Jesus asked his followers, "Who do you say that I am?"
The Holy Spirit speaking through the heart and mind of Simon Peter, caused him to answer, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus basically said, good, you've got the basics down. And because you understand this foundational truth I can use that to gather to myself all the souls that my Father in heaven has given to me.
Matthew 16:18 Jesus said...
"And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it."
Have you ever noticed that some people seem to grow spiritually differently than others? I've noticed that it has a lot to do with how they receive and grow in the word of God. It's kind of like the parable of the sower. There are tryer's and there are doers. The soil they are made up of is cultivated or it's rocky, it's called or it's a bramble. If you want to grow you're going to study and meditate on the word of God. You're going to love it. And you're going to do it. It's going to consume you.
It's kind of like if you're hungry, you’re probably healthy. It's a sign that your body is alive and well. If you've ever known someone who is failing to thrive, you'll understand what it means to not be well. Your body is against you. You loose your hunger and the strength to even care to try. Lethargic and weak you simply sleep through your life. In this way many are spiritually failing to thrive.
My dad passed away many years ago now. He was diagnosed with, "failure to thrive". His bone marrow was sick and unable to maintain his blood in a stable condition. It was kind of like he was bleeding to death. His body was not thriving, his body was not functioning properly. And so he slowly died because his blood had lost its value.
In the same way many loose their connection to the bloodline of Jesus Christ when they aren't living in His word. It's what makes us thrive. When we aren't in His word, we're failing to thrive. Slowly we will become lethargic in our faith, and ultimately we'll fall asleep in our thoughts and prayers. The word keeps us alive. It's the blood of our faith. It's our lifeline.
In my dad's last days he was having to have blood transfusions every day. But it was an artificial thing, it didn't cure him, it couldn't sustain him. The bone marrow was not alive and thriving. It's the same with our spiritual life in God's word. We need that spinal tap to continue to receive the living water. We're all dying and we all need to receive that blood transfusion that is Gods word.
Listen to what Jesus said about this:
John 14:23 Jesus answered, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 The one who doesn’t love me will not keep my words. The word that you hear is not mine but is from the Father who sent me."
It the Christian life is just about getting into heaven, then why is the Spirit interested in changing our desires? He is remaking us. He is inspiring us and turning our hearts towards Christ. Why? Why not just save us a send us off into heaven? Because he is giving us a new heart. He's changing us here and now.
How?
Maybe next time we'll get into that. For now read your Bible
Amen and amen
God bless you all now and forever.
