I Will Bless Those Who Bless You
Obadiah 1:13
"...Yes, you—do not gloat over their misery in the day of their disaster..."
Israel is all over the news these days, but honestly they've always been in the news. From the beginning of time. And throughout human history the fortunes and fates of Israel has been volatile. Every conquering nation throughout history has meet with their God and his judgments. Sometimes the conquest was an instrument of his wrath, and other times Israel has been a judgement against the mighty nations of the world. God positioned Israel strategically so that their impact, good or bad, upon the world would be guaranteed.
And then there's Edom.
God has a special kind of anger for them. Ever since Esau sold his inheritance for a bowl of stew, God has wanted to erase them from his memory. And probably the Edomites would have preferred that God would just put them out of his mind.
The descendants of Esau, Jacob's twin brother, are prophesied against here by the prophet Obadiah as they perennially terrorize the nation of Israel. These descendants are known as the Edomites. Their territory was modern day Jordan, south of Israel. And throughout the times when Israel was under judgments, when they were at war and being invaded by their neighbors, the Edomites would harass them, mock them, cut off their supplies and escape passages. They've always taken advantage of these invaders. They'd join with Israel's enemies and take advantage where ever they could. If the Israeli people were somehow able to escape the destructions of war, the Edomites would capture them and hand them over to their enemies. This was their sin, they rejoiced in the judgment of Israel. They profited from it. They cheered on the chastisement from God. And they what they could to encourage the war of judgment against them. Not because they loved God or were righteous, but because they found joy in the misery being inflicted upon the nation of Israel.
And so the Lord God in heaven determined to destroy everything that is Edom...their land, their people, their culture, their entire existence.
(vs 2) The Lord says to Edom,
“I will cut you down to size among the nations; you will be greatly despised."
God decides to use their own power and pride against them. God makes plans for every nook and cranny of Edom to be looted. Every treasure they ever stole from Israel will be found and taken from them. They'll become a laughing stock among the nations. And interestingly enough one side effect (or first cause maybe?) of this judgment from God, is that the nation of Edom will experience a brain drain.
Obadiah 1:8
"...on the mountains of Edom I will destroy everyone who has understanding."
Because of their violence against their Jewish cousins they will be put to shame and destroyed forever. Because they refused to help them. And because they looked to assault and loot the Israeli people as they were fleeing for their lives. The Edomite nation will be lost into history, never to stand among the nations again.
Application:
So what should we take away from this?
Right away we must take note that God is intimately connected to the fortunes of the people of Israel. And he's always going to take it personally when the nations of the world scheme against them. You attempt to swallow up what you can from them? God's going to make you swallow every word you ever spoke against them. God will make you stagger and fall because of your own schemes, and ultimately you and everything you are will disappear from history.
And On A Positive Note:
And never forget that God follows up every judgment with blessings for Israel and those who bless Israel.
Obadiah 1:17-21
"And the people of Israel will come back to reclaim their inheritance...And the Lord himself will be king!”
Jeremiah 30:8-9
“‘In that day,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘I will break the yoke off their necks and will tear off their bonds; no longer will foreigners enslave them. Instead, they will serve the Lord their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them."
Fulfilling the prophecy from the beginning...
Genesis 12:3
"I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Today many people want to chastise Israel for what seems to them to be a relentless and horrific bombing of Palestinian Territories. They claim Israel is committing genocide against the Palestine people. And they may be right, at least in part.
Certainly the American MIC is involved in arms sales to Israel. And throughout Palestine innocent people are dying because of the fall out from those arms. So by virtue of those munitions sales, the people of America are at least indirectly involved in that death and destruction. Meanwhile, Iran is arming Hamas encouraging more death and destruction. In the same way the descendants of Esau worked to undermine Israel and rob them for whatever they can get.
Sigh.
And so nothing is new under the sun. Edom no longer exists, but Israel remains a stumbling block for all the nations of the world. So we're given a choice by God, support Israel and be blessed, or harass them and be judged accordingly.
I choose to bless Israel. And I'm not going to equivocate on that. I hate the killing. I hate the innocent people being crushed under the weight of war. I hate that Hamas still holds Smerican hostages and our feckless President does NOTHING. And I hate that Israeli and Palestine children are being raised in this environment. I hate it all. And I'm praying for everyone in it.
I'm gonna keep on praying and continue to support Israel. And let God do what God needs to do. 🇮🇱
