Jesus said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6)
When our Lord spoke these words, he was literally saying that He is the opposite of illusion. And that His way leads to an eternal living reality.
When Jesus says He is the truth, He is setting Himself over and against every form of illusion, appearance, partial reality, and self-deception. He means to say that what He is saying and doing, and where he's going is unconcealed, unveiled. It's real. There is nothing unreal about any of it. The force of the claim is that Jesus is not merely truthful in what He says; He is the end of concealment itself. You're not going to make the case that He is being mysterious or positing some deeper esoteric meaning that only the initiated can access. He is saying he is the reality of everything that is right there in front of them; in the Person speaking.
In a religious world that often traded in veiled language, secret knowledge, and carefully managed appearances, Jesus presents Himself as the One in whom nothing is withheld.
His "way" is not a puzzle.
His "truth" is not a riddle.
And His life is not limited to private disciples.
So the disciples (and us) are left without the usual religious escape hatches.
We cannot say, "Perhaps He means something else." As the Devil hopes we'll say. We cannot retreat into mystery as a way of softening His divine claims.
He states it plain and simple:
He is the way.
He is the truth.
and He is the life.
No hidden layers.
Holding nothing back.
He lays it on the line:
"no one comes to the Father except through me."
In the beginning He was there, creating a universe of perfect openness and opportunity. "The life" he spoke of. "The way" He created was true and open handed. The life He later named in John 14:6 was already the life He had given. Nothing veiled, nothing withheld, not even the restrictions regarding the knowledge of good and evil was given in a deceptive manner. He told them plainly why they were not to eat from that tree.
The openness of that Divine/human relationship included clear boundaries spoken in the light. There was nothing requiring secret knowledge or religious covering to approach the Father in that creation.
Self-deception was not created by God. It entered and took root through the fall. Humanity then fell out of tune with that openness, and concealment entered. What had been straightforward became guarded, distorted, and full of illusion. The Evil One served up self-deception and humanity swallowed it.
This is why Jesus’ words in John 14:6 land with such force. He is not introducing a new kind of religion. Jesus is restoring the original openness that was lost.
And The Enemy of the truth still targets that original openness. He deceives humanity by tapping into the very image of God that was created into them. He doesn't create new capacities in us; he hijacks the ones God already placed there.
The propensity of self-deception took root in that original garden. It takes God's design out of context. The image of God includes the capacity to know, to desire, to reach for more, to reflect glory, and to live in open relationship. And everything The Enemy (sin) does is to distort every one of those capacities.
Full circle:
Jesus' claims are saying, the same image that was made for openness becomes the very point of attack, and He, the True Image, is the one who restores it.
The Enemy does not invent new desires or capacities; he twists the ones already given. And Jesus, the true Image of God, is the One who restores what was distorted. His claim in John 14:6 is not an abstract theological assertion. It is the personal, public recovery of the original design. His is the way back into openness with the Father, the truth that ends concealment, and the life that was always meant to be shared without veil or illusion.
