During our last prison ministry event we were discussing with the residents this question. Typically you'd expect something akin to a fear of violence, or fear of trusting someone. Maybe fearing someone or something trying to destroy your safety.
My group discussed fear of the current economic situation. That's what they wanted to talk about. Buying gold was their recommendations. They talked about the market trends and inflation. They wanted to talk about investment opportunities. These men weren't fearful of a gang attack or getting inadvertently involved in a hostile fight going on around them. They were afraid that the dollar was in decline. 🤷🏻♂️
What do you all fear most?
As for me, I fear a lot of things. Generally unknown things. Uncertainty creates anxiety for me. That's probably normal. Uncertainty in the economy right now does concern me as well. But ultimately what I fear is the American culture and the pagan environment that is growing herein. And I fear that this is happening because the people of God, the followers of Christ, are not just slacking in their evangelical efforts (they are), but they are welcoming into the gospel message a myriad of endorsements for all sorts of spiritual practices that are not in Christ.
It's not a new thing this multiverse of religious belief. In fact it's always been this way since the very beginning. And has developed in every culture. It only takes 1 or 2 generations for a people to turn away from God and find themselves wrapped up in pagan mythology. This trend typically begins when people start following after the things that help them to mitigate their fears. Fear drives these cultural trends. Fear drives fear which causes people to seek refuge. And people develop sanctuaries out of all sorts of natural phenomena and resources. Even one's diet can become a religion. In this age ones sexuality and gender imagination has become a god. And in time, as groups of people agree on some spiritual bias they develop a religious order to support it's cause. Because people need order. Because people fear spiritual disorder.
And so, this has been the norm among humans, this hasn't changed no matter how educated a culture becomes.
Why am I sharing this today? Because the Christian people are no different than their pagan counterparts. They flounder and flirt with "ideas" and often because they want to be inclusive. And that's great in one way. It's great that Christians want to make sure their neighbors are saved. It's a problem when Jesus is set aside to make room for others.
A great example for effective and welcoming evangelism is found in the book of acts. Note that Jesus didn't become something he's not to fit in. Jesus fits into every culture by nature. Because Jesus created this world and all its people.
Read the following.
Acts 17:16-34
English Standard Version
The Apostle Paul in Athens
16 Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw that the city was full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there. 18 Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him. And some said, “What does this babbler wish to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities”—because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection. 19 And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? 20 For you bring some strange things to our ears. We wish to know therefore what these things mean.” 21 Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new.
Paul Addresses the Areopagus
22 So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. 23 For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘To the unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. 24 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. 26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, 28 for
“‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said,
“‘For we are indeed his offspring.’
29 Being then God's offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man. 30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”
32 Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked. But others said, “We will hear you again about this.” 33 So Paul went out from their midst. 34 But some men joined him and believed, among whom also were Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them. [The End]
Paul focused on:
1. The God who made the world and everything in it.
2. In him (Christ) we live and move and have our being.
3. Now he commands all people everywhere to repent.
4. God has given assurance to all by raising Christ from the dead.
Folks, when was the last time your preacher sermonized about the divine nature of Christ and the significance of his resurrection?
Did your pastor preach on it today?
Or was it about some other god (idol)?
Folks, God has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man Jesus whom he has appointed for this second coming. This is the gospel in every age for every person no matter their situation or what they fear. This is the message that won over the ancient world and has lasted throughout every generation since Christ had ascended into heaven. And he's coming back.
Read Matthew chapter 24 and then this prophecy
Zechariah 14:3-4
3 Then the Lord will go out to fight against those nations, as he has fought in times past. 4 On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem. And the Mount of Olives will split apart, making a wide valley running from east to west. Half the mountain will move toward the north and half toward the south.
We have excellent reasons to anticipate the return of Christ. That should be our sermon. That should be our welcoming to our neighbors. That should be our gospel message, because that is the good news.
All other messengers will fail spectacularly. When he returns Christ will not be looking for people being culturally sensitive and coexisting with every other god. He will be looking for faith. And where he doesn't find it he moves on.
Folks, Jesus was concerned about the people who were not in him, and this was his fear -
"I tell you, he will grant justice to them quickly! But when the Son of Man returns, how many will he find on the earth who have faith?"
Luke 18:8
That was his fear...lack of faith.
God bless you church.
