The Ear Is The Circumcised Heart
Revelation 2:7
"The one who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who overcomes, I will grant to eat from the tree of life, which is in the Paradise of God."
When people ask you about your hope in Christ, what do you say to them?
For me this passage lays it out perfectly. I hope to hear Him more perfectly. I hope to see Him and be with Him in paradise. It's not so much the place for me as it is the Person. It's the First and the Last that is my hope. He is the Tree of Life and that is my hope. To be with Him and to eat His fruit.
Revelation 2:7 is one of those verses that does not merely describe our hope. It locates it. Hearing here is not auditory. It is the Spirit-given capacity to receive what the risen Christ is actually saying now to His people. When Jesus walked the earth during his ministry, his people didn't know Him. They asked him and he answered, "before Abraham, I AM." The I AM of John 8:58 is the same Voice speaking in Revelation 2:7. When they asked Him who He thought He was, He did not give them a title they could manage. He gave them the Name. “Before Abraham was, I AM.” That is not a statement about chronology. It is a claim to the eternal, self-existent One who spoke from the bush, who walked in the garden, and the One who now walks among the lampstands.
The people who heard Him in the flesh still did not know Him. They had the sound of His words and missed the Speaker. That is why the letter to Ephesus (and every letter) begins with the call to hear. The risen Christ is not a memory of a first-century rabbi. He is the same I AM, now addressing His churches by the Spirit. Hearing is the Spirit opening the ear to recognize that Voice; not as history, not as doctrine only, but as the living One who is present. He's present. Not in a wafer. Not in a cloth. Not on a crucifix. Not attracted by the scent of sandalwood. His Voice is His Spirit within those who have ears.
The Voice is the Spirit of the I AM dwelling in those who have been given ears. That is why the promise is not "come find Me in the right place" but "hear what I am saying." During his earthly ministry Jesus encountered many who were saying they were Jews but really weren't. Paul the apostle said it like this, not all who have the law are justified, for circumcision is not an outward ritual but really something of the heart. It's an inward work within the heart. And in that age there were many trusting in the law, they had the law, and they trusted in the outward observation of the law. But Jesus said to them, "unless your righteousness exceeds that of the Pharisees you're not going to enter into the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5:20).
Jesus was explaining that the law is spiritual, and the outward expression doesn't accomplish the law. He used the example of the lust of the mind and heart, just the thoughts of lust broke the law. Just the thoughts of murder broke the law. Just the covetousness of the heart breaks the law. No physical adultery necessary to commit the sin. The sin is inside your spirit. And the outward signs cannot cleanse what's inside the cup.
Having the Name on the lips, the law in the hand, the mark in the flesh, or the object in the sanctuary has never been the same as having the Voice in the heart.
"Not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel" (Romans 9:6).
"A Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter" (Romans 2:29).
It couldn't be any plainer.
Jesus said the same thing to men who possessed every outward credential. The cup is cleaned from the inside, or it is not cleaned at all (Matthew 23:25–26). That is why the risen Christ does not say, "The one who has the right sign, the right lineage, the right ritual." He says, "The one who has an ear." The ear is the circumcised heart. External religion can reproduce the sound, but only the Spirit produces the hearing.
The overcomer in 2:7 is not the one who performed the law well enough. It is the one in whom the law has been written, who hears the Speaker, and who holds to Him when first love grows cold and when slander comes from those who claim the Name without the heart. The tree of life is given to that one because the life has already begun inside.
When they ask about your hope, the answer can stay simple and searching at the same time.
"I hope to hear the I AM more perfectly; not the sound of religion, but the Voice of the Spirit in the heart."
Jesus Christ has put Heaven in my heart. In all the cracks and scars there. He filled them with Himself. He freed my heart from the shadows. He cleansed my soul with His Spirit that He sent to find His own, those who hear His voice. He did not wait for my heart to be made whole before He moved in. He filled the fractures with Himself. The shadows lost their claim because His Spirit was sent to find me. That is circumcision of the heart. That is the ear given. That is the life that has already begun inside, the first taste of the Tree of Life.
The overcomer is not the polished one. It is the one whose ruins have been occupied by the First and the Last.
But what about those who have no ear?
Jesus refers to them twice. Referring to churches trying to join with the worldly systems. Legislating righteousness, and religious liberty. Trying to legislate religious life in an attempt to manage the spiritual life. He's not speaking of ethnicity, but of spiritual identity.
He says to them:
To the church in Smyrna:
"I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan" (Revelation 2:9).
To the church in Philadelphia:
"I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie, behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and they will learn that I have loved you" (Revelation 3:9).
He is speaking of people who claim the covenant Name, the covenant identity, and the covenant privilege while they slander and oppose the Messiah and His churches. They have the label, but hey do not have the ear.
That is the same line Jesus drew in the flesh. In John 8 the men who insisted they were Abraham’s children could not hear His word.
He told them why:
"You are of your father the devil…He who is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God" (John 8:44, 47).
What this means is, no ear means the Voice is not recognized. The claim can be loud. The lineage can be ancient. The ritual can be exact. But if the Spirit of the I AM has not opened the heart, the Speaker is still missed. Even if the church sign uses His name in its title.
Jesus isn't saying a slur against a people. It is a verdict on a lie. The letters do not tell the churches to hunt those people. They tell the churches to hear, and to hold fast to the truth, not to fear their slander, but to overcome. The warning stands over the one who has only the name.
Those who hold to the doctrines of Balaam (the introduction of idolatry into the faith) casting a stumbling block. In church history we see this idolatry doing exactly this. The introduction of idols and the worship of the images.
Though they nuance the meaning, worship is worship when it deafens the ear to the hearing of the Spirit. It is worship in unprescribed ways. Idolatry works the same way. Balaam’s counsel was not only pagan feasts. It was the introduction of another loyalty that competes with the Voice. Images, relics, wafers, incense, the crucifix and gestures; whatever the nuance attached to them, become idolatry at the point they deafen the ear to The Tree of Life.
Worship is not defined by the worshiper’s explanation of the object. It is defined by where the heart goes and whether the Spirit is still heard.
If the object, the system, or the alliance with power becomes the place people look instead of the living I AM who speaks by His Spirit, the ear closes. That is how first love dies. That is how slander against the hearers begins. That is how a gathering that bears His Name can still be called a synagogue of Satan.
The overcomer is still the one who will not trade the Voice for a managed religion. For those who cannot hear God has prepared the great tribulation.
Revelation 2:23
"And I will kill her children with plague, and all the churches (Protestant and Catholic) will know that I am He who searches the [inner man] minds and hearts; and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds." (Enhancement mine)
Reformed, Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, independent; none of them stand outside the searching of the One who walks among the lampstands. The warning is not aimed at one historic stream so the others can watch. It is aimed at every gathering that bears His Name while the ear closes, first love cools, Jezebel teaches, Balaam’s stumbling block is set down, or the system is trusted in place of the Voice.
"All the churches will know that I am He who searches minds and hearts."
The overcomer is still the same in every tradition. The one who hears the Spirit, will not trade the Voice for a managed religion.
End of story. The story the letters tell is one Speaker and two ways of standing before Him. The one who has an ear hears what the Spirit says. The one who has only the Name does not hear. The object, the system, and the claim are louder.
Amen.
P.S.
There's a reason you don't hear your priest or pastor teaching on these passages in Revelation. Because if they did they'd be tearing down their own systems. They'd be forced to draw a clear and straight line from the page to their doctrines. They'd have to either change or make excuses. And so they choose instead to ignore.
How could the congregation bear it? How could they sit in their places and genuflect, gesture, "venerate", and "tolerate", and not see the Word from the Revelation as a direct accusation against themselves?
A straight line from the page to the practices of the house will either produce repentance or produce a search committee. They'd drum their pastor out. They'd find someone for themselves who will say what they want to believe. And the spirits of Balaam and Jezebel will go on with business as usual. (2 Timothy 4:3–4)
I will say this, not every pastor or priest refuses the text. Some do draw the line and pay for it.
Pray for "all the churches". Pray they have ears to hear.
Pray first love is recovered before the tribulation that is promised to the unrepentant.
And pray the over-comers hold fast.
The one who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
Amen.
