Revelation 14:1-5
"Then I looked, and behold, the Lamb was standing on Mount Zion, and with Him 144,000 who had His name and the name of His Father written on their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of loud thunder, and the voice which I heard was like the sound of harpists playing on their harps. And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders; and no one was able to learn the song except the 144,000 who had been purchased from the earth. These are the ones who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are celibate. These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These have been purchased from mankind as first fruits to God and to the Lamb. And no lie was found in their mouths; they are blameless."
That is the picture of those who belong to Jesus in the hour of the world's greatest pressure. No slogans, no counterfeits, not smoke and mirrors. These are the first fruits of the harvest.
The world, on the other hand in chapter 13 is all about slogans, images, the mark, and enforced worship. The Lamb on Zion is none of that. He simply stands, and those who belong to Him are with Him.
These 144,000 are not the entire harvest. They are the first portion lifted up to God and the Lamb; proof that the field belongs to Him and that more is coming. Firstfruits are set apart from the rest of mankind, not because they were better raw material, but because they were purchased.
Do you understand this?
The farmer planted the entirety of the fields. He cultivated the entirety of the fields. He protected the whole from pests and diseases. And he takes His first fruits from that whole harvest. The farmer did not plant two different fields. He planted the whole. He worked the whole. He guarded the whole from what would ruin it.
When the time comes he does not invent a separate crop; he walks into the same field he has been tending and lifts the first ripe portion to God. That first sheaf is not a different kind of wheat. It is wheat from this field, taken first, set apart, offered to God. This is why Revelation 14 can say they were "purchased from the earth" and "purchased from mankind as first fruits to God and to the Lamb."
Why does God do this?
Do you recall the old testament story about how they sent a choir to go out before the enemy?
The story is about Jehoshaphat in 2 Chronicles 20.
A vast enemy coalition is coming against Judah. Jehoshaphat is afraid, and he seeks the Lord, and the Spirit answers through Jahaziel.
"the battle is not yours but God’s. You will not need to fight in the usual way. Stand firm and see the salvation of the Lord."
The next morning Jehoshaphat does something insane looking to every military mind. He appoints singers to praise the beauty of holiness, and he sends the choir out in front of the army.
As they begin to sing and praise...
"Give thanks to the Lord, for His steadfast love endures forever"
...the Lord sets ambushes.
The enemies turn on one another, confused by what they are witnessing.
And Judah arrives to find the work already done.
God puts the song first.
He planted the whole field. He cultivated the whole field. He guarded the whole field. When He lifts the first ripe sheaf, He is not sampling to see if the crop is any good. He is declaring, in public, this field is Mine. The first portion goes to Him because the whole already belongs to Him. Firstfruits are the choir walking out in front of the harvest.
The 144,000 are that first sheaf and that choir. They stand and sing with the Lamb on Zion while the beast is still marking the earth for destruction. The 144,000 sing a new song no one else can learn, before the throne, before the living creatures and the elders, while the slogans and the image and the enforced worship are still loud and proud on the ground.
God does not wait until Babylon has finished falling to start singing the victory song. The song is not a strategy they invented. It is the sound of people who have already been taken out of mankind and set with the Lamb. No one else can learn it because no one else has been bought that way.
Counterfeit religion and worship can copy words. It cannot copy redemption. This is why they follow the Lamb wherever He goes. The choir does not choose the route. Wherever He goes includes Zion and the path that led there.
Where did they come from?
The very same fields from which all the redeemed are taken. Firstfruits are not a sheltered display case. They are wheat from the same field, offered first, still identified with the One who purchased them.
Why the distinction? Why does the Lord need this kind of disciples?
A choir sent ahead of the army cannot afford a false note. The world of chapter 13 runs on image, slogan, and enforced speech. The firstfruits tell the truth. Their song matches their seal. Their feet match their song.
God does this because He will not let the counterfeit have the first word or the last. Jehoshaphat did not wait until the coalition had collapsed to send the singers out. He sent them while the enemy was still coming. The praise went first; the ambush followed. Their worship is the battle cry.
Babylon will fall.
The text will say it twice in a few verses. Fallen, fallen.
But God will not let the fall be the first sound. He puts the victory song in the mouths of those who belong to Jesus before the dust of Babylon has even settled. Babylon does not get to set the timing of the praise.
So the distinction is not that God loves a special crop more than the rest of the field. The distinction is that He will have a people whose mouths and feet already match the Name on their foreheads while the counterfeit is still shouting.
Yeah, you're in love with Jesus.
Yeah, things are hard.
Yeah, sometimes God doesn't seem interested in answering your prayers.
That does not take you out of the choir. The firstfruits were not lifted because the field was easy. They were lifted because they had been purchased and they stayed with the Lamb no matter where He took them.
Love for Jesus does not cancel the hardness. It keeps you on the path the choir does not get to choose. Unanswered prayer is not proof you were planted in the wrong field. It is often the stretch of ground where the song is learned.
You came from the same fields as all the redeemed. You were not a display case. You are wheat offered first, still identified with the One who bought you. Things are hard. He is still standing. Stay with the Lamb. The timing of the praise was never Babylon’s, and it was never yours to postpone until the prayers feel answered. The song has already started.
Don't stop singing.
The song is already the sound of the purchased, not the sound of people whose field got easy. Hardness does not dismiss you from the choir. Silence does not mean you were sown in the wrong ground. Follow Him wherever He goes. Keep the Name and the song together. Babylon does not get the first word or the last, and it does not get to tell you when to quit.
Don’t stop singing.
Amen 🙏🏼
