The Judgement of False Religion
Revelation 17:1-2
One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, "Come, I will show you the punishment of the great prostitute, who sits by many waters. With her the kings of the earth committed adultery, and the inhabitants of the earth were intoxicated with the wine of her adulteries."
One of the same angels who poured out the wrath now invites John to see the judgment of the great prostitute. This is not a spectacle or a grand show of God's power and might. Instead, this is a look into the omniscient and sovereign power of the holy one.
The angel who carried one of the seven bowls of completed wrath is the same messenger who now says, "Come, I will show you." That detail is not incidental. The instruments of final judgment are already in hand; the invitation is not to watch a new display of power but to see what has already been decided.
God is not improvising. He is unveiling what His omniscience has always known and what His holiness has already sentenced since the beginning of all times.
This vision is therefore a look into the character of the Holy One more than a spectacle His of force. The prostitute sits, the kings commit adultery with her, the earth is drunk in it; yet none of it surprises our God. He's not discovering her influence; He exposes it.
Sovereignty here is quiet, settled, and terrifyingly complete. The same God who confused the languages at Babel has never lost track of the confusion that grew out from that tower. God has measured the wine, He numbered the kings, and He fixed the hour when the cup she mixed will be given back to her. It's all His doing.
This is justice and communication. This is for the benefit of the saints. And we see how they cry out with encouragement from the altar for the Justice being served.
God is letting His people see that the sentence has never been in doubt, that the intoxication of the earth has never been hidden from Him, and that the Holy One will not leave the blood of the witnesses unanswered.
So much of our history has been written of the pursuit of truth and all its many configurations. People from every walk of life. National upon nation have sought for this Truth. And not having found it, or finding it and choosing to reject and replace it, they build their own ways of truths. The religions of untruths. Mainly religious beliefs that focus on the creature comforts, and earthly sources of power.
That is the wine the great prostitute pours out. That is the adultery the kings are committing. That is the drunkenness that covers the whole earth. The tower of Babel never really came down; it only changed its name and learned to sit on many waters.
Even following the gospels coming live and in person in the embodiment of The Holy One, the same Babylon spirit showed itself quickly. The church isn't even twenty years old when these people were disobeying Christ by lording over one another. The very thing He had forbidden (Matthew 20:25–28). The hunger for earthly power and religious control did not wait for later centuries. It was already mixing its wine inside the visible church. That is why the warning in these verses is not only about some group "out there." It's about any system, any structure, any leader that trades the testimony of Jesus for the comforts and thrones of this age.
Jesus Himself named it in the letters to the churches. He commended Ephesus for hating the works of the Nicolaitans and rebuked Pergamum for holding on to their teaching (Revelation 2:6, 15). He rebuked them for setting a priestly class over the laity. The Lord hated them for this false claim of authority they attempted to impose.
This wrath, this pouring out of God's judgment is upon these spirits. Unmasking every substitute. And keeping the saints sober. He is reminding us that the Holy One always knows which cup is poison and which blood will be answered.
Jesus died to open the door to Himself, to lead the way into His kingdom. This is why He hates these false priests and their false idols. He did not shed His blood so that another mediating class could stand between His people and Him. He is the Door (John 10:7–9). He is the new and living way (Hebrews 10:19–20). So here in the Revelation we see God communicating His hatred for these people who would prostitute themselves to these priests and priestesses. He hates them who drink the wine, who give themselves to the system, who prefer a human mediator and an earthly cup over the access Christ already purchased.
These men and women are those who have tried to rebirth and refresh the old Babylonian religious traditions. The worship of Ashtoreth (Astarte/Ishtar), the queen-of-heaven fertility cults, the sacred prostitution, the blending of throne and altar that Israel was repeatedly judged for. With traditions and stories of a virgin birth and resurrection after three days, with the coloring of eggs and calling upon the prolific Rabbit gods.
The names are changed, but the wine is still the same. They celebrate year after year this Astarte season. Decoration of trees. Coloring eggs. December 25th.
All of it, all this art and ceremony is of Babylonian origins. Even the images of the Maiden Madonna Semiramis the mother and Tammuz her virgin born son. And even with the halos set around their heads. All have become another pouring out of the same wine.
Mystery Babylon, Ishtar the mother of harlots. Year after year the season is kept, and the danger is that people drink from the image, the ceremony, the atmosphere, and never come through the Door.
Now the angel turns from the cup to the beast she rides. The woman sits on a scarlet beast full of blasphemous names, with seven heads and ten horns (Revelation 17:3).
John is being shown a political-religious power that can be recognized in his own day and that will appear again.
We learn about the beast who was, who is not, and yet is. Seven heads, seven mountains, and the mind that has wisdom to discern these things about the woman who sits there.
The Roman city and the seven kings (Emperors) that have reigned there. Five fallen, already dead when John wrote his book. One is. And the other is not yet come. But when he does come it'll be for a very short time.
The Beast who was and is not, is the eighth, but from the previous five Roman Emperors. Now he is no longer alive, he is in the abyss. But he will ascend from there. And the world will wonder at this one who rises again from the dead (Nero redivivus).
Some believe this one is Caesar Nero, the one previously referred to as "The Beast" in his time. He was thought in that time to be possessed by demonic perverted spirits. His crimes committed then were absolutely horrific. Beyond any reason. Just purely vicious and blasphemous.
And this Beast will assign, for a very short time, ten kings to himself to make war against Christ.
Whether the eighth is Nero restored, a Nero-like figure, or a final head who gathers up all the previous blasphemy in himself, the text’s point is the same. The world will marvel at the one who was, is not, and yet comes up from the abyss. Even now I hear people speak in terms of Christ returning in a person, another human manifestation. Another embodiment, another "anointed one" who is supposed to be the Lord among us again.
This sort of thinking is entirely false. This is not the blessed hope. The true Christ does not rise from the abyss. He does not need a new incarnation to finish what He already accomplished.
He is the Door already opened.
Any gospel that points to a man who "was, is not, and yet is" as if he were the returning Lord is drinking from the beast’s blaspheming cup.
So yes, the world will wonder, but the saints are told to discern.
Stay near the Door. Flee the seasons, the images, the ceremony, or the rumor of a man who "returns" becoming the cup you drink from. Amen 🙏🏼
