Revelation 8:8-9
"The second angel sounded, and something like a great mountain burning with fire was hurled into the sea; and a third of the sea became blood, and a third of the creatures which were in the sea and had life, died; and a third of the ships were destroyed."
Following the judgment of the land, the second trumpet turns to the sea. God is touching the foundations of human life and commerce one sphere at a time, and He is still limiting the blow to a third. Mercy is still mixed with judgment.
The catalyst is "something like a great mountain".
The closest Old Testament language is Jeremiah 51:25, where the Lord says of Babylon, "I am against you, O destroying mountain…I will stretch out My hand against you, roll you down from the crags, and make you a burnt mountain."
A third of the sea becomes blood. A third of the living creatures in the sea die. A third of the ships are destroyed. Life in the water and the economy that depends on the water are both struck. The sea that looked boundless and the fleets that looked invincible are shown to be under the same sovereign hand that once parted the Red Sea. And yet the restraint itself is grace; time to repent, time to wake up, time to remember that the earth and the sea are the Lord’s.
When you are a believer who puts his or her trust in scripture above all else you look for scripture to interpret scripture. You want scripture to explain itself.
For instance, the great fiery mountain. What is that? A discerning disciple wants to know these things. And The bloodied sea? What is that about? You're imagining all the various natural phenomena that might cause these things. But scripture interprets scripture more safely than current events and understanding. The burning mountain recalls Jeremiah’s word against Babylon. The dying sea-life and ruined ships recall the prophets’ oracles against Tyre and the merchants. John is not giving us a timetable for an asteroid or a particular foreign navy. He is showing us that the systems men trust; nature’s abundance and human commerce, can be touched in a moment when the Lamb opens the next seal and the next angel sounds. The imagery isn't all that important, not really the point. What's important is the mercy given and the wrath given.
The second trumpet is not written so that the church can sit in fear of the next headline. It is written so that we remember we are sojourners on the path (life) that Lord has prepared and preordained.
The discerning disciple is right to press the questions and then refuse to answer it from the newspaper. "Something like a great mountain burning with fire" is not given so we can name the volcano, the asteroid, or the war machines. John himself withholds the name of it. He uses the visionary term "like" and then immediately shows what the hurling does. Scripture’s own habit is to let the effect interpret the image.
The mercy and grace of God are at work still. That's the focus we should witness, for that's the reason men and women find faith and receive friendship with God. Not because they figured out some mystery, but because they now understand how merciful God really is.
I mean, take a look at what's happening here. A third angel sends the star "Wormwood" to poison a third of the fresh waters. A fourth angel darkens a third of the sun and moon. Day and night are altered. And the worse is still yet to come.
God up till now has given His mercy and grace is great abundance. His restraint has been monumental. Many are receiving His blessing in these times. A true revival.
I believe there is a rapture. I believe it happens here at this moment in the tribulations. When death is about to be withheld and literally all the restraints of hell breaks down; then the Lord gathers His people to Himself.
What's about to happen is beyond grace and mercy. When death no longer comes. When demonic beings are free to roam the earth. Then the devil's own are judged.
Revelation 8:13
Then I looked, and I heard an eagle crying with a loud voice as it flew directly overhead, "Woe, woe, woe to those who dwell on the earth, at the blasts of the other trumpets that the three angels are about to blow!"
This is the heralding angel of the Lord. Announcing the removal of all restraints, and the elimination of all mercy and grace for those who have taken the mark of the Beast. Notice to whom the eagle speaks.
This is the hinge. The same heaven that has been measuring thirds now sends a herald. The cry is not to the church as sojourners first; it is to "those who dwell on the earth". The settled, the marked, the ones whose home is this present order.
Three woes.
Three remaining trumpets.
The limitations of mercy is giving way to something else. It gives way to the Abyss. What follows in chapter 9 matches the warning. The fifth trumpet does not kill a third; it torments, and "in those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, and death will flee from them" (9:6).
Imagine this. You're not even able to kill yourself. Literally the walking dead. Like something out of a horror movie. The restraint that has always included the mercy of death itself is lifted.
The abyss is opened. What had been bound is permitted to roam. The sixth trumpet then takes a third of mankind by the four angels at the Euphrates. And the seventh will bring the kingdom announcements of 11:15. The eagle of 8:13 is telling the truth in advance. The character of the judgments is changing.
The sojourner’s path does not change. We do not sit in fear of the next headline, and we do not treat the imagery as the prize. We remember the earth and the sea are the Lord’s, we walk the path He prepared, and we bear witness to the mercy that is being taken from the earth.
That taking is what informs my opinion about the rapture of the church. Without the restraint, the Holy Spirit, the church cannot stand. The Lord must at this point keep His promises to them. He cannot leave them alone He will not. He's said as much and scripture proves scripture.
There is One who restrains, and he will restrain until he is taken out of the way; and then the lawless one is revealed (2 Thessalonians 2:6–7). Without the restraint; the Holy Spirit’s present holding, and the church that is the temple in which He dwells, the church cannot stand in what 9:6 describes. The Lord has promised He will not leave His own as orphans (John 14:18). He will keep them. He has said He will come and gather them to Himself (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17; John 14:3).
The synthesis, the sequence for me; restrainer removed, church gathered, woes begin. The sojourner’s path does not change either way. We do not sit in fear of the next headline. We do not make the imagery the prize. We remember that the earth and the sea are the Lord’s, we walk the path He prepared and preordained, and we bear witness while mercy available. The synthesis is promise laid beside promise. These things are in the book so that we would be awake, kept, and sure of the One who will not leave His own.
Amen 🙏🏼
