Mark 3:11
And whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.”
You cannot remain neutral when it comes to Jesus Christ.
The leaders at the synagogues were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus. Couldn't they just ignore him and let his ministry fade into obscurity along with all the others that have come and gone?
No, they couldn't.
God was working on something, and they knew it. The crowds knew it. And even the demons knew it. A huge surge of popularity was expected and something had to be done about him.
Even the demons were getting in on what God was working out. And they made sure that everyone knew what was going on. Jesus told them to be silent, but somehow, we all know what they knew.
The work of God was in full swing. The prophecies about the Messiah were being fulfilled at a rate of about one every 30 seconds.
I read about a mathematician named Peter Stoner who published on the probabilities of just one person fulfilling even a small number of the biblical prophecies concerning the Messiah...it was mind boggling. The chances for any man to fulfill just 48 of the Messianic prophecies found in the Old Testament would be about 1 in 10^157—that's a 1 followed by 157 zeros.
Jesus didn't just fulfill 48 Messianic prophecies; He fulfilled more than 324 of the individual prophecies that the Prophets wrote concerning the Messiah.
Now do the math on that figure.
Go ahead...I'll wait.
Jesus was and is more than a matter of random interest.
From Genesis to Malachi there has been multitudes of prophecies about his work. Sometimes hidden and sometimes poetic and allegorical.
Genesis 3:15
"And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head,
and you will strike his heel."
Malachi 3:1
“Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts."
Don't believe me?
Look it up:
Messiah will be preceded by a Messenger...Isaiah 40:3; Malachi 3:1; fulfilled in Matthew 3:1-3; 11:10; John 1:23; Luke 1:17
The Messiah is to be born in Bethlehem...Micah 5:2; fulfilled in Matthew 2:1-7; John 7:42; Luke 2:4-7
The Messiah will enter Jerusalem on a donkey, will be betrayed by a friend, will be sold for 30 pieces of silver, and that money for which the Messiah is sold out will be thrown “to the potter” in God’s house. The Messiah will be born of a virgin, hated without cause, silent before His accusers, executed by crucifixion as a thief, given vinegar to quench His thirst, and executed without having any bones broken. He'll be buried among the rich when dead and raised from the dead after three days.
Look it up when you've decided you have the time to find out for yourself:
Micah 5:2; fulfilled in Matt. 2:1-7; John 7:42; Luke 2:4-7; Isaiah 40:3; Malachi 3:1; fulfilled in Matthew 3:1-3; 11:10; John 1:23; Luke 1:17; Zechariah 9:9; fulfilled in Luke 35-37; Matthew 21:6-11; Psalms 41:9; 55:12-14; fulfilled in Matthew 10:4; 26:49-50; John 13:21; Zechariah 11:12; fulfilled in Matthew 26:15; 27:3; Zechariah 11:13; fulfilled in Matthew 27:5-7; Isaiah 7:14; fulfilled in Matthew 1:18-2:1; Luke 1:26-35; Isaiah 49:7; Psalm 69:5; fulfilled in John 15:24-25; Isaiah 53:7; fulfilled in Matthew 27:12; Psalm 22:16; fulfilled in John 19:28; Psalm 69:22; fulfilled in Matthew 27:34; Exodus 12:46; Psalm 34:21; fulfilled in John 19:33-36; Isaiah 53:9; fulfilled in Matthew 27:57-60; Isaiah 53:9-10; Psalm 2:7; 16:10; fulfilled in Matthew 28:1-20; Acts 2:23-36;13;33-37; 1 Corinthians 11:4-6; Psalm 22:16; Zechariah 12:10; Isaiah 53:5, 12; fulfilled in Luke 23:33; John 20:25; Matthew 27:38; Mark 5:27, 28
These prophetic writings that have spanned millennia were either given by inspiration from God or the writers wrote them as they thought or wanted them to be. For the latter to have occurred, the scripture writers had just one chance in 10^17 of having them all come true in any one man, but they all came true in the gospel witness about Jesus Christ. This means that the fulfillment of these prophecies proves that God inspired the writing.
In his book, Science Speaks, mathematician Peter Stoner says...
“. . . We find that the chance that any man might have lived to the present time and fulfilled all (just) eight prophecies is 1 in 10^17.”
That would be...
1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000. That's one hundred quintillion.
Stoner illustrated it like this:
"...we take 10^17 silver dollars and lay them on the face of Texas. They will cover the state two feet deep. Now mark one of these silver dollars and stir the whole mass thoroughly. Blindfold a man and tell him that he must pick up one silver dollar and say that this is the right one. What chance would he have of getting the right one? Just the same chance that the prophets would have had of writing just eight prophecies and having them all come true in any one man, from their day to the present time, providing they wrote in their own wisdom." *Stoner, Peter W. Friends,
In case this is all too overwhelming or maybe you hate math, Jesus told us about these things through our brothers in Christ on the road to Emmaus...
Luke 22:44-47
Then he said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”
Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed rin his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem."
In studying the Messianic prophecies you'll find Jesus...it's inevitable, you can't escape him. You can't avoid or ignore Him. The authority and unbelievably tremendous odds of the text being fulfilled in the ways they were speaks undeniably for his Messiahship. Study the prophecies yourself and ponder the mathematical probabilities. And then pray, because the truth is going to set you free, but that freedom is costly. You'll no longer have any excuse. He will answer you when you pray for his wisdom and discernment, and he'll lead you into all truth.
The synagogue leaders knew he was the Messiah. The crowds knew he was the Messiah. The disciples and the demons knew he was the Messiah. His family were confused on this one, even his mother didn't react like someone who fully understood.
Some declared to themselves and to others that...
“He is out of his mind.” (Mark 3:21 *that was his family)
“He is possessed by Beelzebul! By the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.” (Mark 3:22)
“He has an impure spirit.” (Mark 3:30)
Jesus said about them:
Mark 3:28
"Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will NEVER be forgiven; they are guilty of an ETERNAL sin." (emphasis mine)
There's no purgatory for getting it right over time. It's done when you're done. There are no prayers from the saints that will cure you after death. Jesus never allowed for such a backdoor into heaven. This sin is unpardonable. No man can absolve it. No dead saint can absolve it.
The unpardonable sin is the sin of rejecting Jesus as the Christ. He that believes is not condemned, Jesus said...
John 3:18
"Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe STANDS CONDEMNED ALREADY because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son." (emphasis mine)
God has provided in prophecy and in practice ONLY ONE WAY! His Messiah fulfilled the offices of Prophet, Preist and King. He is the incarnation of The Word of God. And he alone is our intercession.
No other way has been predicted, given, or substituted. And Jesus himself said...
John 10:1
“I tell you the truth, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must surely be a thief and a robber!
Jesus is that gate; no other way gets you in. And he doesn't need help from the living, or those who have died in Him. In order to find another way, you've first got to explain away and rationalize against all these plain facts and evidence. When you do this, regardless the evidence, it is then obvious that you've set your heart and hardened it against the truth. You've set your course and have rejected the works of God. Your eternal salvation is lost because you've failed to accept the Messiah. Those who try to produce a universal salvation are obviously confused or refuse to believe these words and works of Jesus'
Jesus' miraculous works have revealed his origin in God. He alone did that. He fulfilled the promises of God by obeying his Father. And he asks the same from all of us who want eternal life in Him. Every person who wants to be bonded together into the family of God, must have spiritual rebirth through Him by going directly and boldly to His throne of Grace. Not by any other means. Not by intercession by others, or by adoption into another's faith walk. Not by virtue of being born into a certain cultural background. Not by works. Not by any deeds good or great. But by faith alone every man woman and child must accept Jesus Christ as God's Messiah. I didn't say that he did.
John 3:5
"Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit."
This is the spiritual baptism of rebirth that comes immediately upon believing in Him and obeying his commands. What follows is the best yet to come. Rebirth opens that door. New-life, restoration, sanctification, and resurrection in the kingdom of God.
Open the door to your heart friends. Let him enter your heart and bring his Spirit to witness for him.
Believe and obey, for even the demons believe.
They refused to submit but instead fled from him.
Do not follow their path.
