The Cadence of Revelation
Revelation 1:1-3
"The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show to His bond-servants, the things which must soon take place; and He sent and communicated it by His angel to His bond-servant John, who testified to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, everything that he saw. Blessed is the one who reads, and those who hear the words of the prophecy and keep the things which are written in it; for the time is near."
This letter was written to be read in the congregations. To be heard by the church. And the letter is already teaching its hearers how to receive it.
1. "God gave Him..."
The chain of delivery. The Father is the source. The first beat is the divine initiative.
2. "...to show to His bond-servants..."
Disclosure, not speculation. The second beat is the intended audience and the urgency of what must take place.
3. "...by His angel"
The third beat is the means. The Son does not merely receive; He sends and signifies. Transmission is itself part of the revelation.
The context:
1. 2. 3 again.
John "testified" (1)
"to the word of God" (2)
"and to the testimony of Jesus Christ," (3)
He bore witness to three things that are ultimately one. The Word, the Testimony, and the vision itself.
The revelation is given, shown, and sent.
It is to be read, heard, and kept.
This cadence is intended to train servants who live in the "soon" and the "near."
This is the three step of revelation.
1. the one who reads.
2. those who hear.
3. those who keepfor the time is near.
There is a point to knowing how to dance this dance. Revelation does not stop at delivery. It is not finished until it is kept.
Servants who live between the giving and the keeping must learn to walk in threes.
Receive what the Father gave the Son.
See what the Son showed the servants.
Keep what the Spirit still says to the churches.
Receive • See • Keep
We see this dance throughout the letter. Like seven beatitudes.
For instance:
Blessed is the one who reads, those who hear, and those who keep what is written. (Revelation 1:3)
Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on. (Revelation 14:13)
"Yes," says the Spirit, "that they may rest from their labors", "for their deeds follow them."

Kept unto death.
Labor ends.
In the Lord.

Behold, I am coming like a thief.
Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his garments.
So that he will not walk about naked and be seen exposed. (Revelation 16:15)
1 • 2 • 3
Blessed are those who are invited.
To the marriage supper of the Lamb.
These are the true words of God. (Revelation 19:9)
1 • 2 • 3
Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection.
Over these the second death has no power.
They will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him. (Revelation 20:6)
1 • 2 • 3
And behold, (see) I am coming quickly. (hear) Blessed is the one who KEEPS the words of the prophecy of this book. (Revelation 22:7)
1 • 2 • 3
Blessed are those who wash their robes (1), so that they may have the right (2) to the tree of life and may enter (3) by the gates into the city. (Revelation 22:14)
Washed robes. Access. Entrance.

The seven blessings of the revelation are the letter teaching the churches how the dance ends.
Revelation does not stop at delivery. It's not about knowing and figuring it out. It is not finished until it is kept. The keepers are called blessed all the way from the reading of the letter to the gates of the city.
Receive • See • Keep
That is the beatitude path of the three step revelation dance. But it's more than an understanding about how John wired this letter. It's a pastoral pattern being breathed into the saints.
There is a blessing associated with this letter because it builds this pattern for us. The blessing is that the letter trains the saints to live inside the three-step.
Receive.
See.
Keep.
Amen 🙏🏼
