"Come out of her, my people"
Revelation 18:4-8
Then I heard another voice from heaven say: "'Come out of her, my people,' so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues; for her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her crimes. Give back to her as she has given; pay her back double for what she has done. Pour her a double portion from her own cup. Give her as much torment and grief as the glory and luxury she gave herself. In her heart she boasts, 'I sit enthroned as queen. I am not a widow; I will never mourn.' Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her: death, mourning and famine. She will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.
It's a timeless story. Our God has been calling humanity to leave Babylon, to flee from the Babylonians since the time of the prophets. The call to have none of it, to touch no unclean thing, to come out from it and be pure. To flee, to lead, and to sing about the Lord’s redemption from her midst. Flee the wrath that is coming upon her (Isaiah 48:20, 52:11; Jeremiah 50:8, 51:6, 45).
And the prophets of the New Testament continue that call:
2 Corinthians 6:17
Therefore,
"Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you."
Why the call?
Because the people of God are already in the system. Frankly, they are the system. Though they know not what they do. They wonder at the times and seasons, the things of the temples, the glories of the saints and the magnificent buildings they've erected. They marvel at their ability to make holy things and places. They write poetry about pious things and lofty promises of holiness. They set up ceremonies to recall their grandfathers grandeurs and the names of the martyrs. All these things to excuse the fact that they've remained amidst her.
From Isaiah and Jeremiah, through Paul to the voice of Revelation 18, the same summons keeps sounding; come out from her, because remaining is not neutral.
The prophets call wasn't speaking to pagans first. They spoke to a people already living inside her empire, already trading with her, already borrowing her language of security and glory. This call was addressed to Judah. It was addressed to those who already claimed the name of the Lord.
Revelation 18:4 does the same. "My people" are in her. The people of God have become the system while still singing about their own holiness. Temples, liturgies, martyr calendars, poetry about "the saints," and the careful preservation of their grandfather’s grandeur. These are not automatically Babylon. Oh sure, they started from pure motives. But they have become her furniture when these traditions began functioning as permission to stay.
Without knowing, they have already changed owners. What began as remembrance becomes insulation. The building, the calendar, the hymn, the grandfather’s name; none of them are Babylon by nature. They become her furniture the moment they quiet the voice that is still saying, "Come out."
That is why verse 4 gives two purposes in one breath...
"so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues."
Remaining is participation. Even longing after her as you flee is the love of Lot's wife. A shared table, a shared cup, a shared judgment. Verse 5 tells why the lingering has run out of time.
"Her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her crimes."
So the judgement is fixed, what God remembers is what damns her. The verdict has been sealed. What remains is the sentencing. And in the same way that her crimes sealed her fate, her sentence is meted out according to her own record. The judgment is measured by her own hand.
"Give back to her as she has given; pay her back double for what she has done. Pour her a double portion from her own cup. Give her as much torment and grief as the glory and luxury she gave herself."
And her arrogance is shared by many.
Any remembrance, any hymn, any stone that lets the people of God say the same things she says of herself in holy language is already drinking from her cup. The cup she used to intoxicate the earth is the cup returned to her, doubled. The luxury she wore as proof she would never be a widow becomes the exact weight of her mourning. And those who share her bed in her playground have taken upon themselves all of her plagues, even though they've put Jesus Christ's name on it.
So is the warning inside the invitation. It's about innocence consciousness, the quiet certainty that we cannot be sharing in her sins because we still say His name, still keep the liturgical calendar, and still sing the old hymns. That innocence consciousness is the insulation. Like the fig leaf in the garden. It lets a people remain at her table and still feel clean.
But verse 4 will not allow it. Because remaining is participation. The Name spoken over the furniture does not empty the cup of plagues.
Think about Lucifer. This angel was decked out. Exalted in pride its true, but nonetheless he was beautiful. And humanity loved him, even knowing they have sinned in him.
Why else put on a fig leaf?
They knew what they've done. And they tried to hide it.
And humanity has loved that hypocrisy covering ever since. They loved the shine of the knowledge of sin, even while knowing they have sinned in him. The leaf did not undo the act. It only dressed up the knowledge of it. It eased the consciousness of sin.
Babylon works the same way. She is magnificent. She is dressed in gold and pearls and the blood of saints. She looks like something worth staying near. Grand cathedrals. Centuries of tradition. A cavalcade of saints and relics. A mosaic of time-honored furnishings. All of it has become another leaf; beauty pulled over the fact that we are still at her table, still sharing her cup, still repeating her boast but in sacred tones.
The voice from heaven is not impressed by the mosaic. But they believe that voice isn't speaking about them.
"Come out of her, My people, so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues."
They hear that call, and they turn around looking to see who the voice is speaking about.
That turning is the last fig leaf. The summons was never aimed at the pagan in the street first. It was aimed at Judah. It was aimed at those who already claimed the Name.
Wake up to righteousness. It's you He's talking to fool!
It is aimed at the ones still seated, still singing, still sure the warning must be for someone else.
That fig leaf never saved anyone from shame. In fact the Lord had to replace even that with animal skins (the first sacrifice). The covering we sew for ourselves never works. Only the covering He provides does.
So..."Come out of her, My people..."
Not into another costume of innocence, but unto Him.
He receives those who come and touch no unclean thing. No excuses; "it's art, not an idol. It's a reminder." Since when do we kiss and venerate reminders?
A reminder that must be kissed has already become more than a reminder. The leaf is still a leaf, even when it's made from the finest gold.
Be smart. Be wise. Be watchful. And be careful fools. Because our God is mighty. And she is not. In just one day the difference will be seen. Even though she has multitudes of loving children, she cannot resist His mighty power.
Until then the voice is still speaking. Still speaking to the ones who have not yet stopped turning around. To the ones who are still fleeing her country.
Come out of her!
Amen 🙏🏼
