1 John 3:9-10
"No one who has been born of God practices sin, because His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin continually, because he has been born of God. By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother and sister."
The claim is not that a true child of God never sins, John has already ruled that out (1:8–10 and 2:1–2). It is that the one who has been born of God does not practice sin as a settled, ongoing way of life. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, that's which is born of the Spirit is Spirit.
The reason is given in the middle of the verse.
"His seed remains in him."
The new birth implants something living and permanent. The one who loves God loves the One sent from God. And in loving the Word of God there becomes a new nature and the old practices cannot permanently coexist without conflict in this new birth. The old practices no longer sit comfortably. They are resisted from within. The more the Word is received and loved, the more the new nature asserts itself, and the more the old practices are exposed as foreign and hostile.
This is why John can speak in terms of such an impossibility.
"he cannot sin continually."
The Word is itself the seed (1 Peter 1:23; James 1:18). The one who has been born of God comes to love the Word that gave him new life. And this rebirth brings assurance, hope, and peace. And as the Word is continually received and cherished, the new nature is nourished and strengthened.
John also offers an illustration for contrast. Where there is no conflict, no resistance from within, no growing love for the Word and for the Son, the question must be asked whether the seed was ever truly planted. John immediately tests the outward signs. By the reckoning of love the children of God and the children of the devil become obvious by what they practice.
Righteousness and love for the children of God are the visible family traits of those who are born of God.
He who does the will of God abides forever. And the child of God is not left in perpetual uncertainty; the Spirit is given as the abiding witness to this new state of being. And John gathers this whole assertion into a twofold commandment.
1 John 3:23-24
"This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us. The one who keeps His commandments remains in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He remains in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us."
Believe in the name of God’s Son and love one another.
We know that the children of God are known by their love. But how important is that name?
The name is preeminent. Absolutely necessary for rebirth. Yes the children of God are indeed known by their love; but that love flows from, and is authenticated by, a specific faith in a specific Person. In John’s writings the "name" is never a mere label. It carries the full weight of who Jesus is and what He has done.
To believe is more than knowing. To believe in the name of the Son of God is to receive Him as the eternal Son who became flesh, the propitiation for our sins, the One in whom the love of the Father has been made known and perfected.
He is true God. He is our Savior. The name matters because the Person matters. And so when we say we trust in His name, we are refusing to accept anything less. No substitutes. No second best cuts it. Anything less is not the faith that accompanies the seed of God. The new birth does not produce a vague spiritual affection that later attaches itself to Jesus; it produces faith in the Son as He actually is. And love for the brothers flows from that faith and is authenticated by it. Without the specific Person, the love John describes cannot stand. The name matters because the Person matters, and the Person is not interchangeable. He is the Word, the seed.
The Seed.
1 Peter 1:23 uses a closely related word:
"you have been born again, not of perishable seed (in Greek, spora) but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God."
This is the same terminology we see in John's work. Here the seed is explicitly identified with the Word of God. "His seed" (sperma autou). The implanted Word. The seed that remains. The seed that produces the fruit of the Spirit.
This Word is the rebirth. James 1:18 also links the new birth to the Word.
"Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth…"
And Paul (in Galatians 3:16-19) goes beyond biology and directly into the promise of God. He goes beyond religion and the law and brings everything right back to where it belongs, to God's Word. The promised One.
The Word is both the instrument and the content of the new life. Everything the law could not do, the promised Seed has done. The true seed is not merely a principle; it is ultimately the living Word Himself.
He is the Word that gave life, and the Word that continues to shape life. And the life it shapes is marked by faith in the name of the Son and love for those who belong to Him.
So what's in His name?
Jesus, (Iēsous, in Greek), is a transliteration of the Hebrew/Aramaic name Yeshua. A shortened form of Yehoshua.
Yehoshua is built from two elements:
Yeho - a form of the divine name Yahweh
shua - a verb, "to save, deliver, rescue"
So the name means "Yahweh is salvation" or "Yahweh saves." And the heard angelic being makes application of that meaning.
"She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." (Matthew 1:21)
Jesus is the living Word, the Seed. The seed that remains. And everything the law could not accomplish, this Seed has done.
He is everything.
Jesus is all and all.
Not one resource among many.
He is not a principle to be applied.
He is not a starting point from which we move on to something else.
He is the beginning and the end of the new birth.
The Word that was with God and was God became flesh, bore the name that means "Yahweh saves," and accomplished the salvation the name announced.
Why would you want anything else?
You want to be born again?
You want Jesus.
Not a religious upgrade or a spiritual technique. You want The Word, the promised Seed. In every way possible.
You want Jesus.
