“You cannot be a believer and not love and speak God’s Word in Jesus’ name.”
THE PROPHETS ARE CALLED TO SPEAK WHEN NO ONE ELSE IS WILLING AND THE ENEMY IS PERSECUTING THE WORD FROM GOD:
“Look! The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people.” Acts 5:25
THE CULTURE WANTS TO CANCEL THAT WORD FROM GOD:
“We strictly charged you not to teach IN HIS NAME (emphasis mine), yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man's blood upon us.”
THE CULTURAL ELITES HATE THE POWER FOUND IN HIS NAME AND YET THE PROPHETS, PREACHERS AND TEACHERS MUST EXHORT:
“We must obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”
THE PROPHETS AREN’T GOING TO CONVERT THE RELIGIOUS AND SECULAR AUTHORITIES, THEY LOVE THEIR POWER:
“When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them.”
AND GOD WILL EMPOWER THE WORD BRINGERS, ENCOURAGE, AND ENLIGHTEN THEM:
“And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus.”
(Acts 5:17-42)
These witnesses, these prophets of God’s good news, faithfully give testimony about His (Jesus’) blessings. They spoke about his kingdom to come. They shared his teachings about forgiveness of sin. They taught about the consequences of sin and about repentance. And of course they spoke about God’s mercy, holiness, and sanctification by His Holy Spirit. And they declared all these things mingled with his promises about salvation IN HIS NAME. Just as Jesus did—they spoke the word out-loud in the congregations.
Friends,
There’s a favorite quote taught often in the presence of the followers. Modern preachers and teachers will often borrow a turn of phrase from what’s thought to have been said by St. Francis of Assisi:
“Preach the Gospel at all times, and if necessary use words.”
The saying is often used as a recommendation for how we should primarily or even exclusively evangelize by our Christian action examples and not necessarily with our testimony through God’s word. I’ve never felt very comfortable with this idea. First because it’s not certain that Francis said these things, or meant to say what it’s being used for today. And next because I know that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. So it’s contrary to the examples of Jesus himself, and as we see above in the book of Acts, it’s contrary to the disciples example, and it’s contrary to the entire premodern history of the Church.
Today we’re living in a postmodern (possibly post-Christian) Western culture. We live in lies and propaganda, and we’re growing more and more comfortable with this fakenews daily behavior. Today we’re seeing a great falling away within “The Church”. And what that meant in the past, as we are shown in the Bible, is that God is going to raise up prophets, teachers, and preachers who will speak up and speak out where others refuse to go. God chose to establish his Church first in Jerusalem among his Chosen People who were persecuting that following, and he empowered them to take that message throughout all the nations. That’s a global message. Not meant to be compartmentalized and forced to share space with other spiritual disciplines and guru’s in order to coexist in a multicultural secular humanist society. Today there is a famine of the hearing of the Word of God. The culture wants to cancel that Word. The churches have turned away from the preaching of that Word. That falling away is known as apostasy.
Friends—You cannot be a believer and not love and speak God’s Word in Jesus’ name.
“Examine yourselves to see if your faith is genuine. Test yourselves. Surely you know that Jesus Christ is among you; if not, you have failed the test of genuine faith.” (2Corinthians 13:5)
I mean how can you say to yourself that Jesus lives within you; that you walk with and talk with him, and yet you refuse to do what he has instructed you to do?
I pray to God for you all, and I hope you’re going to dig deep into your purpose and walk with Christ. We, The Church, we cannot oppose the truth, but must always stand for the truth. Be joyful. Grow to maturity. Encourage each other. Live in harmony and peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you. May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
AMEN.
