“Son of man, listen carefully to all my words that I speak to you and take them to heart."
Ezekiel 3:10
We all who love the Lord God in heaven, and who listen to his words, are watchman sent out to deliver his message. Don't be intimidated, though the people are rebellious, walk among them, make them your own. Speak your piece, whether they listen or not.
Whatever you hear, speak to them.
Whatever you can do...do it.
"She has done what she could"
Mark 14:8a
She did what she could when she could in the way she was able. She gave all she had in glory and tribute to The Lord. And though the others tried to stop her, she had taken his words to heart. He had just shared with them about his coming trials, and about the tribulations they'd all face. And he was about to share the new covenant meal with them. And these hardhearted hardheaded men were furious about her offering. Instead they focused on the pouring out of her love for Jesus. All around them and even among them, the world was conspiring against him. The future was not bright for the people of God. The people who love God are coming under seige by the enemies of God. A spiritual war was coming. And Jesus wants his children to be alert.
“Watch! Be alert! For you don’t know when the time is coming."
Mark 13:33
It's a time of conspiracy and devotion. And in this tense moment the woman offers Jesus her gift in full. She broke the alabaster container, and poured out all she had, she held nothing back. She took his message to heart. Others would not have even thought to give such an offering, in fact many of his friends were upset about what she had done for Jesus.
Jesus saw this devotion as a great act of love and faith. She covers his head with spikenard, intensely aromatic, amber-colored essential oil that has a thick consistency. His hair would have smelled sweet and the perfume would have carried far. So much so that everyone around him would no doubt have been overwhelmed by how intense the scent was. This was how he went out into his coming trial, persecutions, and death.
So it goes with all who go out into the world speaking the words of life from Jesus Christ. The words are to all who hear, both sweet and overwhelming. Some will receive it with joy and many others will be offended by its intensity.
She went among them and she made her offering. And Christ prophesied that forevermore her faith story would become a gospel story that all future Christians would learn from. And so it does. She's anonymous. We don't know her name, or her station, only her faith.
This is the reward for all who live the faith. Not as the world gives, not the kinds of things Satan offered Jesus. No...for those who take Christ's words to heart, faith that leads to everlasting life is your reward.
Amen
