
We bind ourselves and all our interplay, known and unknown to us, all interaction and communication with evil spirits. We claim the protection of the blood of Jesus Christ over ourselves and our beloved friends and families. Thank You for Your protection, Lord. Thank you for all you’ve done, all you’re doing and all you’ve yet to do. Fill us with your Holy Spirit and free us from our worldly chains. Amen.
