Genesis 8:1-4
But God remembered Noah and all the animals and all the livestock that were with him in the ark; and God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the water subsided. Also the fountains of the deep and the floodgates of the sky were closed, and the rain from the sky was restrained; and the water receded steadily from the earth, and at the end of 150 days the water decreased. Then in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, the ark rested upon the mountains of Ararat.
This marks the great turning. Judgment has had its full course; now the word of the LORD begins the work of restoration. 150 days they travelled on the currents of the floodwaters and rested until dry land was found. For nearly another two months they stayed in the ark until God spoke to them.
What the Spirit of God stirred up and ordered at the beginning, He now orders again. The fountains of the deep and the floodgates of the sky are closed. The rain cycle is taking shape and stands as a reminder that it is and always has been God's sovereign will that provides our suitable habitation in the galaxy.
God closed them into the ark by His hand, and now by His word He brings them home. He does not abandon the ones He has preserved.
What does it mean, "God remembered Noah"?
It is the language of faithful intervention. It's a reminder for the reader really. It speaks to God keeping his promises. God's remembrance here is the active fulfillment of the word spoken before the flood ever began.
Genesis 8:20
Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and took some of every kind of clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
After the waters recede, the ground dries, and God speaks the command to leave (8:15–16), Noah’s first recorded act is worship. This is the beginning of the covenant relationship with God and man. Not a payment for safe passage, but an acknowledgment that life has been preserved by the word and hand of the LORD. That sequence matters. God remembered Noah according to His prior word; He turned the flood; He restrained the instruments of judgment; He brought the ark to rest; and in His time He released them. Noah’s answer is the altar.
And God seals this new covenant with the rainbow.
What is that covenant?
Genesis 8:21; 9:11
The Lord smelled the soothing aroma [of the altar], and the Lord said to Himself, "I will never again curse the ground on account of man, for the intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth; and I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done...(9:11) I establish My covenant with you; and all flesh shall never again be eliminated by the waters of a flood, nor shall there again be a flood to destroy the earth.”
And this covenant is set for "all future generations" (9:12b)
Every generation from everlasting to everlasting are covered by this covenant. These were the first people from the flood. And every human being since has been born out of these people. The scope is universal for all life on the earth after the flood. And at this point there is no idolatry. No false religion. No prejudice. No discrimination and presuppositions. But this was to be short-lived. We know and should remember "the intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth". That condition is not suspended. And from that time a new dynamic is being developed. Noah grows a vineyard and makes wine from his harvest, and the next recorded act within the family brings the curse upon Canaan.
So the covenant stands; but the heart remains what God had already named it. Some things never change. The promise does not change, and neither does the diagnosis.
Amen 🙏🏼
